Pam,

We have been using both DMSA and ALA for 23 rounds. Hair and urine says lead not

a problem. Wanted to stop the DMSA as well, but just read on this board this

weekend that an adult who stopped using the combo and went to ALA alone had

horrible headaches. Said went she went back to the combo the headaches went

away.

Still might try ALA alone, but not until next time.

My understanding is that using DMSA or DMPS along with ALA can help some people

suppress side effects. Also, some people who find the first day off round

rough, might do

better leaving the ALA out of the last couple doses of the round (DMSA only or

DMPS only).

Using DMSA with ALA speeds chelation, I think Andy says about 30-40%.

Also it seems to modify the side effects of ALA for some. But if

there's no reason you *have to use TD, then oral DMSA is much cheaper.

In my opinion, if you don't have a lead problem, ALA is the most important

chelator.

Try a round with just the ALA, see if it is " just as effective " as

doing both together.

I never used anything other than ALA [and selenium].

For me is just the opposite. ALA alone is just fine. When I add DMSA, even the

smallest dose gives me horrible headaches.

We started with dmsa/ala and did about 27 rounds, we just could not keep her

loaded with zinc, and she didn't look so well. So we tried Ala at the next round

and she was pretty spacey, lacked attention, had a hard time following people's

conversations.

We used td-dmps and oral ala after that until about round 45, then tried Ala by

itself again. This time, there was no problem with the Ala, alone, which we have

been using ever since including this round # 52. So, for us, think it depended

on where you are with the rounds and just how much mercury is still in there.

So, thinking that you could try Ala alone, but be prepared to add back the dmsa

if there are side effects from the Ala. We plan to add the dmsa back on

alternate rounds because as Nell said, you finish a little bit sooner and we so

want to finish.

Dana,

I did do a round with just ALA last weekend. I didn't have enough

DMSA for the entire 3 days so I just skipped the TD-DMSA that

round. I didn't see any difference, just continued progress. No

evidence of headache (he's not verbal enough to describe a headache).

I think I'll keep the TD-DMSA for a few more months since all is

going well. I really should use the oral DMSA to see if that adds

to the progress. I like thinking TD-DMSA isn't as big of a yeast

overgrowth risk, but I'm concerned about absorbtion rates.

Thanks,

Well, great news about no headaches!

If he is not having problems with DMSA, you can keep it until you run

out, then stop using it and see if you notice any changes.
