Carolyn .... what a great story.... I know my sense of humor has helped

immensely

in keeping me alive... I was given 6mos to live in 1994... but I kept a

positive attitude, my sense of humor (which sometimes gets me in

trouble) and a faith that all would be just as it was supposed to be and

that it`s all right however it turns out.

As far as I know I`m the only Jerry in this group....

Jerry,

Too many "Jerrys." How am I ever gonna keep y'all straight? I just sent you a joke. It's clean but cute.

There is a blessing in a smile, years ago when I had cancer and the doctors said I wouldn't live six months if I didn't let them take it out, I was contemplating the problem when I went downstairs to the gift shop to buy me some flowers. I found a little girl down there without any hair but she had the biggest, most beautiful smile. I ask her mother what was wrong with her and she said the little girl has leukemia. But that her hair would grow back and she was going to be o.k. I turned around and went back up and told the doctors and nurses to get those papers in there for me to sign and start the surgery. After Chemo and Radiation and losing my hair, I've been cancer free since 1982! And I'm here because of a simple smile.

Have a great day!...Carolyn...Keep smiling. You never know who's life you will touch with a simple smile.

Jerry,

You are who I thought you were. Somehow I misread or something and

thought " Gerald " was also Jerry. Oh well now I am confused. Don't take

much, at 53 you have to be confused about something! At least if I'm

" confused " with you, you'll overlook it. And besides it " s late...I gotta go

to bed. I gotta get up in the morning and go get my mother's car out of the

shop. My husband burned it up a month after mother died. He didn't check

the water. The night she died, he burned up my pickup truck the same way.

Two vehicles in the same month! That must be some kind of record. And he's

not a race car driver either! You expect it of them...Later...Carolyn...Keep

K... live in Akron , Ohio..USA

aloe vera is well known in the states. I know it mainly as used in

skincreams and ointments....for mosturizing and balms. I use a little

aloe creme in my hair from time to time.. I`m almost 58 and still have a

full head of darkrown hair...but I`m pretty sure that`s due to genes

passed on to me from my mother`s side.

hello all!! just wanted to share a simple home remedy with all of u...it

wont harm u in any way......but will sure make u feel alot better!

if u hv access to an aloe vera plant....u take one of the leaves....and u

slit it and then scrape off the gel from the inside! u add abt half a cup of

water and a drop of lemon juice for taste and try and drink it abt 3 times a

day!!! it may be a bit lumpy to swallow cos sum of the aloe may come off in

lumps but that doesnt matter!!!

let me know how it goes!!

Karishma.

Slept with the windows open last night, as usual every night throughout the

year except when it's too windy. California's not all bad. My husband was

supposed to have had a connecting flight through Chicago last night -- he

cancelled his trip. Otherwise he would have spent the night sitting up in

the airport, due to all the storms and flight cancellations.

Jerry....Hi I am a little backed up on my e-mail. I had a bad week end with

vertigo, had to go to the walk in clinic and have a shot.......To answer your

question about the hep. not wanting Jodi to have a flu shot is he said he

didn't want her to have any live virus vaccine. That's all I know because we

made sure and asked him twice. Genny

Genny I know for a fact that the flu shot ismade of dead virus and as I

posted here many times the transplant team , its Hep. my gastro. and my

famiy doctor thought it very important to get one as I and ALL

immunosupressed people are at much greater risk than the general public.

WE are classified with the elderly and small children as priority when

it comes to getting one. I cetainly wouldn`t want to second guess your

Hep. but I don`t think The Cleveland Clinic , my board certified

gastroentrologist and family doctor of twenty years are wrong and would

risk my life or even the couple of million dollars invested in my liver

and keeping me aiive

for the last 6 years by injecting my with something harmful....i`ve been

on immunos for over 5 yrs, and have been reminded to get my flu shot

evry year by both letter and phone by the trans. co-ordinator and face

to face by my gastro. There has to be some kind of misunderstanding .

You could check on flu shots on the net and find they are DEAD virus....

Oh welll....

It`s probably a littler thing than I am making it out to be....

Thanks Andi ..it WAS very interesting... I could really identify with

much of it..... however my recovery was very easy nothing like what this

poor fellow went through.... I remember the extreme thirstyness upon

coming to...but I was only in ICU about 12-18 hrs. I was up and walking

within a day.... my whole operation lasted less than 8 hrs (or so my

exwife, who was there said) and the only difficulties I know of was they

had to take me back down to tie off a " bleeder " I really suffered little

post-op pain, mostly discomfort I hafd some " mean " moments early when I

was on high doses of IV`d prograf and prednisone but the doses were

lowered quickly enough and I evened out. I note he too had " survivor`s

guilt " which I ha been told was very common....readsing his story

brought back a lot of familiar memories " end stage " and the subsequent

transplant. A lot of the things he and they experienced and did I had

forgotten. By the time (Oct. 19. 1995)

I was transplanted CCF had been performing liver transplants for 11 yrs.

and my surgeon.. Dr. was and is recognized as one the best in

his field as is the hospital and staff.... I`ve been very blessed. I

wish I could recall with such clarity my experiences, they come back in

small increments when prodded . I was a very sick puppy before

transplant....thanks very much for this page... I would answer any

questions you might have concerning my ESLD- as he calls it- and my

transplant and recovery that I can recall.... thanks again

jerry

I don't know Jerry but to make sure we asked him two times about the flu shot

and he said no, he did not want her to have one. Will ask the team when we

get to Miami just to be on the safe side. Thanks for caring. Genny

Jerry, your silly remark yesterday seemed uncharacteristic of the person I've heard from lately. I'm NOT being sarcastic -- I wonder if your labs might be a little off this week. Those of us with liver problems have to deal with a lot of weird chemistry -- when just being a human is puzzling enough.

Take good care of yourself.

Jerry, I do have a liver doctor. Its just when I came out of the

coma, he sent me to a family doctor, who had no clue about me.

The doc. said I was fine and sent me home.

It wasnt untill last November, I requested my medical papers and

since then I have been reading all about the liver.

Its hit home for the first time in 6 years. And Im scared to death.

If I have to, I will get a transplant. This whole thing is just

making me sick. Also Jerry, I dont need a drink, and yes, i did it

on my own. It wasnt just alcohol, I drank as much as everyone else, i

just took Tylenol 8 times a day on an empty stomach. He calls it

alcohol disease, but I was on tylenol pretty hard for 6 months. ( my

wisdom teeth were coming in ). I made an appointment for Feb 20,

thats the earlist, and I will be asking him all the questions from

then on. So Im sorry if ive bothered you, but cant you understand it

just sank in, Im terrified.

CONGRATULATIONS JERRY: Glad to hear things are going fairly well with you.

I hope to go to Miami Feb. 7 to start some more testing. I don't know if

Jodi is having a lot of " brain fog " or if she just misunderstood but I talked

to the transplant coordinator and he says I have about six more trips to

Miami before we will know if I am to be Jodi's donor. The test will be done

two at a time because if there is something wrong with the first two then

they won't continue with the others. Please pray that all will go well and I

will be able to help my daughter..........Jerry don't spoil that baby to

much. LOL Take care and God bless, Genny

Audrey, I have no experience at all with lactulose. However, from reading Jerry's lactulose information page, I wonder if you should be drinking a lot of extra water when you take lactulose. Insufficient water just might explain why you have a different reaction from the usual "purging" lactulose seems to cause. Just a thought.

Audrey.. why are you scripted Aciphex.... GERD? Maybe the fact that it

reduces the acidity in your stomach conteracts the lactulose which is

supposed to set up an acidic condition in your intestines which causes

the lactulose`s laxitive effect. In fact lactulose is made for

constipation and I not sure it has FDA approval as treatment for liver

encepho. although it`s been so used for years. I`ve known a number of

lactulose users and you are the first I`ve heard that it doesn`t work

and work good. Did you show signs of portal-systemic encephalopathy and

how bad/ Have you got any other advanced cirrhosis complications? I see

you take aldactone so you must have some acites and beta-blockers

indicate possible varices. Are you being considered yet as a transplant

or are the symptoms abating?\

By the time I was put on lactulose I was in bad shape..couldn`t remember

my address, couldn`t write or tie my shoes, stumbled when I

walked, slurred my speech and talked nonsense, was delusional (i insisted

that our furnace room was the bathroom and kept trying to pee there). I

was hospitalized for a week, strapped to my bed the 1st nite so I

couldn`t get up and possibly harm myself... I didn`t know where I was. I

entered a state of " semi " coma.

I started to come around they day after I received my first

lactulose...IV`d

After a while I was off and running so to speak . I had to hit the

bathroom almost right after every time I took the stuff. Right now I can

taste that sweet syrup...yyuck. Sorry to ramble. I`d be interested in

hearing your story if you wish to share. Take care of yourself. My

prayers are with you as with all of this group.

Jerry

Jerry, You've been discussing lactulose and I've been taking it since

my first diagnosis 10-99 with Autoimmune Cirrhosis. I have never had

diahrea from it, just the opposite. I know it is supposed to cause it,

but not with me. I asked my hep about that and he just increased the

amount that I take. I take the whole gammet of meds, prednisone,

azathioprine, aciphex, spiralactone, blood pressure med, etc.

I mainly just read the posts, I have gained a lot of info since l0-99.

I just wanted your input or anyone else that has experience with

lactulose.

Thanks,

Audrey from Pa.

autoimmune cirrhosis and forgot to save them . I`ll look again and send

God Bless,

Audrey from Pa.

I can't remember the statistics I've read on how often AIH reoccurs (or sometimes occurs for the first time) following a transplant, but it does happen.

Back in September, I found one medically sponsored website that said AIH recurrence after a transplant had never been known to occur, and the next, equally reputable, website I opened was about frequency of occurence! That was when I began to realize I cannot "trust" any doctor to be right; there is so much conflicting information that even a well trained, well intentioned doctor might be mistaken. I need to learn all I can myself and compare it with my doctor's statements, looking for discrepancies.
