Re: I have a very important question

After I got out of the hospital, I think I had about 8 or 10 pills to take

every day and just had to take them one at a time so that they would go

down, especially the larger ones. I had several that we really small and I

could usually take a couple of them with no real problems.

Just take your tie when you are taking them and you should be just fine.

I have a very important question

Hi Everyone,

Right now I'm on 15 (I think) medications. How do you take your

medications after surgery? I have pills that can't be cut out of the

equation.

Especially the first few days after surgery? What do I do?

I can't be the only one here that has had this dilemma.

Please respond.

Love,

Cathy

12? Good Lord! I don't even have 12 of things I like!

A pill crusher, natural unsweetened apple sauce and splenda mixed

together is how I took the four I was taking post-op. It worked great

and was bearable. I say bearable because I figured out the most

expensive, smallest, bi-polar one, called Abilify, was terribly bitter.

It basically messed up the mix so much that it was nasty sour to eat so

I just chowed down quickly. Don't worry I could mix it into a couple

spoon fulls of sauce easily.

I did not take doses for a few days though. Those days were the day of

surgery, day after and day after that. Now doing that with

bloodpressure meds really isn't a big deal. You might feel a little

uncomfortable but should be alright. Bipolar medicine can be a

different story. I explained to my physician that if his staff could

stand me being manic or an ass then I and my family could handle it for

a few days. All was good. Oh DO definetly talk to all doctors who

prescribed your stuff to see if 3 or more days off will potentially

harm you.

Anyway, the three days off meds was no biggy. It turns out being bombed

from surgery and all the heavy drugs left in for that period pretty

much counter acted anything I may have been feeling otherwise.

I did not mention that is what I did before I left the hospital. I did not

have any of my meds while in the hospital even though they had a list of

everything I was on, but they took my blood sugar and gave me insulin when I

needed it instead of my oral medicine.

I am so glad that I had the surgery and now that the ulcer has basically

healed, I can get back to the way I was doing things instead of having to

eat every two hours because I really think that messed up my weight loss.

Cathy I do not have a good answer for you. the only meds I still

took/take after surgery were not too big. I know Mike in GR has no

problem taking " horse " pills, but others may have some advice for you.

Cathy I do feel for you. Besides the vitamines, iron and calcium

required after surgery I had 5 other medications that I needed. All

I can suggest is spacing them out during the day. I don't know

about anyone else, but I had difficulty swallowing pills after my

surgery. I would cut the bigger ones in half to make for easier

swalling. I can take them now with no prob. Hope someone has a

better suggestion for you.

Before surgery I took 13 different pills. My instructions for coming home from

the hospital included continuing my thyroid pill (small tablet) and nothing else

but vitamins and supplements.

I used the children chewables for the first 2 months and when I ran out of them,

I'm finishing up the vitamins I took before the surgery. I cut the vitamin pill

in half and they go down nicely. The calcium citrate pill I bought from the

surgeons office is a chewable and it gags me. I bought some cacium citrate

pills from Sam's. They are big so I cut them in half. The biotin (tablet) and

flaxseed (gel) I take go down OK. The B complex is sublingal and iron is

chewable.

I thought my last labs showed several areas low. The doctor's office didn't

think they were low - I did. So I have increased my vitamins in those areas.

My next blood test will be week of 12 Dec. I'm looking for better readings in

those areas.

I think these are too low and need to come up. What do you think?

Calcium 8.9 range 8.6 - 10.3

Protein 6.5 range 6.1 - 7.9

Iron 50 range 38-160

Average daily glucose 5.1 range 4.3 - 5.7 or 93 for those used to seeing

glucose rated in straight numbers

Hi Cathy,

I was on 6 meds when I went in the hospital. I came home on one. I no longer

have to take Blood Pressure Meds, Diabetes meds, IRB meds, Gerd meds. The only

med I take is a disolvable tablet for a small ulcer the doc found when she

scoped me before surgery. I was told that I would not be able to take tablets

anymore. If I need something I am to take liquids.

I'm sure every surgeon is different, but I'm not allowed to take whole

pills for 2 months after surgery. Everything has to be chewable,

crushed, etc. Luckily, except for my vitamins, I only have 2 meds. I'm

sure I can easily do without my glucophage since my blood sugar is not

an issue. I'm also taking Wellbutrin, but I can't tell it does

anything other than being somewhat of an appetite suppresant and I

sure won't need that.

Hi Sue, Your labs are absolutely perfect, the numbers are all within

range. The reference ranges that are given are a gage for the doctor

and you are in the lower end of the normal range which is perfect.

Keep doing what you are doing. I wouldn't increase anything without

the doctor's approval, you could then be getting too much, and you

don't want that to happen. Take Care, in CA
