Hi Di,

I had radiation treatmens when I was probably around 12,13. It was in

connection with my hearing. If I remember correctly they were trying to

shrink my adnoids. They ran a wire about the size of a metal coat hanger up

my nose and down my throat. Taped it and left me closed up, all alone in a

room for awhile. On the end of the wire was an enlarged area like some one

had stuck a wad of gum on the end. Didn't help my hearing but who knows

what it did to my nervous system. A few years back I read that Hopkins was

conducting tests on people who had had these treatments due to the large

number of patients that were experiencing neurological problems. It was for

land residents only so although my tratments were done in MD and I'm

only two hours from Baltimore I couldn't get in the study. And I've never

heard any more about it.

Hi Di!

About that time of life, most young ladies also develop another " condition. "

Could this also have contributed to your problems with coordination and

muscle cramps?

This is more than just a flippant response and question. I wonder if you

maybe had problems with entering puberty, mostly physically. My wife had

terrible cramps, in her muscles also, apparently. I didn't know her then and

can only give you second hand what she has told me.

I wouldn't rule out your initial question, however. Check with your neuro

and get an opinion. Actually, maybe your PCP would be a better choice.

I guess that is why I am cautious about new treatments now.....one

wonders if...in 10 years...they will find out it is harmful. One

thing in common....both our procedures were on the head area.....I

know I used to get a rash and throw up after the radiation. I think

my parents should have told me I had skin cancer at age 5......but I

guess they had good intentions. But i did read later that the doses

then were WAY too high.

Thanks for your comments!

Actually Mike...i DID have horrendous cramps at puberty...and I

became very 'accident prone'. But the accident prone part started

when i was about 6 or 7. yes...i think I will talk to my PCP about

it....just out of interest.

Take care Mike

Hi ya Di,

Are you positive that you had skin cancer? I ask, because I live in

the skin cancer capital of the world and know all about it and have

never heard of any child being treated for skin cancer. If a child

did have skin cancer, it would make front page news. The earliest I

have read about a child having this condition is in their teens.

Am sure this came up a while back on here and a surprising number of

people on here had had something similar. When I was about five I had a

couple of visits to a nose/ear/throat specialist and had some treatment

where long wires were passed up my nose. I don't know what was on the

end of them, but there was definitely something. Quite possibly like

Ronnie had they were also trying to shrink my adenoids as not long after

that I had them removed, although my memories (almost 50 years ago) are

that they ended up in my sinus cavities (felt like they ended up under

my eyes) rather than in my throat as Ronnie said hers did.

Well...according to my family I did....this was 1962...in England,

on a Canadian Armed Forces Base. At ant rate....I did have the

cobalt radiation treatment.I remember them painting the orange stuff

on my cheek,.....then moving this long metal 'tube', cylinder, over

it. I often threw up after. My Mum talked about the colbalt

radiation treatments for years after.

So..................who knows

hugs!

Hello Di:

At my job in 1992 I think was the year we accidently

melted down a radiation source in the scrap metal and ran it through

the caster where I was working and we had to shut the melt shop down

and notify the governmental authorities as to what had happened. And

in short it cost over 20 million dollars to clean it up.The goverment

came out and tested us for radiation exposer and told us that we get

more from the sun each day than we got from that.

All the dust in the building and the dust from the bag house were

put in roll off truck containers and staged outside and tarped good

were not to get water inside (around 200 or more of them)they were

taped off with yellow tape that said radioactive waste stay clear. All

of this was done by these government contractors and this stuff sat

away from the main building and it was almost two years before they

got rid of all of it taking it to radioactive dump sites. They did a

good job cleaning it up.

I do remember going outside at nite and seeing bright flashes of

light in the sky when I was working at nite while that stuff was

there but my co workers said I was crazy because they didn't see it.

So many years between 1992 and the time I got this in 2003 I just

didn't feel like this had any thing to do with it but who knows.

Yall have a Good Day

and God Bless all

Ronnie, I had that done also. I was about 7 or 8 and it was for my hearing but

don't if it was to shrink adnoids or not. I just remember how awful it was and,

seems a very strange things to have had done. I had it done in Ohio and have

never heard of anyone else having had it done. Susieq
