Dana,

I believe that casien removal was an enormous benefit BUT... I have heard from

various specialists that I trust that organic Goats products are okay. The

casien is different, apparently. Of course, the taste of goat simply grosses us

out!

This is what I do: I bought some kefir grains from The Happy Herbalist and am

now in the Kefir making business! I think the site is happyherbalist.com I

make up my morning health shake of ALL the healthy stuff: Newly added is the

Berry Greens, Kefir (made with coconut water..... I am now experimenting making

it with juice which seems to be working well), powdered vitamin C (to combat

that chronic constipation), frozen berries, a little juice and honey to taste.

I blend it up and serve with the daily supplements.

Note that with the kefir, you need to use very small amounts in the beginning

since it will cause a tummy ache. Go slow and work up.

I started initially with the probiotics and really attribute my child's healing

to this magical stuff. It is no good getting it at your local nutrition store

as they simply don't carry the probiotics which have therapeutic doses. In

addition, if it's not in the refridgerator, it is garbage and don't even look at

it. I currently use VSL #3 probiotics which is a super-strength probiotic with

250 billion live bacteria specifically designed for people with colitis & IBS.

I ordered it from Spectrum supplements (www.spectrumsupplements.com) and use the

capsule form (not the powered). This stuff is pricey! (Isn't everything?) It

was recommended on a Autism Audio Lecture from Great Plains Lab. Note that this

probiotic has small amounts of casien in it but apparently Kirkman Labs also has

a high quality probiotic with no casien. We haven't had any issues with the

casien in this product and Mark has been able to handle it.

The next thing that I'm going to try is fermented foods.... when I get the time!

I am a real crazy woman these days and just have too many things on my 'to-do

list' to be fermenting in the kitchen just yet. BUT, apparently fermented foods

work wonders on our childrens' tummies.

The Enviro doc said something that made sense to me. He said for a baby to be

so allergic to milk in this fashion so young is indicative of a deeper problem

inside the system. We need to find out what that deeper problem is and get to

the root of it. But, we start with healing the tummy which is where the milk

has done damage....

In addition to all of this, I ensure that Mark takes a digestive enzyme with

everything that he eats (almost). I let really, really small snacks go. We

have recently added back gluten to our diet (2nd try) and he 'seems' to be able

to tolerate it now with the use of the enzymes from Huston Nutraceuticals (love

the stuff). There have been no constipation issues or tummy aches etc. I be

sure to only test him when he is at home. At school this week, I kept him GFCF.

I am just experimenting with this at this time and will reverse my opinion if I

see ANY regression.

So.... essential items for our milk intolerant babies as I see it are: kefir

drink (work up slowly), a high quality probiotic, high quality digestive enzymes

taken with all food.

You all remember 2 months ago when I was ripping my hair out over Marks bowel

issues; this combo seems to have done the trick.... for now.

Next item that I am working on is: (Ta DAAAA) GAS! and acid-reflux! The kid

is currently a farting/burping machine. (oh, will it never end)!

[sPAM] [ ] Question for Janice

Janice,

Thank you for all you have shared about what has helped your son. I really

feel the speech apraxia and dyspraxia are holding my two boys back more than the

autism at this point. We have been SCD for over a year now. I know that they are

allergic to cow dairy but have continued to give them goat milk yogurt (that is

the only dairy they receive) to get some good probiotics in them. You have

mentioned that you guys are completely casein free and that has been a help in

the health of your son's ears. Do you think it would be in our benefit to just

go completely off of all dairy including the goat yogurt? What do you give your

son for probiotics?

I enjoy reading your posts and really appreciate all that you have to share

regarding the listening program and working so hard to keep your son's ears

healthy.

Thanks,

Dana

and Garrett, 3 years old as of Mar 24
