Guest guest
My heart goes out to your son and his situation. It would be great if he could be under the care of a DAN doctor and get a laboratory hair analysis for heavy metal poisoning. Heavy metal poisoning can cause violence, and so can auditory disorders. In my limited experience, psychiatrists don't have a clue when it comes to autism. They do not realize that mental problems originate below the neck in the liver and digestive tract. Here are some websites that may be helpful to you: _www.woodmed.com_ (http://www.woodmed.com) , _www.hriptc.org_ (http://www.hriptc.org) , _www.thedaviscenter.com_ (http://www.thedaviscenter.com) , and _www.autismresearchinstitute.com_ (http://www.autismresearchinstitute.com) . You can consult a pharmacist with questions as to whether abrupt withdrawal from Risperidal can cause seizures. They can even print out a sheet about any medication you have questions about. This is a temporary arrangement my son even being there, he has been very violent the last few months, (he is 14) and is waiting to go into residential care designed for developmental. But this doctor, he suddenly stopped Risperidal, (which I wanted my son to go off of anyway, but his regular doc said he needed to be weaned off of it) and Friday they said they thought he had a seizure. We have never seen anything close to a seizure in him before! I am wondering if this doctors negligence could have caused this. Guest guest
When stopping Risperdal a doctor may recommend that a patient gradually reduce the dosage in an effort to avoid potentially harmful side effects. Although serious withdrawal symptoms are not common when stopping Risperdal, they are possible and every measure should be taken to avoid them. This is true for a lot of medications, I dont understand why your sons dr took him off cold turkey like that...What an idiot! Guest guest
my sentiments exactly Donna! This doctor is the head doctor at this facility, and considers it his kingdom. Guest guest
Have they added any new meds that might be causing seizures or are contraindicated with the risperdal? Even so, one would need to wean him off the risperdal. They have recently been black box warnings added to some meds (particularly for ADHD) so perhaps the director/manager of the place your son is panicked and took people off various meds...I have no idea if Risperdal was among them. They should have documented the " seizure " they observed. Ask them to tell you how the person/people who witnessed it described it in the documentation. How long did it last, what type, did he just stare for a few seconds (absence seizure or ASD tuning out the chaos/unfamiliar surroundings?) or was it a tonic-clonic seizure or what? Does he have any mercury amalgam dental fillings? When was his last vaccine or flu shot? Have you done a DDI hair test with counting rules applied? S S <BR> In a message dated 2/19/2006 5:58:12 P.M. Guest guest
Thankfully he has never even had a cavity, so no fillings. the last vaccine was August a " mercury free/thimersol free DPT shot. They also said at 14 years old I didn't have to worry because of his age. We know that is what started the violence that led to some of these radical medicine changes. > > > Have they added any new meds that might be causing seizures or are contraindicated with the risperdal? Guest guest
A DPT booster triggered my nephew's autism. Often it's the pertussis portion that causes problems. Have you read " A Shot in the Dark " by Barbara Loe Fisher? Are things at a stage where you can take him off-site for visits (or appts)? You might want to consider NAET treatment for the DPT...to see if it makes a difference.
