Guest guest
My son is low in copper. Is there a food source I could give him to help elevate it? Would you actually supplement with copper. He is so full of metals already, I have a hard time thinking of putting more in. Thanks, Darci
Guest guest
Darci, how did you determine copper status? (Serum, hair, etc.) My son actually is low copper too, as per hair and serum levels. I was too afraid to supplement it, and instead began getting ready for chelation by upping his zinc. He started getting spontaneous nosebleeds, and then at 25 mg/zinc per day got the mother of all unstoppable nosebleeds that sent us to emergency. At that point I stopped all zinc for a week or so, and began adding in copper with great care, eventually working up to 1 mg/day and 10 mg zinc per day. After about half a year, I moved him up to 2 mg copper and 20 mg zinc. He is doing well on this schedule. This experience flies in the face of all the things I thought I knew about supplementing for chelation, or what is " normal " for autism. I had a Beta-2 microglobulin test run to check for low-level cadmium poisoning, since cadmium can interfere with copper, and the amounts of copper/zinc we have found helpful reflect Andy's recommendations for cadmium chelation. Nothing came up, however. Nuts, esp. brazil nuts, are a good source of copper, as is buckwheat. I understand your hesitation to add in copper. Ironically, it is one of our most essential supplements here. take care Rene > > > My son is low in copper. Is there a food source I could give him to > help elevate it? Guest guest
Hi , A Metametrix element analysis (blood draw) showed him at .45 reference being .52-2.00. This same test showed him low in Magnesium, Selenium, and Zinc. We have never had nose bleeds. He does show low in Cadmium .014 ref less then .040 on this same test. It is things like this that make me concerned to start chelation. Did you continue to chelate even though he was low? Could the metals also be interfering with copper absorption? I do feed him Buckwheat pasta once every 3 days and I will get some Brazil nuts. I also read that sesame seeds and braised calf liver are high in copper. My guy is so sensitive to anything I give him and has been having petite seizure swarms so I just want to be careful. Thanks so much for sharing your experience and the helpful hints. Thanks! Would you actually supplement with copper. My #1 was low copper. I gave him a copper supplement. He required 4mg per day for a while, then 2mg per day. Now I give him a multi which contains 100% of zinc and copper, and this works well for him. Dana
Guest guest
Thanks Dana, Do you mind telling me how you knew he was low in copper? Were there specific things you noticed without testing? What multi vit are you now giving? I currrently use the Brainchild products. Thanks again. Darci > > > > > > My son is low in copper. Is there a food source I could give him to > > help elevate it? It would be interesting to see if it also showed an all-low pattern (our family's tests do). >We have never had nose bleeds. Yes, and we have had good results. We just needed to sort out the copper/zinc problem first. Could the metals > also be interfering with copper absorption? This seems possible to me. Digestive enzymes at every meal/snack may help this. I supplement copper in the morning and noon supplements, and use zinc and molybdenum in the supper and bedtime supplements, with the idea that seperating them may help optimize both zinc and copper absorbtion. I would think that food-based copper sources are the best way to go until you know that you need more. Thanks so much for > sharing your experience and the helpful hints. > > Thanks! You're welcome! Guest guest
Hi , So it is best to get it all sorted out prior to chelation is what I am getting. I just went back and looked at his tests from Jan. 06 to see what they showed, the blood test showed low .47 (ref.52-2.00) and the hair from DDI showed 19 (ref 8-16). Do you know what is a better indicator, because they say completely different things. I am so anxious to get started with the chelation, I feel like his time is ticking away and he is so unhealthy. He does have dark circles under his eyes which is probably because of all his low minerals and vitamins. There are times I notice a blue tone around his mouth, not his lips, just around his mouth. He also does a gaging type of thing with his saliva. I will be looking into signs. Thanks again so much. Guest guest
Darci, Given your hair test results I will change my advice. I think you should seriously consider reducing/eliminating high copper foods, at least until you get to the bottom of this. Hair copper is considered fairly accurate in measuring body burden (even when mineral transport is deranged), and given that the symptoms of copper toxicity are almost identical to that of mercury, it can be hard to tell what's what. Copper toxicity also makes mercury toxicity worse. In Andy Cutler's Hair Test book (p. 117) he says that in copper deficiency ALL of the measures of copper - hair, blood, rbc, serum ceruloplasmin - will be low. So you might want to get some more tests run before you decide what to do next. A lot of people have decided to do a copper-loweing protocol based on hair test results like yours, FWIW. You can use the Onibasu search engine with search terms like " copper lowering protocol " (or similar) and " andrewhallcutler " to see what that is. I think the high incidence of copper toxicity in the ASD population, and the rarity of copper deficiency, makes the probability of having too much copper, rather than too little, all the more likely. please feel free to email me privately if you wish Rene > > Hi , > > So it is best to get it all sorted out prior to chelation is what I > am getting. Guest guest
> Do you mind telling me how you knew he was low in copper? Were there > specific things you noticed without testing? I gave my #1 zinc, just like I gave my other 3 kids. He started really grinding his teeth, and he had a nosebleed. Low copper is one cause of nosebleeds. Giving copper eliminated the nosebleed, plus it also eliminated the teeth grinding [along with cal/mag, thank you to the person who mentioned that]. >>What multi vit are you > now giving? I currrently use the Brainchild products. Henry's brand basic multi, from my local health food store. Dana
