Guest guest
I would suggest you look for a " private " (not associated with the schools) speech therapists. Depending on your area a lot of therapists accept Medicaid (or Medi-Cal in your case.) I'm not in CA, but where I have lived the majority of therapists do accept Medicaid. Try calling your Medicaid group and asking for a referral. I believe that Medicaid will cover speech therapy. In fact usually Medicaid does a better job of offering coverage than private insurance companies! When we had Medicaid it covered my son's therapies 100%. Or private insurance only covered about 15 visits of PT/OT/ST combined per year (they had a dollar limit on coverage.) At that time he had 1 hour of OT and 2 hrs of speech each week. The limit didn't go far! Your Medical provider should have a list of providers. You need a therapist called a Speech and Language Pathologist (SLP.) It's hard to answer how many hours your daughter needs in a week, but most here find better success with much more frequent therapist. I was never successful in arguing for more than one hour per week, but I too had Medicaid and we supplemented with private therapy twice a week. Good luck! Guest guest
So you think there is a soultion for therapy, because I heard alot of people says , when you are Low-income that covered by Medi-cal, they cant provide it, and it might deny the therapy only coverage for hard conditions, accident,...ect Really it is very hard cause I dont know, the good IEP goals it depends on the number of Goals , means if there are more goals they canprovide speech therapy. Also our school, divided the classes for 3 types, one of them called special education class: all kids with disabilities , special teacher second class collabritve class: & disability and 8 Typically development with Special teacher Third KidZone class : all class normal, and 4 only with disability in soical manners, General teacher Actually , Iam very frustred , I dont know which class is suitable for her, as The school said she will ok with kidzone as the problem before is the Ear Tubes Surgery, but Now she is Diagonised with Apraxia. What is your help fo that situation. > Hi, > > Ia new in the group, I have only one daughter with Apraxia, she is 4 years > almost, She had done an ear surgery because she cant hear normal cause of a > lot of infections, ear tubes placed in both ears, Actually it is hard time > with the district, as now the school gave her only one hour a week > individuel, How many hours she needs in week? > > Can she speak normal after speech therapy, also I have a little conceren > about my insurance company, Iam covered by Medi-cal, Is there any hope that > our Medi-cal can provide speech for my daughter. > > Also , Can anyone help me where I can found centers or places, I can help > her. > > Thank you > > >
Guest guest
If your daughters speech needs are due to hearing loss, that is different than an Apraxia diagnosis, which is a Neurological condition. Do you have an Apraxia diagnosis from a doctor? If so, make sure the school district knows about that. The following is from my school district SLP. She was commenting on another moms issues- but it may help you to hear what she said. My Apraxia daughter receives 4x week Individual in school since K. If your daughter is only 4- you are still in the CPSE program. But the services are still out there as long as you have the diagnosis and let them do their own evaluations too. Good luck. If you get services in school- accessing private therapy may not be necessary right now. Here is what she said: I think it's really important for this Mom to do some research on her state's regulations for preschool special ed services. NY state has a minimum requirement for speech of 2 times a week/ 30 minutes. She really needs to educate herself on her state's regulations and that is why an advocate may be helpful. I have never heard of putting a minimum amount of services on the IEP. it is usually a stated amount on the document that the school has to adhere to in meeting the child's educational needs. Next, the amount of therapy given to a student develops through the evaluation process. A professional ( i.e licensed SLP) will evaluate the child and determine if the child's speech-language needs are at age-appropriate levels. Dependent on the amount of delay of deficit the child would be recommended for speech and goals would be developed for the IEP through weaknesses noted during the evaluation process. What evaluations were done on the child to qualify him for speech?. Does he have a diagnosis of apraxia? Typically, kids with apraxia benefit from short frequent sessions. If the child was deemed eligible for speech, then the weaknesses identified during the evaluation process should be written as targeted goals on the IEP. In NY state, if you are deemed eligible for a service such as speech, it is up to the school district to find you a provider whether it be within the public school system or through an outside agency. Is it possible that they don't have enough speech therapists at the school to provide services to all of the kids. This may be possible as there is a shortage of speech therapists in many areas of the country. They would then need to contract with an outside agency to provide the services stated on the IEP. Language goals can often be met within a classroom setting through a push-in model. Most articulation deficits cannot be met by pushing into a classroom. I dont have the test scores in front of me but from a developmental standpoint these sounds typically emerge on the earlier side rather then much later developmentally. Again if the child goes to 1:1 individual then that change would mean changing the IEP. The IEP is a legal document so it is important to get as much as possible in the IEP that you want and not have things such s frequency of therapy left as vague. > > Hi, > > Ia new in the group, I have only one daughter with Apraxia, she is 4 years almost, She had done an ear surgery because she cant hear normal cause of a lot of infections, ear tubes placed in both ears, Actually it is hard time with the district, as now the school gave her only one hour a week individuel, How many hours she needs in week? > >>
Guest guest
You can get some resources from your local County Hospital for services that your daughter may need. If they don't provide them on an out-patient basis, they can give you referrals to providers who accept Medi-cal... HTH, monique
