Guest guest
You can't afford the headaches and stress you're going through. Lock up everything containing gluten and casein at least at night. Do you have a cooler in which you could put non-frozen items and lock them in the car? Consider trying Houston enzymes. They're $20 for a bottle of 90 capsules. They replace the gfcf diet for some people. They would be a lot easier for you than trying to implement the gfcf diet. Start stocking the house with healthy food and don't replace the junk food. When it's gone it's gone. You could also get an alarm for his bedroom door to alert you that he's up and prowling...Some of the money currently spent on junk food could be put aside to pay for the enzymes and a lockable cabinet or gfcf food. Stimming on the newspaper seems rather harmless. If you know he'll look for it anyway, put it somewhere other than the trash, like in a recycle bin where he can easily get to it without making a mess, as it sounds like his going through the trash is the real issue. Guest guest
You can lock the stuff in the trunk of your car, extreme, but works. I agree, not in the house, we found just causes a lot of arguments. Now that she is better, we have let up a little and allow a treat a day and she seems satisfied with that. I think being too restrictive causes some problems also. I like a little treat a day also :-) [ ] I am so mad at my son!! HELP!! Guest guest
Sue, I'm going to go along the same lines the other parents have offered: At the rate is eating, the GFCF diet might SAVE you money! I like the idea of HNI enzymes, too. This might not be the answer, but it is worth a try. Get that junk food out of the house for now. Your other kids will complain, I know, but I think you need to go drastic here. Maybe once a week go out and buy a 'treat' for the kids... only enough for that day instead of stocking up. Can you put the non-perishables in a box under your bed or in your closet? There are locks that can be placed on the refrigerator at night that aren't fancy or expensive (depending on the fridge's handle style). Sounds like you sleep through this behavior? Are you in Jersey? What services are available to a child this age? Perhaps some crisis $$$ for a lock box or small fridge you can put in your garage and lock 24 hours a day? Do you have any type of case manager? Church? Does binge around the clock if you let him? I'm no doctor, but this reminds me of Prader Willi Syndrome. Is over weight because of this binging or slim? Is this a long time problem? You are so stressed. Any big change seems impossible right now, I know. We can't do it for you, just offer suggestions. That stinks. Hang in there and take a serious look at removing the unhealthy stockpile of food for at least a trial run. Guest guest
Sue, I really don't think you're going to have any rest here until you just bite the bullet and do the diet! Once you get substitutes for all his regular food (we order from a food co-op) it's really not a big deal! Sorry to not be more helpful . . . Barb [ ] I am so mad at my son!! Guest guest
Sue, In order to control the searching and additive behaviors surrounding food, we have an old fridge/freezer in the garage where all the offenders are locked away. Even after 5 years some things are just too hard for our daughter to resist[seizures are still her response]. It sounds like all your children would benefit from the diet. It becomes second nature after awhile. B. > > Sue, > > I really don't think you're going to have any rest here until you just bite > the bullet and do the diet! Guest guest
Sue, I agree with Nell on the GF/CF, and maybe he's got a sugar problem also. Unfortunately, starting it isn't the easiest thing. Just try starting gradually. In the meantime, you can get some Tot Loks. They are magnetic cabinet locks that only release with a magnetic " key " by touching the outside of the cabinet. It would take a very determined person of any age to get past them, short of ripping off the cabinet door. They are invisible once installed and just take a screwdriver to install. There's also a small lever you can flip to disable them when they're not needed. Most places that carry child safety stuff will have them. Hope that helps,

Actually I'm not much of a gfcf supporter, it was the junk food I was concerned about. I wholeheartedly second the suggestion to try Houston enzymes instead of gfcf. Also agree with that after they get to a certain age, having NO sweet treats at all gets to be a problem. You can get fruit leather and chocolate bars at Whole Foods with no corn syrup, vanillin, dyes, etc....I hide them in my underwear drawer! Guest guest
Sorry, I only saw the two e-mails I replied to earlier. So I apologize for " double-posting " : Sue said: " Every night this child gets up and binges on everything he can find and open to eat...The more I look at what he eats the more I see the cravings for Gluten and Casein. My personal experience is that if there is mold or mildew in the bedroom or allergens of some sort in the mattress, it is impossible to sleep and then I crave caffeine. When I cannot sleep and I crave caffeine, I start looking for what is causing me to react allergically and the first place I look is the bed and bedding. If it were my child, I would wash all his bedding with something like peroxide or baking soda rather than detergent and use hot water and high heat in the dryer to try to kill everything and see if that improves his night-time behaviors. Not disputing that he may also need a GFCF diet, just giving another point of view. -- Michele in Limbo (formerly in California) talithamichele@... Guest guest
Have you tried hiding the food, or just not buying food that you think is not good for him? Is your son overweight? Is he still growing? Karac eats a lot, but he is still growing. Will your son eat protein? I find that Karac eats less when he has eaten plenty of protein. I know what you mean about that diet. It is a lot of work. When Karac was on Risperdal, it was terrible. He wanted to eat constantly and if you got in his way you might get pinched or bitten!
