Guest guest
HI Dee....i made my decision after i took the oncotype test,,,,it gave me a 3-5 percent chance that chemo therapy would help my type of cancer so i opted not to take it...see if you can get this test...i had a lumpectomy and a reincision...im half way thru myradiation and still am up in the air about tamoxifen....hugs to you and take care....you are always in my prayers...kassy > > HI, THIS IS DEE. > THE DOCTOR SAID I HAVE A SMALL CANCER AND JUST NEED A LUMPECTIMY AND I > HAD GONE IN WITH THE EDEA TO HAVE MY BREAST TAKEN OFF. Guest guest
Dee; The doctors tend to treat aggressively...usually the younger you are, the more aggressive the treatment. I had a lumpectomy, followed by a mastectomy and am currently in chemo. I did not have radiation. I will have Herceptin after I finished Taxol (goodie : ) Ask him why he recommends chemo - it may reduce your risk of reoccurrence to make it worthwhile (?) - Jen : ) Age 40, taking Chemo Stage 1c, Grade 3, ER- HER2+ Lumpectomy, SLNB, Mastectomy Diagnosed: 7/2006 (1st Mammo) - Jen : ) Age 40, taking Chemo Stage 1c, Grade 3, ER- HER2+ Lumpectomy, SLNB, Mastectomy Diagnosed: 7/2006 (1st Mammo) On Fri, 10 Nov 2006 02:55:41 -0000 " rockportdee " writes: > HI, THIS IS DEE. > THE DOCTOR SAID I HAVE A SMALL CANCER AND JUST NEED A LUMPECTIMY AND > I > HAD GONE IN WITH THE EDEA TO HAVE MY BREAST TAKEN OFF. Guest guest
Dee, A lot depends on your age. It may give you a better chance of the cancer not returning. If you are not satisfied I would go for a second opinion. I will keep you in my prayers. Guest guest
In the research, I have done, chemo would seem to be of more benifit in estrogen negative women, which is probably why it is being suggested in addition to the radiation. Guest guest
Hi Dee, He probably suggested this to you because BC which are ER/PR neg and HER-2 neg tend to be more aggressive. Also, because there are no other ways except for chemo and radiation to treat it. He is probably being careful and this is very good. I do not know your age, by the younger we are, the more aggressive they like to treat us. Good luck and keep us posted WENT TO THE DOCTOR'S TODAY TO SEE HOW THEY WILL PROCEED HI, THIS IS DEE. Guest guest
I asked my doctor the same thing. It seemed to me if I have chemo, which is supposed to kill all the cancer cells in my body, I wouldn't need radiation, which is local. What he told me was that after the lumpectomy, the lymph system drainage in your breast is messed up, so the chemo might not get to all the spots in your breast that it should. So basically, radiation is an extra insurance policy. > > HI, THIS IS DEE. > THE DOCTOR SAID I HAVE A SMALL CANCER AND JUST NEED A LUMPECTIMY AND I > HAD GONE IN WITH THE EDEA TO HAVE MY BREAST TAKEN OFF. Guest guest
Hi Dee, The radiation is because you are having a lumpectomy not a mastectomy. The chemo treats the cancer cells that may have gotten into your system in other areas. I am Her2nu neg, like you and therefore don't get Herceptin. Also, I'm weakly ER pos - and that's why I take Arimidex. You just have to sort out all the markers and ask tons of questions. It takes a while to understand it all. It was previously thought that Her2nu neg was a good thing, but since they found out that Herceptin works on Her2nu pos patients, those who take it have a much lower precentage of a recurrance. It's confusing for sure. Hope this helps! Ellen > > HI, THIS IS DEE. > THE DOCTOR SAID I HAVE A SMALL CANCER AND JUST NEED A LUMPECTIMY AND I > HAD GONE IN WITH THE EDEA TO HAVE MY BREAST TAKEN OFF. Guest guest
so ann - does being her2+ & er/pr+ cancel each toher out (sort-of asked tongue in cheek...but not really...) Guest guest
Hi Marissa, I think it means you have more options, lucky you :-) It actually may mean less chance of recurrence, but more treatments you have to do to prevent it. Though the more treatments is more definite if you're later stage. Stage 1 is more iffy for what you need to do. Did you take the oncotype dx test? - marisa wrote on 11/10/2006, 2:35 PM: > so ann - does being her2+ & er/pr+ cancel each toher out (sort-of > asked tongue in cheek...but not really...) > > Marisa > stage I, er/pr+ > her2+ > > > > > Being her2+ is considered bad, in terms of having an aggressive > cancer; > > the herceptin just lowers the chance of recurrence to about the same > as > > the generally less aggressive er/pr+ cancer. > > > > - > >
