Guest guest
, I'm not sure of the reason that Ian doesn't use his in gym, but I know why doesn't use her's in gym. Yes the acoustics are bad in gym class. It's because of the poor acoustics that the teachers tend to speak using their " loud voice " during most of the class. And that non-stop loud voice for would over stimulate her and cause more problems than it would be worth. So far does well enough in gym and is really good about following along. Of course we also have the added problem of having 78 first graders in the gym class with her, but I'm pretty sure that's exculsive of our crazy district. My son will be getting a personal FM for Kindergarten. >> just got his FM two weeks ago (2nd grade), and he also doesn't use it for gym class. The teacher uses a microphone already for all of her classes because the acoustics in our gym are so bad - it's also handy for getting the kids' attention when they're outside. That combined with an FM would have been overwhelming and defeated the purpose for him. This is the same reason he doesn't use it for music - the sound of all of their instruments being amplified into his good ear would be overload for his brain, and we'd have a very cranky 7 year old on his teacher's hands twice a week. (Our audiologist did say that even if she didn't use the mic, he wouldn't have recommended it's use for gym - but that's also because of the type of unit uses (the EduLink - very itty-bitty, easy to lose receiver) - we would be practically guaranteed to lose it within the first two months!) Just my $.02 - your school audiologist should be able to help you with figuring out what will be best for your son given the structure of his school facility and the teaching style of the people he'll be working with. Guest guest
(1st grade) doesn't use his FM system in Gym, either. This was a decision that was made by his principal and I. We decided that for Gym (not the other specials) the risk of losing or harming the system outweighed the benefit. His gym teachers are wonderfully attentive to his hearing needs. And will make sure his is by their side when they are giving instructions. knows his limitations as well and knows when he needs to pay extra attention. I have been assured that if at any time, they feel would benefit from having his FM in gym, they would go back to using it. But after trialing it on and off, this was the system that seemed to work better. Oh, and we have lost pieces to the system on the playground in the past, which is what led to wondering what was the better course. Guest guest
Maggie never used it in Gym class due to very loud voices and also whistle blowing. She did use it for tennis lessons though. in GA

The PE teacher says she notices a difference when she uses the FM and really likes the FM. Just my 2 cents. All messages posted to this list are private and confidential.
