Subject: ( ) I need lots of help with this one.........

Hi guys it's me again LOL.....

Well can't get enough of his ABC's and 123's and today his grandpa

calls me on the phone and tells me that he thinks is ready to start

trying to read. Does anyone have any idea of some good books or videos that

would teach pre reading skills. It needs to be something plain and simple

and nothing too flashy or he'll get distracted. Any advice would be greatly

appreciated because I have NO idea where to start. Thanks so much everyone

for your help once again. :)

You can look up " Reader Rabbit " for one.

Try 's Book House from Edmark. It's very user friendly software

with really nice graphics.

Reader Rabbit is excellent. Also excellent are the Jump Start software

programs. Dr. Seuss has some good programs, too. One of the best we found was

the Scholastic brand Clifford Reading, and Clifford Learning Activities. My son

is very visual in how he learns, so these things are terrific. Very well done.

Some of these programs you can buy in the cheap section of Best Buy's software,

and they are very reasonable. Another suggestion, if your child loves computers

is to get the Freddie The Fish games, which are very fun, and they are

educational as well, though they don't focus on one skill, such as reading, the

way the other programs do.

Clifford also has a beginner reading series. This is available through

Scholastic as well. They have beginning readers and readers and software packs.

You can shop online at Scholastic.com, or I think these were available at Best

Buy as well, but I'm not positive. Through Scholastic, I got the Bob series of

books for learning, and they are very good, very simple, and kids really respond

to them. They are a good size, too.

You might check out the Love and Learning program. It's a series of DVDs, books

and audiotapes that helps teach reading. We got it for my 2 year old son who has

Down Syndrome, but my 5 year old with Asperger's just glommed right on to them

and now he can read. Seriously - books like Bread & Jam For Frances and Caps For

Sale and his books. He's totally reading them.

You need to find an educational bookseller. They will be the ones who sell

readers and things to the schools. Most are run from normal bookshops and sell

to the public. They should have a large variety of preschool readers. We

bought some for our kids and they are great because the language is very

repetitive and the stories are fun to read.

Hi!

I think reading the same thing over and over is good

for them. They know what word is coming, and then they

see it on the page and think they're reading it. I

think this is an important feeling of accomplishment

in this area. Especially with kids on the " spectrum "

(who like predictability, pattern, etc.). I read Dr.

Seuss books (the reader books - they're simple, and

not as long). Especially " The Cat in the Hat " and

" Green Eggs and Ham " over and over. He still asks for

it! Playing Mother Goose poems set to music in the car

is good, too. It helps them hear pattern, which is a

good pre-reading exercise.

Hope this helps.

Try to start by teaching him sight words.

Do an internet search for sight words and

you should come up with some stuff.

There is also Jr. Phonics, that

is what my son LOVED and what he used to teach himself how to read at 3-4

Louie taught himself to read at 3, with the Yellow Pages. Taught

himself sequential numbers at the same time. :)
