Guest guest
You can order any test you want form www.directlabs.com <http://www.directlabs.com/> - The Comprehensive Digestive Stool Analysis (CDSA) that most DANS use is listed there. Honestly for my money if I were going to do any tests before enzymes I might also want an IGG food allergy panel. It's a blood test but again you can order it w/o docs orders form www.directlabs.com <http://www.directlabs.com/> and they send you the kit from DDI (the lab that most DANs use anyway) and also direct you to the nearest lab to have the blood drawn. You just need to make sure it is a lab that draws blood from kids regularly. Other things I would (and/or did) do without a doctor would be: - If he tends apraxic I might try Nordic naturals ProEFA in addition to a small amount of CLO - Add a probiotic to the mix www.enzymestuff.com <http://www.enzymestuff.com/> - probiotics page for ideas/brands - I would (sorry) not bother with Kirkmans enzymes but use Houston instead www.houstonni.com <http://www.houstonni.com/> (AFP Peptizyde or Peptizyde for gluten and Casein, No Fenol for phenols and Zyme Prime for overall digestion. I would also not start with ZP is he is so constipated b/c that can tighten stools while it is helping foods to be better absorbed - When you see the DAN in August make sure you get plasma amino acid test done and essential fatty acid test done (If he tends aprxic I guarantee you that his aminos and EFAs are all out of whack) and an OAT test as well (BTW most of these can also be ordered through www.directlabs.com <http://www.directlabs.com/> for those who want/need this stuff and don't have DANs). Check out the Metametrix Lab website for explanation of much of this stuff (Their ION panel is a good deal and comes w/good interpretive guide) - If the enzymes help I would still consider removing gluten and casein one by one to see if there is a difference. The enzymes (Houston not Kirkman) allow many people to leave GFCF but not everyone can. I made a long term mistake allowing my daughter to continue eating dairy on the enzymes b/c we had no (detectable to me) behavioral issues from it (and stools were fine). IGG blood test later showed SEVERE immune response/inflammation in response to all forms of dairy. Josie Starting enzymes -- have stool test done first I'm new here -- posted a ? on finding a Dr last week. Son has apraxic language and SIGNIFICANT constipation since 2 months old. Not diagnosed as autistic due to not finding a Dr to trust and he is more apraxic than anything. Second question -- (thanks in advance!) -- I have ordered Kirkman enzymes and will be starting next week. Should I order a stool test first so I have the result (without enzymes) before seeing the DAN Dr in August? He's on Miralax, magnesium and CLO -- otherwise there wouldn't be any stool to test . So which labs work best for individuals without Drs. Our pediatrician is worthless.
Guest guest
I can't imagine getting a blood sample from my son -- it would be tramatic for him and the phlebotomist! How do they do it? He had a renal ultrasound and I had to almost sit on him!!! I was thinking a stool test would be a good start, but I would like to know what he is truly allergic to. He's not typical - looks very healthy -- in the 90th to 100th percentile in height, 75th in weight... so I have doubts on allergies. The constipation had been his main issue, but now he's showing cognitive delays and apraxia. (I visited the apraxia group and it sounds like constipation and apraxia is highly correlated) BUT, he has had cod liver oil, flax oil, antioxidants, and probiotics and a 50% organic diet since he was VERY young, so it's possible that it has helped keep the allergies muted. I give him Nordic Naturals Children's DHA https://www.nordicnaturals.com/direct/prodsummary.asp?ID=1 -- it easy he loves them. He gets a single or double dose. That combined with flax oil should = ProEFA -- or am I missing something? I eliminated dairy entirely at age 2 1/2 for 6 weeks and saw no difference in him. The gluten is a little more difficult since he's only eats in my home 1/2 the time -- hence the reason why I'm trying enzymes. The other reason is it just makes more sense to me. He also had his shots at 6 -7 weeks -- which is right when the constipation started -- I have major mom guilt on that one -- wondering if he's mercury poisoned! I sounds like some of you have used CLA for mild chelation. My concern is the constipation -- with Miralax, magnesium and CLO he has a BM every other day. Is chelation safe for a child that tends to be constipated? It's frustrating the lack of Drs or ND that know anything about this - - I am only 5 miles from Bastyr University! Thank you for your ideas and input -- I'm off to order tests tomorrow. Not sure about the blood test though -- anyone have any hints? Guest guest
Just wanted to say something regarding the blood work. The DAN practioner we went to recently wanted to take the bloods on my 4 yr old daughter. She is non verbal, can be hard to handle at times and we had just went through a 2 hr ov to boot so tantrums galore. They used what they called a " papoose " . I am a tall girl so I was pretty sure I could hold her down and keep her soothed as much as possible. This wonderful papoose thingie, wraps the child in what I called the burrito position. Like how they taught us to wrap them as newborns. She did not even move, did not care what they were doing as of much and of course the deep wrap pressure wound up being soothing to her as well. I was simply AMAZED! Perhaps there is somthing like that avail for the work up? HTH Patti Starting enzymes -- have stool test done first > > > > I'm new here -- posted a ? on finding a Dr last week. Guest guest
I can't thank you enough for your replies! I will keep you posted! You've given me a lot to go on. I just ordered the Enterolab panel -- that'll affect the bills this month! My insurance sucks and my ex- husband hasn't paid support in over a year -- and I make too much to qualify for anything. Oh well, I have played the passive game too long. > > > > You can order any test you want form www.directlabs.com > > <http://www.directla <http://www.directlabs.com/> bs.com/> - The > Comprehensive Digestive Stool > Analysis > > (CDSA) that most DANS use is listed there. > > > > > > > > Honestly for my money if I were going to do any tests before > enzymes I might > > also want an IGG food allergy panel. Guest guest
That sounds great. I've seen the contraption they use for pediatric Xrays -- looks like a torture device! But the deep pressure might work for him -- he responds well to the weighted vest -- well about half the time, that is > > > > You can order any test you want form www.directlabs.com > > <http://www.directlabs.com/> - The Comprehensive Digestive Stool > Analysis > > (CDSA) that most DANS use is listed there. > > > > > > > > Honestly for my money if I were going to do any tests before > enzymes I might > > also want an IGG food allergy panel. Guest guest
We just saw a pediatric gastroenterologist at CHOP on Friday, and she said we needed to stop the enzymes for three to five days for one particular stool analysis. Otherwise, they alter the results. If you order your own tests, ask them what your child can and cannot be taking before collecting the samples. Otherwise, you can start enzymes, then stop them temporarily if the DAN orders a test that requires that. Also, there is an alternate version of the test which does not require supension of the enzymes, but apparently it is dramatically more expensive. Regarding cognitive problems and apraxia -- that's hard to measure while the apraxia is in full-force. When we had our son evaluated, the team recommended a self-contained special education preschool. We rejected this as not appropriate, so he was put in an integrated classroom instead. Cut to a year later -- his speech still needs help, but tests as age appropriate, and his IQ tests in the superior range. Quite a relief, to be sure. I'm not saying ignore obvious problems, but be aware that apraxia makes it so hard for these kids to show what they know. Regarding blood work -- a talented phlebotomist can draw blood painlessly even from a child, but you don't get to pick who does the job at the lab. Some things in life are necessary but just stink, and this is probably going to be on that list. The fewer times the better, so when you go test for everything you can think of! Keep in mind that DAN's and other docs often put kids on meds or supplements that require regular blood tests to monitor blood levels, liver function, etc., so this process may be a regular feature of your medical life for some time. in NJ > > I'm new here -- posted a ? on finding a Dr last week.
