To go over a 3 year review might take some time. I'm surprised they only allotted 30 minutes for that plus an IEP. It will obviously take more time just to go over the evaluations. You can either ask them to reschedule at a time that they can go longer or like your dh said, when the 30 minutes are up, ask to reschedule to finish. You are right, the deadline is not your problem so I would not sign anything under pressure to meet their deadline.

Hopefully, they sent you a copy of the eval's in advance so you can look it over before the meeting. That would save time. But if they didn't, yikes.

( ) 1/2 hour IEP meeting

I got an email today from the SpEd teacher saying that the meeting coming up on Thursday (which is to go over his three year re-eval AND develop the IEP), will last 1/2 hour!

I'm shocked. I have never come across this before. She said that the teachers will have to leave @ 3:15 (meeting is 2:45 after school) and that they cannot do it during the day.

Isn't there some IDEA law or guideline that tells what needs to be covered in the meeting(s)?

When I was a spec. ed. teacher, the district paid the teachers beyond their contract time out of the special ed budget. Apparently, they can't do that now. That was a different state, though, and under a different version of IDEA.

DH says that we'll just have to have more meetings until the IEP is complete. The spec. ed teacher asked for us to do the dual meeting (eval and IEP) so that they could make their deadline for when the IEP is due. That is the school's problem - not mine - that they didn't plan far enough in advance for the deadline.

Thanks.

You have the right to reschedule  and that is exactly what I would do.  I wouldn't want to feel rushed.  You are right it's not your problem but theirs!  They need to find a different time.  Good luck!

I agree with you feeling and rushed and with .

Maybe say that you'll be there....but that you want to tentatively schedule another one....in case it's not all covered. MAKE them give you a time. We've had IEP mtgs "START" at 730 in the morning and end at 815 when they have to get to their rooms and then "finish up" after school.

Just be cool about it and have them schedule another one "just in case".

Hugs to you.

Leah,

There is no legal criteria set for a minimal amount of meeting time. What is

provisioned is that the time should be (not must be) scheduled at a mutually

beneficical time. If that can not happen, the District will have to have

teleconferencing capabilities.

So, in a nut shell, yes, it will upset you or any other parent to have a short

meeting. But, no, they are not in violation of the law. So the only

alternative is to schedule enough meetings to accomplish your goal.

Thank you for your responses. My husband drafted a letter, which we emailed to

the team and mailed via USPS. The special ed. supervisor got back to us and

said she was working with the on-site (school) team to make it work for an hour.

She got back to us and told us that yes, they can meet for an hour today.

Hopefully, we can get it accomplished in an hour, but like most of you said, we

can schedule more meetings if need be. Very frustrating this was! Thanks for

your help.
