Is LDN compatible with Plaquenil?

New here---hello Everyone,

I just started Plaquenil 2 months ago for Sjogren's, and started taking

Levothroid for hypothyroidism.

I've got my next Rheumatologist appointment next Thursday and thought

I'd ask the doctor about using LDN. Would I have to quit the

Plaquenil, or can I take both at the same time?

My bloodwork shows lots of auto-immune antibodies: ANA speckled-high

titer, SS-A, SS-B, thyroglobulin Ab, etc. My symptoms are very dry

eyes, low WBC, and low platelet count. But I feel pretty healthy

otherwise--no fatigue or joint pain, for example. Does LDN help with

the blood count problems?

Thanks,

Calli

Hi Calli,

This site tells what drugs to avoid when taking LDN:

I don't know whether LDN helps with blood count problems or not, but it is

probably worth a try.

All the best,

Hi Calli,

I believe Plaquenil is designed to suppress the immune system -- which

is contrary to what LDN does. Your rheumy should be able to explain

the actions better than me...I've never taken Plaquenil although I do

have Sjogren's. I also have Hashi's and vitiligo. I take Levothroid

and Cytomel for my Hashi's.

Do you know if your rhuemy is familiar with LDN already --??--

Does anyone know what or if there is a protocol for LDN being taken

simultaneously with Interferon treatment for Hep C?

Hi Steve,

For a list of medications that should be avoided when taking LDN, visit

Have you considered taking colloidal silver (CS) for your hep C? For information

about CS visit

Here is another treatment option for hep C that you may find of interest:

I don't know if she is or not, but I plan to ask her at my next

appointment (soon).

I think the LDN benefit or compatibility issue might depend on whether

LDN " reves up " the immune system (in which case it would work against

Plaquenil); or whether it " regulates " the immune system---helping it

to distinguish between actual threats and self-attack.

Plaquenil is an immunomodulator, but the reason it helps is not well

understood. One article I read said that Plaquenil slowly changes the

pH of cells, making them less likely to be marked for " attack " by

antibodies. Whether or not this is contradictory to the effects of

increased beta-endorphins is what I'm trying to understand.

I'm a bit afraid that my Rheumy will think this is all quackery, in

which case I won't get real information from her, but merely a

" reaction " to the idea.

HI Steve,

They do not work together. I will send you what I have on Hep C and the e-mail about what not to take with LDN

Hi all

When I first started LDN, about two years ago, I was on Plaquenil, and

used the two drugs in combination several months. I cant remember any

significant side effects from that experience.

What I have read, is that Plaquenil like LDN is merely a modulator of

the immune system, not an immune supressor. The drug is used to treat

different infections like malaria. Recent studies show that plaquenil

also has effect agains HIV.

Did you discontinue the Plaquenil on your doctor's advice? And did you

notice more improvement from the LDN--is that why you stopped Plaquenil?

Thanks

Hi

I have several AI's including Sjogren and was on Plaquenil from 2003

until april 2006. I had some effect of Plaq, but also side effects,

especially problems with focusing eyes. In addition to this, LDN

(which I started in february 2006) worked well on most of the Sjogren

symptoms, so that is why I ended Plaq.

Actually I felt great the period I used both drugs.

Maybe the two drugs work in synergism? But I do not know if this co-

use is recommended. Maybe someone can ask Skip or some other pharmacist

about this.

Hi All,

I have been on LDN for about 15 days now and feeling good.

My question is that I have a dentist appt next week to have my teeth cleaned. When I go there because of my Mitro Valve Prolapse I have to take 4 Antibodies I think is Amoxcillian or something like that before I go. Will this interfere with the LDN??

Thank you so much

Judy

ANYTHING you do once on LDN will work the way it's Supposed To, as if you were 'Normal', except for opiod based drugs since they're directly playing tug of war.

Anything else will work the way it's Supposed To, so if it's an Antiibotic, it'll be the Best Darn Antibiotic there is, killing all those biotics. LOL

I think docs should prescribe 'normal' people LDN for the duration of their antibiotic courses. JMHO

That's hopeful.

I got a short email from Skip in reply to this question; basically he

said LDN has not been tested in combination with Plaquenil (just

paraphrasing, not quoting). It didn't really answer my question---I

guess I should have asked whether it would be harmful to take both....

Gee thanks for the information ALana.

I went over to the site and was really surprised to read what I did.

Thank you again so much I guess that answers my question. I will not take the antibiotics for my teeth cleaning. It is 4 pills at 500 ml each.

WOW

Hi Calli,

If you have Hashmoto's, the autoimmune hypothroidism, not all thyroid medicines work.

Most don't do anything for T3, which is affected by Hashmoto's.  I was on Synthroid for 15 years; it was prescribed to me by 2 different endocrinologist at 2 different practices.  I was extremely frustrated with still having so many  symptoms. I found a different practice* and during the evaluation one of the first questions she asked is " "Why are you on Synthroid?" She put me on Nature Thyroid and I'm so much better! I lost 10 pounds in 2 weeks and the medicine was my only change!

It's very inexpensive, and unlike Synthroid, doesn't contain gluten or milk for those with allergies.

Fyi: My diagnoses

Hashmoto's, Sjogrens, Celiacs, RA, Raynaud's, and I some neuropathy.

Prescriptions:

Nature Thyroid, Nabumetone, LDN (starting low &slow) 1/4 of a tablet nightly)Vitamin D, Folic Acid.

I take other vitamins as well.

Keep asking questions like you're doing. Patient blogs are terrific and have helped me along the way to better health.

Weaning off Plaquinil. My new rheumy and hubby encouraged me to try again.  I have and too many side effects. I asked the practice* who switched my thyroid med about and she asked, ever here of LDN. I said no and she said though not.

Started LDN this week and so far so good. The only side effect are vivid dreams, but they are better than the scary dreams I had with Plaquinil (among a lot of other side effects).

We all know (The Patients), we are all different and not everthing works for everyone. Keep pushing and keep reading.  We have 1 body, 1 life. Despite the odds, I'm going to whatever I can to be here for my family as long as I can and enjoy it!

I take other vitamins as well.

Good luck and Good Health!
