Enzymes and probiotics would both be great.

For constipation, you may also put him on Magnesium Citrate which has many

other benefits in addition of loosening the stool, improving the sleep,

assisting the enzyme action as well as calcium and zinc absorption just to

name a few.

Definitely try to get him off that as soon as you can

Enzymes can usually help.

I get my kids labs done at Great Plains, and they are going to be in

Seattle in August.

http://www.greatplainslaboratory.com/autism-conference.html

They have been great in terms of recommending which tests to do and

are very knowledgeable about the biomedical issues of autism. We are

going to the clinic in Milwaukee this year because we also don't have

a doctor here. It is an ND that they are having in Milwaukee, but a

very knowledgeable one in terms of the different possible problems,

and recommending appropriate labs.

Dana That was the most/best information I have been able to find out

about Miralax -- thank you. I want to get him off of it but here's

what I'm doing now -- to give you an idea --

daily

15g Miralax

250-500mg of magnesium oxide (Nature's Sunshine ground and put in

applesause)

1/4 tsp Nature's sunshine LB Extract

8 gel caps cod liver oil (Nordic Naturals DHA)

and sprinkles of flax meal on high fiber cereal

fresh papaya or pineapple (about once or twice a week)

cookie of choice fig newton

I am ready to start enzymes but just don't know where to start.

BTW - tried no dairy for 5 weeks -- no difference. Have not

eliminated gluten but have tried to cut back. (between preschool,

daycare, 2 evenings at his fathers it's difficult to control diet)

Organic diet at my home -- which is about 50% of his intake.

THANK YOU for whatever advice you can give.

PSS -- Is the DAN conference worthwhile? I'm a single mom and value

my time at a lot per hour!!!

I would try switching his magnesium to citrate form for the

constipation. I generally works well for that and may help you get

him off the miralax. I believe it is also better absorbed than oxide

which could help with many other things as well.

My daughter was on Miralax for two years (I shudder when I think about

it, after what I know now!!) I couldn't get her bowels to move for

NOTHING! I had tried everything. I finally tried the magnesium

citrate powder from Kirkman and she loves it and it works! I drink

coffee in the am, so I have gotten her to drink lemon herbal tea and I

put a teaspoon in the tea along with organic honey (from our area as

it helps with pollen allergies). The powder is stable when mixed with

hot (I checked with Kirkman) and her bowels have been moving! You

might have to play with the dosage, but it really has worked for us.

My daughter is also non-autistic, but developmentally delayed and has

apraxia of speech. She has been taking enzymes for about 3 months,

and has increased her speech as well as gained weight/height. I must

attribute it to the enzymes because, again, nothing else has worked.

Just thought I would share that with you.

An herbalist I consulted suggested magnesium oxide instead of

magnesium citrate -- she said it was abosorbed better. BUT - I see

2 of you are recommending magnesium citrate, so it looks like more

research! Are you using any enzymes or just

It sounds like our kids are very similar!

Glad it was helpful.

Switch to citrate and give 500-1000mg.

EFAs constipated my family until our deficiencies were reduced. In

the beginning of EFA supplementation, I had to give more than 1000mg

magnesium daily just to deal with the constipation caused by four

drops of EFA.
