Guest guest
Hi everyone, Just want to let everyone know we were finally approved for an IEP. It took a lot of work (gathering lots of information), lots of sleepless nights and a 4 hour meeting, but it was worth it. I've heard the hard work starts once you get the IEP-getting the sevices and having everything documented. It was interesting to watch my son's teacher in the IEP meeting. She seemed to be pushing to get him into the Special ed. class for the entire day. Everything that came up, she kept saying he would do sooo much better in a quieter environment such as the special education learning center. Our advocate made it clear we wanted to keep him in the general ed. classroom as much as possible. We ended up agreeing on 45 minutes a day in the special ed learning center. I hope it's okay! They still need to do the behavioral assessment and autism assessment but they were able to put him under Other Health Impairment. I'm confused why that isn't enough and what the reason is for needing a secondary qualification?? Anyhow, I just wanted to update and say, "thank you" to everyone that sent good thoughts our way. Thank you! ( ) Re: IEP meeting coming up Good luck! Well he seems to need someone to keep him on task to finish work and to pay attention. Guest guest
Well, going into Spec. Ed. classes was not good for my son....I thought it would be...so I pushed for it in 6th grade...Big Mistake...!!! He is in inclusion now...and doing better. What my son needs is smaller classes but NOT special ed. He was bored in math and got in trouble. He was around kids that had behavior problems...and he ended up in trouble a lot too! I also found they teased him more...and it was a lousy year till March when they moved him into a math and english inclusion classroom setting. he did not want to go at first...but I made him...and he was fine. Guest guest
Yes, Kelli, I posted a while ago with the same concern. My son has a DX of autism and his classification was autism all through elementary school. but now in Middle school they changed his classification to OHI even though they spoke to his doctors. they said he will still get services under OHI so they are changing his classification to that. My question to them was - If it's all the same and if he'll still get the same services - why not leave his classification as autism. (((what's the difference))) they still won't put that answer to me in writing like I requested. that is true about children getting better service with the autism classification because they get the right services. a teacher that doesn't have training in autism can't teach our kids as well as someone trained in autism. what a difference that makes for our kids. that's the difference. a child with an autism classification will get better services from teachers trained in autism to teach your child. The reason why they want to change the classification from autism to OHI is the MONEY!!!!! they don't have to train their teachers and that's why they won't put it in writing. they save lots of money because we are the ones that are driving our kids to tutors, doctors, social skills groups, etc... and we are the ones paying for it as well as paying taxes for them in school and while the school is saving that money - they are buying new computers, desk, chairs, etc.. for their office and whatever else they need. If I were you I would try to get your child in that other school district since they have an awesome autism program. You will see such a hugh difference!!! good luck to you and IMHO it makes a hugh difference on their classification. Guest guest
What part of MASS do you live in? I live in Mass too and I am having great difficulty with the school my son goes to.....the behavorist assessed my son and said he doesn't have Apergers nor PDD just behavior problems. He wants to send my son to a "behavior specific school" He does not care that Tufts Medical Center that my son stayed at for a week for psych because he wanted to kill himself said my son had Aspergers, PDD , and sensory Intergration disorder.....My son's counselor & psychiatrist said he has PDD, & my son's developmental clinic said he had provisional Aspergers.......This behavorist stated that he " I confess to be frankly flummoxed by the previously reported ASD diagnoses. It is quite possible that my son was on the ASD spectrum early i his life but with the support of his parents and special education, his ASD deficits have been sufficiently remediated so he no longer qualifies for an ASD diagnosis.I was suppose to have a IEP meeting today but cancelled due to reading the report I received 2 hrs before the meeting and I contacted an advocate which I am meeting on Wednesday. My son just started having behavior problems back in November due to his birth father trying to come back into his life .....which needless to say lasted all of 4 months with 4 24hr visits......my son has always had something different about him and not behavior........I am so shocked at this report and honestly don't know what to do next. Guest guest
Hi Tina, I relate to your story. I have the same problem with my daughter. As you know several children has killed themselves in Mass because of being bullies. Because of her asperger, my daughter gets into idea of wishing to die, she even wrote that in the math book. Also children tease her all the time. After that incident I really got scare of having my daughter in school without a plan that might look for sign to help her out. I called DSS and filled neglect charges against the school because by not providing an IEP my daugther was dealing with so much stress that lead her to think of killing herself. I also told them that other children called her name, etc. The DSS went to the school to investigate...The school most hate me now... My daughter school is a great school. They have accomodate her all those years, but now that she is going to another school it could trigger her thoughts of killing herself again... Then I called children advocacy project and the dept of education and other agencies that advocate for children. When I come home today I will send you information of how to make a complaint regarding this issue I also will give you phone numbers. Government agencies are taking seriously the problem of children committing suicide. I called them and told them that I believe that most mothers who children have killed themselves have asked her help and nobody ever listened to them. I told them I need the IEP to protect my daughter from herself at school and the school is neglecting her needs. My daugther academic is ok, and that is the reason they did not want to give me an IEP. But because her aspergers could endanger her well being at school I demanded at least a 504 plan. I talked with my advocate yesterday. She told me that the school is going to cooperate and have her in a plan. I also talked to all her doctors and asked them to give me a letter of support. I explained them my concerns and they wrote a letter to school. If I were you I would get rid of the counselor and the psychiatrist and find somebody that will back you up and back up the finding of Tuffs Medical School. Definite I will accuse the school of neglecting his needs and endangering his well being by not providing him with a safe environment and providing an IEP. Go to the town meeting and tell them the problem. I took advantage of a meeting that took place at school regarding bulling at school where I expressed my concerns about the school not providing support for those children that are at risk of killing themselves, children that has aspergers and other issues and I gave the example of my daughter. I got an standing ovation and clapping from the crow and I felt I was not alone..... Is you son on medication? medication helps my daughter a lot. I do not allow my girl to have visitations with her father because she really gets upset. So I asked for her mental records, asked for a support letter for her psychiatrist and therapist and went to court. The cout ruled on my daugther favor and stop visitation. If those visitations are very disturbing to him, you can go to court yourself and ask for a modification. Get his medical records and a support letter from the therapist. The court will appoint a lawyer for your son and you can exchange information with him. If you need help with the paper work, there are lawyers that for a small fee give you the templates needed in court and advise. I only payed $150 dollars for this services. I agree with you, by disagreeing with the sentence "the his ASD deficits have been sufficiently remediated so he no longer qualifies for an ASD diagnosis". without the support regression happens very often. This happend to my aspie girl. I took her out of the IEP because I thought she was "cure", because they told me that her problems were remediated. THEY WERE WRONG...WRONG...WRONG... My girl started to have regression a year after she was taking out of services and I payed a high price to start over from scratch without any support. Do not allow the school to take your son out of the IEP, because without the support problems will come back again. Challenge the report, get a second opinion. SHAKE THE SCHOOL AND THE SYSTEM. KEEP ADVOCATING FOR YOU SON. ALL THIS GROUP IS WITH YOU. YOU ARE NOT ALONE. ( ) Re: IEP meeting coming up Regarding classifications. ..this is interesting to me. Guest guest
our dev ped warned us that higher functioning children tend to, not only take longer to dx b/c they squeek by or fake it for so long but they also do not usually qualify as asd through ddsn or the school district. in our district they require classroom observation and the autism rating scales. the biggest obstacle is the observations as not only are they arbitrary b/c of all the " opinion " involved but they can be effected so much by how well a child is doing the day of their observation. btw we are not in mass, we are in sc On Mon, Mar 15, 2010 at 10:20 PM, Tina Ledvina <tlledvina@...> wrote:  What part of MASS do you live in? Guest guest
I would want to know who this behaviorist is and what his/her qualifications are. Plus, who is he/she working for (did the school bring this person in?) I would bring in someone of my own to do an FBA. You can also go over the FBA that this person did and figure out what is going on. He/she should have observed in a variety of settings and written what was going on before, during and after each incident. You can see yourself then if the incident can be related to having AS or not. But overall, I would bring in someone independent (ask for an Independent educational evaluation to be done) and bring in someone neutral and who is trained in autism to assess what is going on. That is the only way to counter the report - bringing in more data showing otherwise. Roxanna Whenever I feel blue, I start breathing again. Guest guest
I called disability rights and explained that we were being denied a free and appropriate public education for my son with a disabiity and we got a parent advocate free- she was nice and had repore with the staff - but I think truthfully in the end it was us going to the superintendent with all the documentation that made the biggest difference, because he knew we had a case if we went due process and I was clear that if my son did not get help I would make a dpi complaint - we also had an advocate from a parent organizaion called facets but that didn't help much either - going to the superintendent with lots of documentation made the biggest difference. He could not make a change to the IEP team decision but he did send the director of special ed to get involved and she actually spoke on behalf of my son at the meetings and inquired about compromises. It was strong arming but I think there is definitely a political game that goes on behind the scenes where they always say no at the beginning and then when they know the parent will take it to the next level they give a little and here anyways you just have to keep pushing for what your child needs and keep documenting to prove it - sometimes you try it their way and wait for it to blow up in their faces, then you go back and say that didn't work can we please try it my way now - eventually you get something, maybe not everything you think you are entitled to for your child but it is better than nothing - if you have money it seems you can hire people the school district is afraid of and will do more for, but since I do not in my case, they know how far I can take it on my own - you only need to pay for a test if it is a medical diagnosis you need- for school you can request an independent Education Diagnosis because you repute their evaluation and they HAVE to pay for it- just put in writing and send via certified mail - mae sure you are very clear in all the ways you feel they are wrong, how it intereferes with free and appropriate public education, etc wrightslaw.com has lots of info on how to do this From: <gilesfamily1205@...>Subject: ( ) Re: IEP meeting coming up Date: Sunday, October 17, 2010, 2:25 PM how did you hire an advocate? the school is having us in for an ard meating in >2 wks they lied to us last yr (our son is 6 and was Dx over the summer) about special ed said he had adhd and he needed to be medicated and "something is wrong with him hes just not right"and things got so bad i pulled him kindergarden this year we met b/f the year and had a talk with admin b/c i couldent trans b/c of his record they said he did not qualify of 504 or spec ed and that the pediatricians Dx was not enough i went home prepared to call a lawyer then they called back and said they will test him but we have to pay for a psych test to proove he has A we have the meeting on the 25th and i cant wait to see the stops they will pull i think we need someone on our side 6 to 2 me and hubbby is just not going to work b/c they have no regard for the law. >> Hello:> > I've been reading all the posts on here and I'm so grateful we found this group! > > Our IEP meeting is coming up on Tuesday and we are so nervous. We've already been told he doesn't qualify for special services at the first IEP (Nov.2009). We didn't sign the IEP and the school never contacted us about it. We had to contact them in February to ask if they planned on meeting with us, again, to finalize the report. At this time, we decided to hire an advocate and go back in there on Tuesday to try and convince them he does need the IEP. They continue to tell us he doesn't qualify because he's meeting the benchmarks BUT we're talked to on a daily basis, by the 1st grade teacher, about him not finishing his work, not paying attention, blah, blah, blah.> So...I just wanted to send an email and ask everyone to send some good thoughts our way on Tuesday.> > Thank you ALL so much for your posts.
