I had a bout of scarry high blood pressure about a year after my RAI...

We were still having trouble getting my body to accept synthetic T4...

I'd had a REALLY depressing and frustrating weekend and had chowed down

on Mountain Dew, chocolate and potato chips (don't knock it, they go

REALLY good together!). The little city that I lived in was having a

blood pressure screening for the elderly folks. The street I lived on was

almost all retired folks and I often walked with them when they went to

the store and such cuz of some muggings that had been happening with the

old folks.... So a bunch of them wanted to go have their blood pressure

taken and then asked me to walk along... (I was still doing okay then and

carried a baseball bat when I was escort... never did get to whack anyone

with it though! darn!).

When we go there everyone was visiting and waiting their turn.. the fire

department guys knew me a bit from my being neighborhood watch captain

and said that I could get checked too, even though I was still only in my

thirties.... Came out REALLY bad... so bad that they told me to head

for home, slowly, get in the car and go to the hospital!

Long story short... I got it checked at the clinic.. it was BAD... I was

gabbing with the nurse while waiting for the doc and it came up how I'd

spent my weekend.... (chocolate, pop and chips... mostly the chips) They

suspected that I was reacting to the salt.....

I had to come in a couple of times a week for a month to get checked... I

switched back and forth between salt free and chips... and it turned out

that when I did salt my blood pressure shot up..... I was told to go salt

free..... I did for most of the next 10 years, only doing 'salt licks'

during hot weather.... Don't know if it still affects me or not.. .but

I'm craving salt more now and starting to salt foods again. Keep in mind

I only do processed foods on rare occasions.... all the stuff I eat is

made from scratch, so I still probably consume less salt than a lot of

folks....

How is your salt intake? Do you do a lot of packaged or fast foods.... ?

I wonder if something, along with stress, is making your body react???

Didn't think about that before, with your other post.... Hmmmmm

Hi everybody,

On the subject of salt, I would like to refer you to an excellent interview

with Dr Peat, Nutritionalist :

http://www.thyroid-info.com/articles/ray-peat.htm

in which he says the following :

" The absorbtion and retention of magnesium, sodium, and copper, and the

synthesis of proteins, are usually poor in hypothyroidism. Salt craving is

common in hypothyroidism, nd eating additional sodium tends to raise body

temperatrue, and by decreasing the production of aldosterone, it helps to

minimize the loss of magnesium, which in turn allows cells to respond better

to the thyroid hormone. This is probably why a low sodium diet increses

adrenalin production, and why eating enough sodium lowers adrenalin and

improves sleep. The lowered adrenalin is alos likely to improve intestinal

motility. "

As for high blood pressure, hypos often have it because the heart muscles

are weaker, and the heart has to pump harder to supply enough blood to the

body, and because the blood vessels are less supple (think I've got that

right, but I'm having a hypo moment here ! lol).

I have been having salty foods and packaged food. It is hard for me

to cook from scratch a lot because I get very tired by the end of the

day and I have times when I can not stand for long and I take the

easy route and make prepackaged stuff a lot I hate to say. Also my

grocery funds are none right now so I have been having to eat stuff I

would probably not eat that is in my freezer because the funds are

not there to buy the healthy food right now or any food to tell you

the truth. So I am eating what ever is left like I said in the

freezer and pantry. I love the candy too and salty chips too.

Thanks again

Hi Theresa,

Please read that article that I said in the previous post as you say

that you " love " salt and that is an indicator of an adrenal problem

and you need to learn about what is happening to you. It is way to

long to put into a post.

A meal suggestion when cooking double (or more)the batch and freeze

into meals for later when you really can't do it. Most things can

be frozen taters aren't so good though. I used to do that to save

on time and the expense when my two were teens and always hungry.
