The Hidden Curriculum

This conference will address the hidden curriculum and its

applicability to individuals on the autism spectrum (including

Asperger Syndrome). The Hidden Curriculum is comprised of knowledge

that is not typically taught formally to neurotypical children and

youth, but is acquired via incidental learning. The Hidden Curriculum

plays a crucial role in the development of all children. Violation of

Hidden Curriculum rules can have an adverse affect on school

performance and on how well a student/child is able to positively

relate to his peers, community and home. Strategies to teach the

hidden curriculum and other social skills will be presented and the

cycle of tantrums, rage and meltdowns will also be explored.

About the Speaker:

Myles, PhD, is an associate professor in the Department

of Special Education at the University of Kansas and co-director of

the Department's Asperger Syndrome and autism graduate program. She

writes and speaks internationally on Asperger Syndrome and autism.

Her recent books include Asperger Syndrome and Sensory Issues:

Practical Solutions for Making Sense of the World, and Asperger

Syndrome and Difficult Moments: Practical Solutions for Tantrums,

Rage and Meltdowns (co-authored by Jack Southwick). Myles was

the recipient of the Autism Society of America's Outstanding

Professional Award in 2004. Her 2001 book Asperger Syndrome and

Adolescence: Practical Solutions for School Success (co-authored by
