Guest guest
Is it possible that she could just be responding to a new diet item in general, rather than the wheat in particular? What has her diet consisted of prior to the scary wheat experiment? And does your family have the celiac gene? The scary thing it, because i have the celiac gene twice over I am guaranteed to " share " it with my child, when we have one... I know that i will definitely be nervous about introducting wheat, but isn't celiac usually triggered by some kind of stress she may not have had yet? (I have heard cases where infants seemed to have reactions from birth, but am wondering if this is the exception rather than the rule..) This is all something that I will have to think about in the future, so I'm interested in what you find out as well... I have heard that doctors aren't keen to do much until the age of 2- maybe specifically referring to the biopsy, but perhaps they can do a gene test, and test for antibodies (although these would probably require a lengthy period of gluten consumption). Poor little baby! Best wishes and health to your little one. > > I emailed the list last week about introducing wheat to an infant for the > first time, etc. Well, I started Saturday with ONE teether biscuit. Guest guest
My 10 year old daughter was kept gluten free for the first 2 years of her life per Dr's order. We have a very strong family history of CD. We tried three times, unsuccessfully, to introduce gluten into her diet. Each time she developed diarrhea. my infant is reacting to her first taste of wheat I emailed the list last week about introducing wheat to an infant for the first time, etc. Well, I started Saturday with ONE teether biscuit. Today I gave her one more teether biscuit and about 5 melt in the mouth "cheerio" type things. About 2 hrs later she had diareaha for the first time in about 3 months. Coincidence?? My DH suggested we stop giving her wheat, but I will call the University of MD tomorrow to find out where on their website I can find the list of tests that need to be done (one person on this list couldnt find it either). Her regular pedi can order the tests if I provide the list. I hope I dont have to keep giving her wheat for a few weeks or whatever until her bloodwork can be performed. I dont want her getting sicker.
Guest guest
Thank you everyone for your responses --- Shea has been very lethargic all day and has napped much more than usual. She has been crying a lot and HONESTLY this child NEVER cries. My husband and I decided not to put her through anymore of this until she can at least talk and let us know how she feels (belly ache, etc). Even if its just a simple reaction to her getting a new food in her diet, its breaking our hearts seeing her like this. Thank you to everyone! Guest guest
The problem is that the test have a high false negative rate for children under 2. My daughter had problems as an infant; was blood tested several times with negative results each time. However when we finally got her into a great pediatric GI he said that you couldn't trust blood result for kids under 2 so he did a biopsy and sure enough she was full blown celiac! I just wish I had known earlier, I think of all the things I fed her because that blood test was negative... > > I emailed the list last week about introducing wheat to an infant for the > first time, etc. Well, I started Saturday with ONE teether biscuit. Guest guest
I started reacting to gluten as soon as wheat was added to my diet. I was horribly sick for over a year. Finally I was diagnosed at 16 months of age. I truly believe that a child can have celiac reactions before any " stress " may occur. As for the doctors testing for CD, it is my understanding that before the age of 2 the body doesn't build up enough antibodies to gluten to show in the blood tests. However, there is still damage being done in the intestines that would/may show in a biopsy. But now with the blood tests being used, Drs are apprehensive on doing a biopsy without positive bloodwork. So if a child under the age of 2 is having CD symptoms, and the bloodwork comes back negative, it doesn't mean there isn't damage to the intestines. (Someone please correct me if I'm completely off base) I was diagnosed by biopsy. I have never had any bloodwork related to celiac done. Blood tests weren't an option back when I was diagnosed. One thing you have to your advantage is knowing CD is in the family. I am the only one in my family, immediate & extended, with CD. This hindered my diagnosis. One doctor actually reccomended my mother go see a psychologist! Said it was all in HER head. But a mother knows her child better than any doctor ever will, so she kept searching for the answer. If you feel wheat is the problem, pursue a diagnosis. That may mean feeding her wheat for awhile. But in the end it is for her own good, you would be feeding her gluten to help her out not to hurt her. Plus she is young enough not to remember any of this later in life. ~ in NH > > > > I emailed the list last week about introducing wheat to an infant > for the > > first time, etc. Well, I started Saturday with ONE teether > biscuit. Guest guest
Hi. We stopped giving her gluten on Sunday - she was miserable! Today is Tuesday and she is back to herself. We couldnt bear to put her thru that. We figured we would wait til at least she can talk and then she can tell me if her belly hurts, etc. I understand that doing it now and getting the bloodwork done is beneficial to her not remembering it - but I just cant do it....not to mention my husband is also against it. I went to the pedi today (routine visit) and asked about her giving me an Rx for the gene testing (just to be sure) and she said she would.....that is my next step.
