I have been told before that they couldn't find a vein, but now they

don't seem to have a problem finding it. At Lowry they can stick it

with no problems at all and barely felt. At the hospital, no one

can stick one without causing a lot of pain. I have always had a

fear of needles since I end up with my limbs paralyzed for at least

24 hours after being stuck, so they are just making it worse.

What's more, they don't seem to care at all how much they hurt

someone. It is making me a lot more afraid of this surgery, because

I am afraid they won't do anything to ease any pain after it, either.

Darlene,

There is a topical cream called EMLA which is used extensively in

pediatric settings prior to needle sticks. It does require an hour to

set up and become numb. They can also use lidocaine to numb the area

for an IV stick with a little needle before they put the big angiocath

in for the IV. My experience is most anesthesiologists (SP?) prefer

to start IVs like this. You can certainily ask for either of these

things and as someone who has been a nurse for 24 (groan) years I have

not seen these requests denied if resonable or timely.

I have dreadful veins and was told to drink water before I came in for a blood

test, it does work! I drank a litre of water and also to get my blood pumping I

parked my car and walked 10 min's to the lab, it was great, she found my usually

impossible vein first try! and I hardly felt it :-)

Rose,

I am glad that works for you. However, most of my blood work is after a

12-hour fast and I cannot drink any water until after the test. Of course, now

they also want a urine sample. I always find it amusing that they tell you

" nothing to eat or drink for 12 hours " and then expect you to give them a urine

sample.

My dr office says to drink lots of water. You may want to question this...

I've also been told to drink water when fasting. They usually say I can

drink coffee too but I don't like coffee so I drink lots of water.

It would pay to check that they mean no water, as usually no food or drink means

no food or tea, coffee etc water is usually fine, unless you are about to have

an opperation :-)

The instructions from my doctor say nothing to eat or drink except for a little

water to take medications. So far it has not been a big problem. It is a

little uncomfortable having blood taken out of the back of my hand, but it is

better than being poked and prodded to find a vein elsewhere. Actually they

did say I only have to fast after midnight and my appointment is never later

than 9:00 am.
