we sign my son up for every fun therapy we can - hippotherapy, aquatherapy, gumnastics therapy etc- we have inhome staff as well but I think he learns more in the fun stuff than anything else - theyw ork on reciprocal conversationa nd "joing" teaching how to interact during all these and he just thinks he is having fun- he also goes to a aspergers day treatment program int he summer called Maplegrove, where it is like day camp but they work on cognitive behavioral and social skills all day long with all the kids, wile doing typical summer activities - it is amazing how he improves each summer, plus we have him in every activity he is eligibke fr special needs soccer, baseball, boy scouts, Sunday school - everything he does is an opportunity to work on social skills.

Hi Group,

I was just wondering … has anyone found truly unique ways to teach social skills (other than therapy at home)? I’ve heard of using a Wii for younger kids recognize/familiarize names with people. Just curious if there were other similarly creative ideas. Thanks!

Betty, there are entire books on teaching social skills with wonderful ideas for teaching and practicing various skills. You can google social skills over at amazon. We have used books by Winner - very great insight for the older kids. Also, "super skills" is a wonderful book that outlines the skills one needs (great list to use for IEP development) and then has activities to teach those skills and tells you what skills are highlighted with each activity. There are certainly more out there. I remember reading "Teaching your child the language of social success" as well in the beginning of my search and it broke down the skills one needs to be able to function socially. I am sure there are more now since that one.
