Hi all

I just wanted to post a link to some *amazing* historical pictures of

children with severe hypothyroidism, before and after treatment with

natural thyroid hormone. Click on this link:

http://www.thyroidresearch.com/index.php

....and then, in the categories on the left, click " picturechild " .

I am completely stunned at the difference in these children after

treatment, even after just a few months.

I am in the process of trying to get the correct thyroid labs for my

son, and recognized many of the same features in him (especially the

distended tummy/physical shape). I can't help it, I'm getting that

tingly feeling that happens right before a big mystery is solved....

well, I'd better not get too excited yet, right? :-)

Hi Rene and all,

Both my husband and myself have extensive family histories of

thyroid problems and are looking into if that may be part of the

problem for my children. My kids are both very thin though and in

most of these photos, the kids are not. They are growing in height,

just not well. I walked past a picture of my daughter yesterday and

did a double take when I realized that the photo was taken three

years ago and she looks exactly the same! Does anyone else have

children with thyroid problems who are very thin?

I have hypothyroid and have to take synthroid daily. My dad does as

well. My NT daughter has a slight visible goiter but her blood

work came back OK and the ultrasound in Dec 2005 showed it was

enlarged. My sister had cancer of her para-thyroid and had it

removed. My 13 yo ASD son's thyroid level is fine. Go figure. If

your child is too thin and active it typically that means he/she has

hyperthyroid which can be disfiguring. They end up getting the

bulging eyes. Either way get some lab work done.

Last I recall the drug of choice for low (hypothyroid) is Armour.

If I remember right its not synthetic and it contains both thyroid

hormones and you don't have to rely on the body to convert one to

the other like you do with synthroid but don't take my word for it.

Maybe will see this and respond, but if she doesn't here's

the link to a response she gave to someone else in a similar position

on the stopthethyroidmadness forum:

hope this helps

Thanks Rene! This is in line w/ what my " mommy gut " says. They are

both terribly thin/small and insanely hyperactive. Now I just need

to find an MD who will treat them. Any advice on convincing a doc

to treat them even though their labs show they are " in range? "

Try going to your local pharmacies to find out which doctors

prescribe Armour in your area. They are most likely the enlightened

few....

Thank you, René, and Anne! It helps a lot to have you helping to spread the

word about how hopelessly ignorant docs are, these days, about diagnosing

and treating low thyroid and low adrenals (which are all too common among us

mercury toxic moms & our kids!)

It is especially crazy-making when docs use their bogus TSH test with its

skewed ranges to pooh-pooh, discount, dismiss, and disregard, the legitimate

concerns of parents for their children's and their own thyroid health. What

else are doc going to do when the phamaceutical companies that manufacture

synthetic T4 are the ones who provide the curriculum and pay medical schools

to indoctrinate (pardon the pun) them with their TSH gospel?

Some of us have learned to order our own labs and our own supplements -

because if we waited to find the mythical thyroid-smart doc our kids would

never have the thyroid/adrenal hormones that are necessary for proper growth

and brain development.

www.stopthethyroidmadness.com has a lot of good information

BTW, René, I'm working on a response to your posts to STTM & A_T2. A bit

hectic here and I need to be able to gather my wits to respond; you're on my

mind, though!

.... ;-)

In general, a child who is terribly thin and insanely hyperactive would not

likely need thyroid supplementation.

I appreciate all this dialogue re: thyroid problems. However, I am

running around like mad getting ready for house guests and will be

traveling the next few weeks so I don't have time to comment or look

into any of this at the moment.

I agree that we don't fit the " classic " case of thyroid trouble, but

I also know that too many doctor's have overlooked things in my

children because " normally... " They are not " normal " and I don't

think they ever will be if we don't start thinking cautiously

outside the box.

I just wish I wasn't in such a brain fog so I could grasp all this

better!

I will pick this up when things settle down around here. Thanks

again to ALL who share their experiences and feedback. I certainly

want to do the right thing to help my children w/out doing any harm

in the meantime.
