It's a computer class... can you use spellcheck ? What is the 'purpose' of the

class, what evaluative purpose does it serve regarding your acceptance into grad

school ?

Dear fnofsports:

Keep on keeping on. I do not know why I do, but I do. I have many issues. If I could figure out why I do I would be a Genious. I bet you will get in to grad school.

T.

( ) What would you recommand I do?

I have to take this comp class as a prerequisate to grad school and I am sortof wondering how I will get out of it with better then a C. The issue isn't so much I can't write, but the issue is I can't write on my own. I have sooooooooooooooooo many issues when it comes to grammar and spelling its not even funny and I always need someone to help me proofread it. So I look at my syllabus and I can't have family friends whoever proofread it (though I can submit it to a company at 20 bucks a pop, which while I could afford it I certainly don't want to if for no other reason then for my principles). So I have no clue what I am going to do in regards to this class... I am sooooooo tempted to drop it right now because I know I will have a really hard time passing it (nothing but pedistrian language and writing operations can be used). There were a couple other classes I took in college already that they might count as a comp class... I donno.

I would make sure you really need the class. I would take the

class when you have the time to work with someone in the

tutoring center at the college. I hope your school has one.

I volunteered at college in the tutoring center and students

drop in and I would help with an outline or review work.

I would pay for a tutor to help me overcome an area of weakness.

I would rather work with a tutor than send my work into a

online company. A tutor can give me support and help keep

me motivated in an area of weakness.

good luck! Don't give up.

Aren't there more sophisticated proofreading software nowadays? You know,

better than spell check? Might be worth the investment if you can find one.

Might offer you more independence in this and similar classes. Also, is there

something wrong with getting a C? If all your other grades are fairly high, one

C probably won't kill your GPA or anything. Now I totally get it, as I was once

a complete perfectionist, motherhood has cured me of that. If you do your best,

a C is nothing to be ashamed of.

Is it a straight " composition " class? Go up to the instructor on the first day

(if you can), talk to them, ask them if they have any suggestions and/or if they

can recommend a tutor. Have the tutor proofread and work with you on writing.

Sit in the center of the front row and pay attention every day. IMHO, it is

pretty rare for a professor to give a bad grade to a student they see is giving

a good effort every day. Also, the grad school probably requires the course

because it is something they feel is important.

Yeah, I had to keep B's for an academic scholarship when I was in college, so I

get that. I didn't really have a problem keeping the grades up. All I can say

is work your butt off trying to proofread the assignments. Sometimes going to

the professor can help depending on the professor. They will sometimes suggest

extra work to help bring your grade up. Once again, there are a lot of

proofreading software programs out there unless those are not allowed. If you

drop, is there another class that will be simpler? If any other class will be

just as hard you might as well stick with it.

Hi,

I second that suggestion of tutoring. Does your college or university have a

tutoring center? Also, you can work with your professor during their office

hours. What do you mean about " principles " and tutoring? Do you see a conflict

with receiving tutoring? Most professors are thrilled when students work with

writing tutors because the paper will be better and the student has more

opportunity for one-on-one assistance.

Her exact words are, " Students may use the www.smarthinking.com weblink for peer

editing throughout the course. However, students may not have friends, family

members, other teachers, tutors or anyone else proof, rewrite, write, edit or

change an essay, without the approval of the instructor. " Now if I had to pay

20 dollars to a tutor to proof my assignment, I would have no problem with it.

But to give 20 dollars a paper to some business that no doubt paid her to make

this rule... that goes against my principles. Its bad enough I have to spend

100+ dollars on a text book in a comp class, I won't pay $160 dollars to some

tutoring company that paid her. Beyond that I have no clue how to get her

permission to get a tutor seeing as how she hasn't answered my emails.

I guarantee you that your instructor is not being paid by smarthinking to refer

students. I am sure limiting tutoring to smarthinking it is the policy of the

institution you are taking the class with -- a syllabus is a contract and she is

being clear about the rules. Because this is an online class, there have been

academic honesty issues in the past where students submit work that is not their

own. When this happens, students frequently admit that they had some help but

" from a tutor " . True tutors [like smarthinking] don't rewrite papers as a

well-meaning friend or untrained tutor might be inclined to do. Likely, your

prof is just wanting to avoid any sticky situations and following the policy of

your college. She's definitely not getting kickbacks for referring students to

smarthinking. Remember -- your instructor is " real " and she actually wants to

help you become a better writer. Stating clear policies is a good policy and

should not be taken as unhelpful or unethical as someone suggested. I really

believe that if you need this class and approach it with a positive attitude,

take advantage of the tutoring services, ask for help and commit a lot of time

to writing and rewriting, you will learn a lot and have a good experience.

Professors want you to succeed.

However, I don't suggest online English courses for students who struggle with

writing, as you've indicated. If there's any way to swing an on-campus course,

you might feel more comfortable and supported. Just a thought. [i'm an English

prof, as you can probably gather.] Again, I'm certain she wants you to succeed.

Why not approach it with that attitude?

Best of luck,

Mich

[Also, yes textbook prices are outrageous but I doubt she had a say in which one

is used.]
