Everyone thought it was fateful that my final appointment

there would find me essentially at goal!

Congrats . It's great to know someone is at their goal. My surgery is Monday and I'm almost afraid to hope I'll actually make my goal weight.

Thanks for sharing and good luck with the move.

I had my final pre-move appointment with Dr. Rabkin yesterday, and got my

body composition analyzed. According to this nifty device, I am pretty much

at goal right now! My current percent body fat is 23.4%, and the gadget says

that to reach the target of 21% body fat, I only need to lose 5 more pounds.

Is that bizarre or what? LOL. Me? Not having to lose anymore weight?

Unfathomable! Everyone thought it was fateful that my final appointment

there would find me essentially at goal!

To recap, in 17 months, my weight has gone from 299 to 161. My body fat down

from who-knows-how much to 23.4%. Down from a size 3X and 26/28 to a size

M/L and 12. My joint pain, asthma and urinary incontinence are history. My

self-esteem and mobility are better than ever.

Needless to say, Dr. Rabkin got a huge hug from me when I left him

yesterday. How do you repay a man who changed your life so dramatically? He

will have my everlasting gratitude and respect.

Do you still read the Ossg list at all? Someone asked questions about why

someone chose the BPD/DS over RNY and vice versa. I sent the following

response:

I chose the BPD/DS for several reasons:

---I did not want dumping. After all it was not 1 cookie that got me to 267.

---I wanted to practice " no diet " strategies like in Seven Habit of Slim

People, and Breaking Free, and Overcoming Overeating. I felt the possible

restriction of the RNY compared to the BPD/DS were less conducive to

practicing these philosophies

---I had this weird fear of being thirsty and no being able to chug water. I

wanted to be able to chug or take big gulps of water.

---I was worried about ulcers at the stomach to intestine connection.

---I wanted the added calcium and iron absorption possibilities of having a

small part of the duodenum still having the food pass through it.

---The idea of " small " quantities of food was very appealing to me. The idea

of " tiny " quantities of food did not appeal to me.

---I was worried the " tiny " quantities of food could damage my metabolism.

Would all these come true with an RNY? Of course not, but according to the

research they are distinct possibilities.

I have had no problems with the BPD/DS. I can eat fats and they do not

bother me in the bathroom department. I can eat a small meal. I can gulp

about 6 to 8 ounces of water.

The only dietary guideline I go by is " PROTEIN FIRST "

I feel so NON OBESE normal!

Any other questions? Just ask.

****I got some responses that show many over there have no idea what they are

talking about with BPD/DS. One responded that the RNY has a 80% EWL rate and

all other procedure 60%. I had to correct them on that one! They go on and

on about their " tool " also. Not that I don't think weight loss can be

optimized with the BPD/DS by having more of a " tool " attitude, but all that

RNY diet talk makes me crazy!

Dear - I couldn't agree with you more. I am religious about my vits

and also protein. I write down my protein everyday to make sure I hit

between 80 and 100. I taste things but I haven't been doing to many sweets.

I was drinking regular milk because I hate thwe smeel of skim, etc' I was on

a plateau for 1 month but I decided not to drink milk and see if I lose and

it could be coincidental but I beroke my plateau when I did that. I used milk

Thanks, Ellen and everyone. I wrote this privately to someone, but I think

it bears repeating to the list:

You will succeed! Believe me, there's no secret for me. I have literally

eaten anything and everything, whenever and however much I wanted. (Keeping

in mind if course that how much and what I want has changed a little bit

from pre-op.) This surgery has done 90% of the work for me.

My big contribution to the whole deal, and the one that I am actually most

proud of, is that I have been religious about taking my required vitamins

every single day, without fail. The surgery can take and keep the weight

off, but I am solely responsible for doing the most important part in

keeping myself healthy over the LONG term.

I'm on my soapbox for a second just to say once again how important this is!

Being cavalier or careless about the vitamin requirements is just plain

dumb, and self-destructive to boot. Don't even go there! ;-)
