Guest guest
Hi Tricia, I'm a 27 yrs old woman diagnosed with Asperger's just 7 months ago. I believe my father has Asperger's too but he refuses to be tested. My mom also believes my dad has it. So I would say yes it's possible it's genetic. ---Nikki Lynn ( ) i would like to know....how many families here have multiple children with AS HI EVERYONE....MY NAME IS TRICIA. Guest guest
Hi Tricia! My 6 yr old son is the only DIAGNOSED autistic in our family that we are aware of, BUT my 1st, 3rd, and 4th sons have AS tendencies and the youngest acts similar to the way the 6 yr old did at his age. My father definitely fits the AS diagnosing criteria, as does my middle brother who my mother is constantly telling me the the 6 yr old reminds her of. I have AS tendencies. My husband's father fits within the AS diagnosing criteria and my husband is beginning to wonder if that's not why his father can't hold down a job for long or keep a relationship. My husband fits within the diagnosing criteria and as we're learning how to deal with our son, he's also learning how to deal with himself. We have been going through family trees and finding people on both sides that fit within the criteria and now we understand why they acted the way they did/do!! : ) Genetics definitely fits with our family!! mother of /8/anxiety, GERD, asthma /6/AS, anxiety, epilepsy, asthma Hunter/4/NT, asthma Dylan/1/NT, heart murmur ( ) i would like to know....how many families here have multiple children with AS HI EVERYONE....MY NAME IS TRICIA. Guest guest
I have my son with High Functioning Autism and an older son with ADHD not two with autism though. I have heard that these two disabilities are in the same family by one Dr. and was told the two are completely different and totally opposite by another Dr. Funny I think how you can get two totally different answers by two different Drs. > > We don't have a firm diagnosis of AS just yet but if that's what our DS's > final diagnosis winds up being both my cousin and I will have our eldest > boys dx with ADHD, OCD, ODD and AS. > > ~, proud mama of , beth and Braden > -- ( ) i would like to know....how many families here > have multiple children with AS > > HI EVERYONE....MY NAME IS TRICIA. Guest guest
I have a son with adhd/bipolar and his daughter is AS. I was told that they were in the same family. Also, any depressive disorder that was in the family predisposes the autism. Yes, it is so confusing how some Dr's will say one thing and some Dr's have other ideas/opinions. Guest guest
I was also told that AS can stem from other mood disorders in your family. I have bi-polar and so do a few others in my family. My doctor also said that any kind of drug problems workaholics alcoholics ect. Anything that is considered mental illness can trigger AS in your children's genes. My kids never had a hope of escaping lol ( ) i would like to know....how many families here > have multiple children with AS > > HI EVERYONE....MY NAME IS TRICIA. Guest guest
Hi! I've wondered, too...my son has PDD/HFA, and his cousin has low-functioning autism. Guest guest
HI!! Good question!! My 6 yr has AS and Sensory Dysfunction. My 9yr old is going to be evaluated for Sensory Dysfunction.(Definitely has it though. He has to squeeze things and those stress balls to not work, he needs full body squeezing) My hubby has self-dx AS. I have been dx with clinical depression. My mom was bi-polar. So I quess we are just a dysFUNctional family. I have read that at one point they felt AS was genetically link to the father. In my situation-my two (DH and DS) are the same. My DS is more outgoing than my DH. But his mom just thought he was a bad kid and gave up. Cori mom to ph 9, Left Clubfoot and to 6, AS and SI Dysfunction
Guest guest
Yes, genetics can play a part in this. Lots of us have older relatives with AS or AS-like traits. Stick around and you'll see. I'm convinced that my son's grandfather has these traits, for example. Welcome to the group! Liz On Jul 21, 2006, at 5:25 PM, tricia wrote: > HI EVERYONE....MY NAME IS TRICIA. Guest guest
HI all. I also think there is a genetic link. My twin boys (18) have AS and now with hindsight I can say that their father definately had aspects of AS as well. So did his father. But they were not so affected that they couldn't fit in when necessary. But both father and grandfather had hmmm, unusual social styles... ;-) Paddyo
