Guest guest
As someone who suffers from Irritable Bowel Syndrome, which can occasionally manifest in a backed up state when muscles spasm and things don't move through, I can relate to the problems with having that " heart burn " feeling more often and more intensely, as well as increased problems with pesky foam. It is like the pressure differential between below the stomach compared to above creates havoc. Guest guest
Kelli, I would wait for another day. I had the same problem then today everything " broke loose " so to say!! I'm glad that I was home!!! LOL Give it one more day before you do anything or you might be sorry. Guest guest
Yes, Kelli, you can take metamucil...but remember...liquids in, liquids out...if you haven't eaten any solids you may not have much to "doo-doo" anyway. It is very normal for me to only go about every 3-4 days even 4 mos out...because there isn't that much solid food going in to begin with...so go REALLLLY easy on the amount of metamucil you take. I found a product that comes in capsules called colon cleanse that works great for me...if I DO have any problems.BIG HUGS, AND GOD'S BLESSINGSDawnita MayLowpass, Oregon10/05/05 dob "Iraida" 209/172/135 5ft 3inches See Mylatest photos at: http://dawnita1961.myphotoalbum.com/
Guest guest
Both my boys have been somewhat constipated this week as well. Can't quite figure it out, as we've been GAPS/SCD (not stages) for 7 weeks. Why now? Besides pushing fluids, does anyone have any other suggestions? I happened to have some Dr. Schulze herbal intestinal remedy (which has fig concentrate in it, I hope it's not SCD illegal), I gave my older son some of that for a few days and it seemed to help somewhat. It seems weird that a diet full of broths would cause constipation, I would think the broths would promote regularity, if anything. Maybe the fact that we're eating more meat and eggs? But again, why now, after 6-7 weeks? Does anyone else have experience taking bentonite (montmorillonite) clay, or know anything about its effects on bowel movements? That is the only other new variable in our mix. [ ] GAPS intro diet causing constipation? I see that S. has been experiencing some constipation too...anybody else? Thanks .. Guest guest
, Bentonite clay is very, very constipating. That is probably why. You might cut back on your dose and then work up slowly. Guest guest
The manual that came with the clay says that it is constipating only initially, and then usually regulates things. Also, only one boy is taking clay but both have been constipated, and I have been taking clay but have not been constipated. So it seems like something else is going on...! Guest guest
Anne, Yes it can. It can do this by blocking the opioid receptors in the gut. This is the same mechanism by which taking opiate pain killers causes constipation. You can avoid this by eating plenty of fruits and veggies, eating dried fruits like raisins, apricots, prunes etc., and drinking plenty of water. Guest guest
Anne/Kenda, I take LDN for UC/Crohns and was aware it could cause constipation, which to me as you can imagine, was music to my ears! However, it’s really helped my UC/Crohns tremendously and I now take psyllium husks to help with bowel movements. No problems. Guest guest
I have Crohns, have been on LDN over three and a half months, and it has not caused me one iota of constipation. We are all very different. Having said that, I've never had any sort of chronic D with Crohns, either. I have leaned more toward constipation my entire life. Anyway, happy that others are having success!
Guest guest
, During the time if it was inflamed, I was taking steroids. To keep the disease at bay, I was on a daily cocktail of salazopyrin (sulfasalazine), colifoam and some liquid stuff which I had to insert into my rectum and roll the tube of liquid into my bowel and just lie there for 20 mins (sorry I can’t remember the name). With the cramps/pain I was taking tramadol and cocodomol. I was always told it was not diet related but I personally knew if I ate/drank something it would kick it off so just eliminated those foods from my diet. However, I’ve now changed my ‘menu’ to LDN along with vitamin supplements – Calcium/Vit D3/Vit K (in one tablet form chewable), Psyllium Husks, Zinc, Cod Liver Oil, MSM, and Osteo Plus which consists of Magnesium, Zinc, Copper, Boron and Vitamin D. I am going to start introducing ALA into my diet after reading other people’s experiences on this forum as it seems to work well with LDN. However, I do not eat fruit – that may sound odd but I found that it made me feel bloated and just unwell. The only fruit I do eat is tomatoes. However, I more than compensate for that with veg and salads. Guest guest
What would be some GAPS approved methods for relieving constipation? Hubby is reluctant to have 17yo son use an enema. He is afraid the son will not be willing to continue with the diet. Can we use a glycerin suppository? Just prior to going on the Intro on Monday, son was taking large doses of magnesium to keep him regular. We stopped all supplements cold turkey. That may have been a mistake. Just trying to follow GAPS intro to the letter. I assume we should wait until the constipation is improved before trying to progress on the introductory diet? We are still at stage 1. We have been doing it for 4 days without the Sauerkraut juice. It was only ready today. So, we are now adding it to soups and broth. I am hoping that the fermented juice will help the constipation. Thank you for answering my questions. Jan
Guest guest
Magnesium is fine. Definitely put him on it. I think that's better than the glycerin suppositories which can be uncomfortable. He can also soak in a bath of epsom salts (which is also magnesium) and that will help. You can't overdo magnesium; the body will flush it out and the only side effect is diarrhea which probably isn't a concern here. The fermented juice should help the constipation since the juice will be full of probiotic bacteria. It's tricky, though, because it will also contain lots of wild yeasts which can cause gut inflammation in someone who is sensitive to yeast. If he complains of a stomach ache after eating the juice then I would hold off on it. Inflammation will only make the constipation continue.I wouldn't rule out the enema. It really depends on how long it's been since he's had a bowel movement. If it's been several days then you might want to seriously consider it if the magnesium doesn't help.On Nov 12, 2010, at 9:13 AM, thelongsfarm wrote: What would be some GAPS approved methods for relieving constipation?
