Guest guest
Hi , I would say that your son is at a good age for repositioning, but if his head is more severe than maybe he would benefit more from getting a band. I am not a professional so I can't say for sure. I would guess that it all depends on how severe his plagio is. A lot of doctors like you to try repostioning before they will decide if your baby will need to be in a band. Isabelle 8 mos STARband 1.31.06 > > hello, my name is . Guest guest
Hi , Thank you for your advice. Do you know about how long the doctor will try the repostioning?? Because he doesn't have another appointment until May 30th. > > > > hello, my name is . My son Leland has just been diagnosed > with > > positional plagiocephaly. Guest guest
Hi ! Congrats on doing the research early! I would say go to a specialist to have your son's head measured, then do the repositioning and have it remeasured after a month or so. That way, you can see how much improvement comes from repositioning. You do have the advantage that your son is only 3 months old because he is not yet moving around in the crib. My daughter, who is very active and has been in a big hurry ever since she figured out how to creep, can be repositioned, but because she rolls around and crawls around in her sleep, she does not stay in the position we try to put her in! Once your son is 6 - 7 months old, he will probably also be moving around in his sleep, and the repositioning will be less effective. The MD specialist I saw only measured by hand operated calipers and this did not turn out to be that accurate. I got a prescription for a helmet from my ped and I then went to a orthoticist/helmet supplier who measured with a starband laser machine, which was very accurate, and her Diagonal Difference was greater - .86 (more lopsided head). So the lesson there may be to have your son measured by the actual helmet supplier and just pay for the visit to them. I have been told that up to a 3mm diagonal difference is considered normal and over 1cm difference is considered deformed. Under the Blue Cross definition I was told that 8mm or .8cm diagonal difference was considered " medically necessary " for insurance coverage purposes. That should give you some reference. Good Luck!! . > > > > hello, my name is . My son Leland has just been diagnosed > with > > positional plagiocephaly. Guest guest
Hi , Thank you for the advice. I think I will do that. Do you know if I will need to get a referal to see a specialist?? > > > > > > hello, my name is . My son Leland has just been diagnosed > > with > > > positional plagiocephaly. Guest guest
Hi , welcome to the group. is right that your son is at a great age to try repositioning. You can try it for a couple of months and still have time to re-evaluate your progress and decide if you want to band him after all. Repo is more than just making him sleep on his side though. That was a rather simplistic definition your pede gave you. What you want to do is make sure that he is off his flat spot as much as humanly possible. You will want to limit if not eliminate the use of a bouncy chair or swing. When he is sleeping, prop his shoulder up on the flat side so his head rolls over to the round side. You can do this by pinning a washcloth or small towel to the back of his jammies or onesie. Also do this if he has to spend any time in the swing or bouncy chair. I found that the bumbo seat (now available at Babies R Us and Target among others), an exersaucer, and ny Jump-Up were very helpful. Give him LOTS of tummy time, even if he hates it. If he does hate it, just do it lots of times for just minutes at a time until he learns to like it. It really is beneficial in so many other ways too. If you go to our Files section under Repositioning Headquarters there is a lot of information there to help you. If you decide to repo your son, take pictures of his head from the top and also from the sides periodically so that you can evaluate your progress. Also set a deadline (mine was my dd's 6mo well baby visit) to evaluate how the head is doing and whether you are going to continue repo'ing. HTH, please let me know if you need any help at all. Guest guest
Becky Sarh repo grad, Thank so much I will try the wash cloth trick. I have found that my son will stay on his stomach for awhile longer now that I have bought him a poppy pillow. He seems to like that better then laying on the ground. > > > > hello, my name is . Guest guest
, I think that most doctors like you to try repositioning for atleast 2 or 3 months. I am not entirely sure on that though. With my daughter our first ped said at her 2 month check up that the right side of her head was getting flat but she never told me to try repositioning, needless to say I didn't care for her and I switched peds and then at my daughter's 4 month check up they referred us to a physical therapist and it was then that they said her head was already too bad and she needed a helmet. But from all of the information that I have learned from this group it seems like the doctors like 2 or 3 months of the repositioning. Also there is some good repositioning tips in the files section. Guest guest
I am glad the boppy is helping with the tummy time. How severe do you believe his flatness is? I think if you can be dilligent with the repo and also catch a good growth spurt, then you will be surprised and pleased at the progress you will see. Please let me know how things are going. Guest guest
......BTW, I forgot to tell you, if you want to look at my dd's progress pics (I took them monthly) look in the photos section under Before and after/Repositioned and her name is S. THere are the pics from the time that I was repo'ing her and also one from a year later where you can't even tell she was ever flat. becky > > > > > > hello, my name is .
