Guest guest
The uveitis support group is a small group I just joined. Uveitis is a rare and serious vision threatening eye disease. How does this relate to autism you may ask? I am the fifth parent in this uveitis support group to mention recently that our child with uveitis has an autistic sibling. Combine what could be some kind of autioimmune/autism connection with this survey that seven out of ten parents out there are not getting their children proper eye exams, and I feel that some of us might need a wake up call. http://www.vsp.com/newsroom/html/children_miss_eye_exams.jsp All children, at age six months and preschool age, on up to every other year need proper eye exams. http://www.allaboutvision.com/eye-exam/children.htm Eye chart tests like they give in schools won't detect any problems going on in the inner eye. Uveitis is inner eye inflammation and can only be seen when the eyes are dialated and looked at by a slit lamp. It is a silent disease. There can be no other symptoms until the eye damage is already done. Children usually don't mention things going on with their vision when they do have problems. Most all insurance pays for these exams! It's just a matter of scheduling the appointment.
