I have a 2 1/2 year old son just diagnosed with autism. He is going

on a completely gluten, casein free diet for 6 weeks to get everything

out of his system, then beginning SCD. He has IgA deficiency & I

prefer to only use SCD, but his specialist says to make sure it's not

a milk allergy first. He prefers SCD, too, I think, because he gave

me pecanbread as a website for reference. I ordered Breaking the

Vicious Cycle yesterday (2 hours after his official diagnosis), but

need a little more help. What improvements should I look for? How

hard is it to stick with? Are there some " fun " foods to make his

transition easier? We're beginning the 1st of February, but I'm doing

all of my research ahead of time, so I can be completely consistent.

I have a lot of hope in this helping. Even a small improvement would

be a blessing!

Welcome to the group.

I think that going GFCF first is not a good idea. It will introduce

foods that your child will not be allowed to have on SCD. I think a

transition to a dairy free version of SCD would be much better.

GFCF is comprised of so many starches that are just not allowed on SCD

and many of the parents can tell you that their children were truly

addicted to starch before starting SCD.

If you go to www.pecanbread.com, you will find information on how to

start dairy-free SCD. In a month or two (or more), you can try

introducing a small amount of goat or cow dairy and see if your child

tolerates it.

We make lots of " fun " foods: cookies, cake, muffins, ice cream, fruit

leathers, etc.

But again, I would really caution you against switching to the GF

starches for 6 weeks then trying to remove them. I think a slow

transition to SCD would be better.

I think you'll find LOTS of fun foods on SCD. Check into banana pancakes

and peanut butter brownies as being a couple of the easiest. You'll find

lots more in the book and on the website.

Best wishes,
