Guest guest
I've also had great success with GAPS, although with the exception of kombucha I have not done fermented foods. My family did go off dairy, wheat and most grains for 2 years and the change has been tremendous. We are now reintroducing raw dairy and so far, all is well.On May 27, 2010, at 5:51 PM, maryjos wrote: Have you checked into GAPS? Guest guest
Which foods contain amines? The basic principles of GAPS- high fat diet (coconut oil, ghee, roasted meats), healing bone broths, fermented foods and juicing fruits and veggies seems like it could modified to accommodate most any sensitivity. Guest guest
slow cooked meats & broths, fermented foods, many fruits and veges also salicylate sensitive (salicylates are natural asprins in most fruits and vegetables, coconut) I get repeatable effects from ingesting any of these foods eg amines give me skin rash, tummy cramps, diarrhoea, insomnia. Salicylates give me depressed mood, aching joints, bleeding issues. My tolerance has improved considerably since being on a strict gluten/dairy/palm free diet for 2 years. Guest guest
Can you eat avocado? You really need a lot of fat to heal a gut and avocado is a good source. I would try ghee, too. My family is dairy-free but is able to eat ghee which has the milk proteins removed. If you take digestive enzymes can you tolerate foods better?Pineapple and papaya are full of good enzymes. If you can tolerate those than that's a good thing. On May 27, 2010, at 8:01 PM, miranda.flemming wrote: slow cooked meats & broths, fermented foods, many fruits and veges also salicylate sensitive (salicylates are natural asprins in most fruits and vegetables, coconut) I get repeatable effects from ingesting any of these foods eg amines give me skin rash, tummy cramps, diarrhoea, insomnia. Guest guest
Miranda, the thing is, the people who are doing gaps are sensitive to everything too. The group I belong to is huge and very helpful, called gapshelp. Check it out and ask questions. Dr put the diet together, it is more complete than scd. Her website is gaps.me.com. It is pretty much the same principles as the wapf website. Eating the foods God gave us, the good healthy meats, real butter, veggies, plus the ferments which even my teenagers love. I have a severely autistic 12 year old child who was not vaccinated. He is so sensitive, he has seizures. We figured out years ago that almost every food caused them so we kept taking them out of his diet and he was down to 3 foods. At one point he was having one seizure every minute, showed on the eeg he was hooked up to for a month. He was having 17-25 grand mals a day. As of today, he is one week without a seizure. He is eating a huge variety of foods too. he is coming out of his silent world slowly but surely. One of my daughters has premature ovarian failure and after being on the diet just since January, it looks like her menses are going to resume. One of my other daughters has type 1 diabetes and while we did pretty good by following a very low carb diet and taking handfuls of supplements 4 times a day, her sugar is normal much of the time. Her drs are floored! I know she will get off insulin. We have all lost the weight we need too, for me it was 35 lbs. Have a great day! jo > > > > > > > > I am celiac and allergic to dairy and palm(olein) oils. also have rather bad sensitivities to amines and salicylates (but can tolerate small amounts since on strict gluten free/dairy free/palm free diet. Guest guest
did you change over gradually? Guest guest
jo, it's amazing what you are doing for your family with GAPS! What an amazing gift you're giving them. I know how much work it is and to do with 3 kids is remarkable. On May 28, 2010, at 5:08 AM, maryjos wrote: Miranda, the thing is, the people who are doing gaps are sensitive to everything too. Guest guest
It's really important to really do the GAPS diet and eliminate all the foods, especially all grains and dairy. I even had to remove eggs and coconut from my son's diet due to sensitivities. Only once all the foods that cause irritation are removed can your body start to heal.I am also a big believer in comprehensive stool analysis. I did it for my oldest son and my infant son and both had yeast and bad bacteria that had to be cleared out with the guidance of my Naturopath. My oldest son was missing 2 healthy strains of bacteria in his gut (Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria) both of which are essential for immune function. It's has taken 3 years but those are finally living in his gut at healthy levels. The changes in him are remarkable. I'm still working with my now 2 year old. He's had imbalances since infancy but through the diet and probiotics he is getting better too.On May 29, 2010, at 6:01 AM, miranda.flemming wrote: did you change over gradually? Guest guest
The thing with the gaps is it heals your leaky gut so you can eat more foods. Leaky gut is the reason people have allergies or sensitivities. Yeast over growth is also a problem. Dr says 80% of us has it. I have been searching for many years for good for myself and I have found it now. My son was eating 3 foods for about 2 years, anything else caused seizures. This 3 foods included any oils and drinks. So he was only ingesting 3 things. I felt desperate. He is now eating too many foods to count. The diet is so healing. You do have to start slow or you will get die off. For people who are eating sad, they need to start with sugar, processed foods and just go slowly with small changes. jo > > > > > > > > > > > > I am celiac and allergic to dairy and palm(olein) oils. also have rather bad sensitivities to amines and salicylates (but can tolerate small amounts since on strict gluten free/dairy free/palm free diet. Guest guest
, I am actually doing the diet with 5 kids. That is nothing though, there are some on my list who are doing the diet with 7 and even more children. The work is so so worth it and it is such a blessing to finally understand why I have 3 sick kids out of my 7 kids, none of whom were vaccinated either. It was donna Gates and dr campbell on youtube that lead me here. Once I saw them I knew what was going on! jo > > > > > > > > > > > > I am celiac and allergic to dairy and palm(olein) oils. also have rather bad sensitivities to amines and salicylates (but can tolerate small amounts since on strict gluten free/dairy free/palm free diet. Guest guest
Hi Miranda, Go slowly with the probiotics at first, if you're not used to them. I started a new one when my doctor put me on the GAPS diet. I'd taken probiotics for years, but was lacking Lactobacillus. I made the mistake of eating a full scoop of my probiotic for the first two days (probably five or more times what I should have started with). Well, the dieoff was FIERCE! It was so bad I had to spend a couple of days in bed. I think it was dieoff from Klebsiella pneumoniae (I had a huge overgrowth of it). My point is, go easy! You can become very sick if your gut flora is out of balance, and you have a huge dieoff of pathogenic organisms. I got better after a few days, but the first few days were HORRIBLE. I hope you're feeling better, soon! If it's any consolation, it took me a month before I could really tolerate any ghee or avocado. I've had to do the GAPS diet in baby steps. And I get really sick if I eat something I don't tolerate well (exhaustion, depression, anxiety). I'm still in the process of finding out what those things are! S. Guest guest
Someone just wrote in about food sensitivites and removing eggs and coconut form their son’s diet. How did you find out that your son sensitive to these things?
Guest guest
It may have been me since I removed both of those things from 's diet. At first I suspected there was a sensitivity to a food because he would have a red, irritated bottom. He was also often sneezy and sniffly. His doctor tested him for acute allergy (IgE) and delayed food sensitivities (IgG). It was found he had an acute allergy to eggs and a food sensitivity to coconut. Actually, he had multiple food sensitivities and has been on a restricted diet for some time.On Jun 1, 2010, at 6:00 PM, Caroline Norden wrote: Someone just wrote in about food sensitivites and removing eggs and coconut form their son’s diet.
