Hi Libby!

we haven't been tested for fish yet (they'll do more testing when she turns 3) but were told to stay away from fish, especially shell fish because of the likely hood of an allergy. I just avoid it for her, which isn't hard cause we are "fish" people anyways, lol.

....now this is one of those friend of a friend type things so take this with a grain of salt -

but a girl once told me that her friend with fish allergies couldn't eat any fried foods from Mcs (fries, etc...) because they sometimes fried them in the same oil as the fillet fish sandwiches.

Like I said this isn't first hand info, and I'm not trying to start a witch hunt, lol. Any one eles know anything about this?? personally, my Bubby devours Mcs fries, lol.

Oh Libby,

I am so sorry that he tested positive for fish. More for you to avoid. has not been tested for fish. I guess he should. We keep him away from it anyway because you never know. I don't know anything about the fish allergy, but lol, I will do some research on it. hehe.

Hi girls,I took Jack for a 3 months follow up today at the allergists and have been floored to find out that he is also 'anaphylactic' to fish...salmon, cod and shrimp. I was expecting perhaps a little variety in the nut categories but it has really hit me hard that I now have to avoid a whole new group.Any of you out there have fish on your lists? Any ideas? Hi!

Dr. ph Mercola recommends that no one consume fish unless they

know for a fact that it is from the Alaskan waters. He says these are

the only waters left in the world that are not polluted, and fish from

other waters contain unsafe levels of mercury.

Aside from Dr. Mercola, pregnant women are now told to not consume any

fish (canned or otherwise) during their pregnancy for this same reason.

You have to make your own decision, but we do not consume fish any

longer in our family. We do, however, use Nordic Naturals Cod Liver

Oil as a supplement for the necessary omega-3 fatty acids as well as

the Vitamin A and D (since we are dairy free). This cod liver oil is

third party tested for safety. And the vitamin A in the cod liver oil

comes in a form (palmitate, I believe) that can be absorbed by my

kids. Many kids that are ASD are not able to absorb vitamin A in the

other form which comes in vegetables like carrots, etc. For example,

my infant shows levels of plenty beta carotene in her blood. However,

her body does not convert that beta carotene to vitamin A. As a

result, she has dangerously low levels of vitamin A. The cod liver

oil provides the vitamin A in direct form and she is able to absorb it

that way.

You are correct! I got my vitamin forms backwards. I just checked

Dr. Megson's website with her research paper postings. Vitamin

palmitate is the form that my kids cannot absorb. They need the kind

in cod liver oil which is the natural, unsaturated cis form. Good

eye! Thanks for helping get it straight.

As far as the fish thing goes. I was stating Dr. ph Mercola's

findings (which I trust). In his book, Dr. Mercola's Total Health

Program he writes: " Sadly in the last 50 years, the oceans and lakes

have become polluted with hundreds of millions of tons of mercury

primarily from burning coal for electricity. . . . many health

experts, myself included, are now warning against any type of fish,

as nearly all have toxic levels of mercury . . . . Fish consumption

is particularly hazardous to pregnant women and children as the

mercury can cause birth defects and harm the sensitive physiology of

children. " He also states: " My best advice in descending order is: 1)

avoid eating any fish unless you know it has been laboratory-tested

and proven to be free from mercury and other toxins. 2) If you do eat

fish that you are not sure has been laboratory-tested and proven to

be free of toxins, at least choose from among the following six

safest fish:* wild pacific salmon* tilapia* croaker* sardines*

haddock* summer flounder. 3) Eat fish sustainably harvested from the

wild (such as the toxin-free Vital Choice salmon . . .), not " farm

raised. "

Again, this is Dr. Mercola's standpoint. Everyone has to make their

own decisions about what they feel comfortable with. Anyway, this is

I think we all need to be careful about fish, BUT, let's not forget, as far

as Dr. Mercola goes- He has vested interested in selling vital choice

salmon, of course he is going to tell you not to eat any other fish- buying

other fish doesn't make him money.

I personally eat a lot of fish, but I am very careful with what kind I buy

and the quality

I think we all need to be careful about fish, BUT, let's not forget, as far

as Dr. Mercola goes- He has vested interested in selling vital choice

salmon, of course he is going to tell you not to eat any other fish- buying

other fish doesn't make him money.

I personally eat a lot of fish, but I am very careful with what kind I buy

I understand that Dr. Mercola did not develop SCD, but interestingly enough much

of what he says lines up with SCD. His book is not geared for people with

intestinal issues; however, what he recommends for the " average " person is not

far off from what Elaine suggests we do (such as removing grains, corn, soy,

etc. from the diet).

My point in providing the information was to help someone out with a mercury /

fish question. Elaine does not address this in SCD, so are we not to

investigate answers to any questions that Elaine didn't personally address?

I saw no harm in providing this information to a person who is trying to find

answers. It doesn't conflict with SCD in any way and may, in fact, end up

helping this woman's child.

Where do you buy your fish? How did you go about investigating the quality of

it? I have never bought Vital Choice (and I don't intend to) because it

probably costs more than I am willing to pay. If I could find good, quality

fish sold locally, though, I would be very interested in adding it to my

family's menu.

Once, I asked around at the local fish market, Walmart fish market, etc. about

their fish source. They had no idea where the fish came from or anything like

that. I gave up after that and went fish-free.

Can you give me some pointers on " fish investigation " ?

Where do you live, do you have a health food store anywhere around you? I

wouldn't trust Walmart fish to feed to my dogs- Most hfs should know the

source and have mercury data and listings

I live in Staunton, VA. We have a Whole Foods market about 40 min. away. There

is a 's that just opened up about 20 minutes away. I'll start to look

into it.
