Guest guest
My daughter, who is a couple of days away from turning 8 months, had a DOC band for 11 weeks. Her clinician, , at Cranial Tech in Paramus, said she had 3 more weeks to go, and by the time the 3 weeks rolled around, was gone and another clinician helped finish treatment. had said that my daughter had a flat spot that wouldnt go away with the band. Yesterday, I went to get a reevaluation by another pediatric neurologist who said I should consider getting a 2nd band and that maybe that flat spot would round out a little more- even though she said the 2nd band results wouldnt be as profound. At the end she said, if it were her daughter, she wouldnt do it. What I dont understand is why didnt anyone tell me this finishing treatment?? My daughter still fit into her band- she could have continued wearing it?!?! I dont know what to do- should I go back to cranial for another opinion? This reevaluation was a team meeting (with neurologist, cranial and pt)- and a Cranial Tech. rep. was there- and she said she "didnt have a crystal ball to predict what a band would do" (some help that was!!) She had a huge bulge on one side and the other side was flat- now her back has a very little curve- and has a very noticeable flat spot. She went from cranial width sd 127 to 125; cranial length 127 to 145 ; cephalic index 100 to 86.2 ; her standard deviation went from +5 to +1 - her head width and length were the same beginning at tx. Her Cranial vault assymetry went from 12 mm to 5 mm ; her fzr-occpl was 143 and then 142; her fzl-ocpr- went from 131 to 137. Will her flat spot ever go away? Is it worth banding again? Anyone with any experiences please help . Thank you. Stay in the know. Pulse on the new .com. Check it out.
Guest guest
Reading posts like this, why does it seem that the amount of correction that people get in one band varies so much? We got 5mm correction and my son had outgrown his band. It seems like I've read posts on here of recieving 10mm correction in one band...am I wrong? Okay, so now to answer your post. I would definitely go for a second band. We were told that our son's plagio (8mm) was the high end of moderate and he'd benefit from a band. Grant it, he was 7.5 months at the start and ended at 9.5 months with 3mm. It does seem odd that the tech didn't recommend a 2nd band considering what we were told from another CT tech. I think 10months is still a good age to get correction. Good luck. > > Hi all, > I know this is a very popular topic, but I wanted to get some > feedback on our situation from the group. Guest guest
The amount of correction in one band varies so widely because each child varies so widely. The amount of correction depends solely on the amount of head growth. So if one child's head grows more in a 3 month, 10 week, etc period, than another child's head grows, then naturally the first child is going to see more correction. It all depends on the child and the amount of growth. Guest guest
What does the tech say about a second band? Will they agree to banding again? Are they recommending you quit? If they aren't recommending you quit and you aren't happy with the results then I think you should go ahead with the second band. I think once you get to the older ages they grow slower. It's so hard to make these decisions. But if they agree and you agree I say go for it. Guest guest
Jack probably hasn't had a big growth spurt yet. Hang in there. I know it is hard but I bet he will have a growth spurt soon. Angie and Jenna 2nd Band? Hi all,I know this is a very popular topic, but I wanted to get some feedback on our situation from the group. My almost 10 month old son (right plagio, left torticollis), has been in his DOC band now for about 10 weeks. At our last CT appt, the tech said that it looked like we would have about one or two more adjustments then would graduate. I was surprised, b/c I thought his plagio was still pretty obvious. So, I inquired about doing a 2nd band. The tech went ahead and re-did measurements and at this point here are our measurements: CVA went from 13mm to 9mm, Mid-Face 5mm to 4mm and Skull-Base 4mm to 3mm. I would definitely like to do a 2nd band. I am happy with the correction we have had but was a little discouraged we only got to a 9mm. I hope I don't sound ungrateful, but I have read a lot of other posts and it seems we haven't had near the correction that some of you all have seen. We are so strict on the 23 hours a day, and for his tort we do our stretches everday and I also take him to PT 2x per week. I am so afraid maybe I am doing something wrong? I feel so guilty that we started later than I actually noticed something was going on (we went back and forth with our pediatrician too - like some many of you). Also, how much correction is possible with a 2nd band? I wonder why the tech didn't suggest doing a 2nd band? Sorry for the long post - any advice/encouragement is appreciated., mom to Jack (10 mos, right plagio, left tort, DOC Band 6/29)Dallas, Texas
Guest guest
ok everyone says this but that certainly confuses me, I would understand age playing a role or how they grow but just the fact they grow playing a role confuses me b/c obviously they are growing or they wouldnt outgrow the band???? so I dont quite understand how how much growth they have plays a role. Can someone enlighten me? On 9/10/07, Becky <res103198@...> wrote: The amount of correction in one band varies so widely because each child varies so widely. Guest guest
We did a second band at 10mm and we have seen a good deal of correction so far. She was 9 1/2 months when we began the second band 8 weeks ago. I am very happy with our decision. Her head looked much better than what it did but I knew it could be better. I am hoping to get to at least a 5 or better. > > Hi all, > I know this is a very popular topic, but I wanted to get some > feedback on our situation from the group. Guest guest
no that certainly is a better explanation then it depends on growth b/c if a baby doesnt grow they dont outgrow it but as you put it and what I figured if they dont grow in the right places they may not get the correction. it will all depend on a baby just as 2 babies with the same risk factors may not both develop plagio On 9/11/07, christineashok <christineashok@...> wrote: Hi ,I do see your point about outgrowing the band and getting differentamounts of correction. here are some comments I would make:-for DOCband they limit the time you can wear it, so by 16 weeks you're done even if it fits (although most kids outgrow it sooner)-for all bands there should be extra room where the head needs togrow, but also the foam is carved out to adjust for growth. If thereis no more foam to carve out then you can't adjust it. The band redirects growth to the flat area, but the exact shape of each band(and kid's head) is different, so that they won't all be adjusted thesame, and even different orthos would adjust the band differently, so some babies could run out of foam and therefore outgrow the bandbefore getting as much correction as another baby. For example my ddhad brachy - so the band tried to hold the width and direct the growthto the back. However she still did get a slight increase in width, and also not all the growth could be directed to the back. Her foreheadgrew and the ortho removed foam from there, until there was no more. You can't really redirect 100% of the growth to the target area, so results will vary. This makes sense to me, but may just sound confusing to the rest ofthe world ;-)-christinesydney 20 mo starband grad> > > >> > > > Hi all,> > > > I know this is a very popular topic, but I wanted to get some > > > > feedback on our situation from the group. Guest guest
That's really the only place my husband and I still notice it. I will ask them at our next appointment if they think the ears will correct much more. That may be one of the deciding factors. Plus insurance hasn't covered the first one yet...it's still pending after 3 months - ugh! -----Original Message-----From: Plagiocephaly [mailto:Plagiocephaly ]On Behalf Of Kami WhitneySent: Thursday, January 24, 2008 3:48 PMPlagiocephaly Subject: Re: 2nd Band? Wow! What an improvement, and he does look great! You are lucky that he is still young enough to get another band if you want to. I only realy notice it in the ears. Do they think they can correct that? I know they say they are the last thing to correct. Kamistacihyde <shydecomporium (DOT) net> wrote: We are deciding on whether or not to get a second band. Guest guest
Louden's 10 looks better than my son's 8 (before he was banded)! Although, does his head look as good in person? I know I could never quite (and neither did CT's photos) show how his head really looked in person...it looked way worse in person. If you think you may regret not doing a 2nd band then go for it. I'm guessing if insurance paid for the first band then they'll pay for the 2nd. Good luck in your decision. lisa PS: What does CT say? They were the ones that said our son would benefit being banded and yet he only had 8mm assymetry. > We are deciding on whether or not to get a second band.
