IT mentions that CMV (congenital cytomegalovirus)is the most common

causes of SNHL in children in the US and is the leading cause of

vision loss and mental retardation.

Most CMV infections are asymptomatic or cause only mild flu-like

symptoms, but when a pregnant woman is infected and passes the

infection to her unborn baby, there can be serious consequences. Each

year it is estimated 40,000 babies are borh with congenital CMV

infection. Causing and estimated 400 deaths and leaving app. 8,000

children with permanent disabilities, the most frequent of which is

SNHL. According to some estimates, 20 - 30 percent of all SNHL is

cause by CMV.

CMV is spread through close contact with body fluids, espcially urine

and saliva. ........

Diagnosis of CMV requires detection of the virus or viral DNA in the

bababy's bodily fluids within 2-3 weeks of birth. Diagnosis is often

missed beacuse infected infants are usually asymptomatic at birth or

have non spacific symptoms, as a result CMV testing may not be done.

Infants are not routinely screended for CMV infection at birth.

Universal screening would detect children at high risk for delayed

hearing loss.

THIS MAKE ME START THINKING......

I have been a preschool teacher off and on for 12 years now. I was

working at a preschool and had been for the last 6 years when my son

was born...umm... another thing to think about huh?

***ALSO, they had an ad for a 'ear dryer'

used to cut down infections, reduce moisture, etc.

Has anyone used this before? I plan to ask our audi about this one.
