Guest guest
Can anyone direct me to where I could find some articles on how and why are kids do this? I want to prepare an informational packet for the police station so that they know I am not a bad mom. I really really can't handle it when people assume that I just don't watch her. I am going down to the police station this week to talk to the person in charge and I am going to tell them how it is. I am so afraid that if I cannot prove that I can keep her safe....ie. in the house or under direct supervision at all times....that they are going to try to take her away. I know that nobody in a private home can do any better than I can and they are not going to put her into a hospital or institution. I need to do something. I just don't know what to do or how to do it. Please help. Tamara _________________________________________________________________ Add photos to your e-mail with MSN 8. Guest guest
Hi Tamara, I'm glad Ebony was found quickly and safe..and don't let anyone, especially someone who doesn't have a clue about what it's like parenting our kids, make you feel you are anything less than the amazing mom that you are. I think you should definately go down to the police station and enlighten them. When got out of the yard two summers ago..and I told the 911 operator..*he's autistic, he's non-verbal*..she called me back a couple seconds later and said *what did you say..he's Caucasian*. I tried to explain that while, yes he is Caucasian, what I'd said was that he was autistic..*..I know she still was clueless when I finished. I want to prepare an informational packet for the police > station so that they know I am not a bad mom. > Tamara, The short answer is that kids with severe sensory processing dysfunction run/climb/engage in other unsafe motor activities because they are not getting correct sensory feedback from their bodies or their environment, and need to experience that environment in order to understand it. They run through the space in front of them so they can determine the parameters of it. They often crave the vestibular (gravity and balance sense) and proprioceptive (muscle and joint sense) information that climbing and running provide their bodies. Running is not misbehavior, nor is it a play behavior on the part of the child. It is a need. These children often do not understand boundaries. They do not understand danger. Their vestibular systems are not telling their bodies when they are too far off the ground, their visual systems are not telling them when they are too far away from home, their proprioceptive systems are not telling them where their bodies end and the rest of the world begins. They do not stop when called because they cannot understand what they are hearing, especially when focussed on the sensation of running or climbing...many people with autism cannot attend to more than one sensory system at a time, and when a child makes the choice to focus on a particular system, it is very hard to break past that without direct contact with the child to regain their attention. You can quote me in your presentation (as a pediatric physical therapist) if that is helpful...but I am not an expert in anyone's book, so I don't know how helpful that will be. I will look for specific references in my books...but I have to say that I am just recovering from spring break (which is over as of today!!!!), and already owe several posts...
