Guest guest
Hi Joy, While some in our group have had success in getting into California's Regional Centers with a diagnosis of Asperger's, it is not easy. I tried with my son and was turned down. And if he was evaluated and told he was " normal, " I would doubt he'd have a chance. Guest guest
I just heard from my friend. It was through the Redwood Coast Regional Center he was evaluated & told he was ok. Joy
Guest guest
I wouldn't go by what they say. I'd get another evaluation. The San Diego Regional Center told us my AS son he didn't qualify for services even though he has rampant AS and a few other things, too. They're looking for classic autism and mental retardation. Guest guest
Has she tried contacting Valley Mountain Regional Center? It's based in Modesto, but covers most of the central valley and the foothills. They helped us connect with Fresno Diagnostic Center, which is what most of the schools here in the foothills prefer for a diagnosis, I think. They were very helpful, and even provided transportation for us down to Fresno, altho I don't think they do that anymore, due to cutbacks and such. The VMRC office here in San s never had any problem with a diagnosis of Asperger's. Pat-Mom to Josh and Sara (17 yo and 14 yo, both AS) Joy <joiful1970@...> wrote: Hi, My name is Joy & have been a member for years, although I have not received email/digest for a while now. My 12 yr old as AS. I live in NJ, but have an online friend who lives in Eureka, CA. She's had problems with her 5 yr old. she had him evaluated last year throught the school system (I think) but he was found to be " normal. " He's had a hard time adjusting to Kindergarten. She's had to pick him up early from school. He's been hiding under tables, kicking the teacher, etc... Her ped. referred her to a psychologist in the San. Fran. area. (I don't know his name.) I did a litte research online & found the Redwood Coast Regional Center <http://www.php.com/include/agency/agency_item.php?AgencyID=1616> . Does anyone have any experience with this place? Here are her words: We are seeing a psychologist of some kind. Our pedi was only suggesting this one guy as an option and no one else. I don't think he does much of this kind of referring. I think if we went out and found someone we wanted to be reffered to he would do that but I really don't know how to find someone on my own. and if anyone knows of a good Dr. for an evaluation anywhere in Northern Ca. SF Bay Area and above would be good but we could even travel to the Sacramento area. If anyone could help she/I would really appreciate it. Thanks, Joy ston
Guest guest
Joy, I live about an hour south of Eureka & my 8 yr old son has qualified for services through Redwood Coast Regional Center for his AS...His referral came from the Humboldt County Public Health nurse, she was involved because we discovered that he had lead poisoning. Their decision was made based on a Psychoeducational Assessment, his mental health records, school records & info that got from me. The Psychoeducational Assessment was done by a very nice woman named Jan us who is a licensed Educational Psychologist, speech therapist & marriage family therapist. She is located in Eureka. We were referred there by RCRC as part of determining eligibility for services. He was also seen by Dr. Orm Aniline through Humboldt County Mental Health Childrens-Youth-Family Services, mainly for medications, also in Eureka. I hope she finds the help she needs. I too started in kindergarten with my son & it hasn't been easy to get him what he needs. Please pass along my contact info to your friend if she'd like it. Hope my little bit of info helps. ~~ > > > Hi, > > My name is Joy & have been a member for years, although I have not > received email/digest for a while now. Guest guest
We had taken our son to the local medical clinic for something routine, and the doctor there had concerns and referred us to VMRC. VMRC got the ball rolling towards Fresno Diagnostic Center. FDC did the actual testing and diagnosis. Does that help? Guest guest
Thanks, I forwarded the info along. I guess I should give her this group's name & let her join herself. She also has a son that'll be 2 in Jan, & a baby due in March so she doesn't have much time on her hands. Joy > > > > Hi, > >
