Guest guest
What would be considered, " Frequent Urination? " I sometimes get the tingling in the extremeties, which is cured by eating. It goes right away. I have had some visual disturbances, such as from time to time I will see colored dots, blue and yellow. Other then that I have not had any of the symptoms listed below. My wife thinks I may have hypoglycemia issues. What exactly is a simple fasting glucose test? Can someone describe this procedure? Thanks, Josh --- Sandy wrote: > Hi Josh, > > Frequent urination > Thirst > blurry vision > feeling weak at times when you haven't eaten in a > long time > Unexplained weight loss > Tingling/numbness in extremties > > These were my symptoms - best bet is to get a simple > fasting glucose test from your doctor as these > symptoms can be symptoms of other things as well. > > Do you have diabetes in your family? Guest guest
My son was going to the bathroom 3-4 times at night and then going more often at school during the day, as in going from rarely ever going during the school day to having to be excused during class time b/c he couldn't hold it any longer. I don't know details of how they do the fasting test. They just did a finger prick test on my son at the Dr office at a late afternoon appt. If you are concerned about your symptoms, get an appt with the Dr. If the symptoms are bothering you, it is probably something that needs to be addressed. Guest guest
Josh, The test for diabetes is just a blood test. They draw blood and test for your glucose levels - usually they test the fasting blood glucose level (meaning you don't eat for 8 hours - go in for the test first thing in the morning). Rather than wonder, simply give your doctor a call and ask for a blood workup including a fasting blood glucose. Then you'll know. The vision symptom is blurred vision. Frequent urination you would know - like every 15 to 30 minutes and getting up several times in the night. But as others have said everyone gets different symptoms, some get no symptoms so it is best to just get tested. Always good to get a blood workup every year and get some baselines established anyway! Sandy Re: Early Signs of Diabetes? What would be considered, " Frequent Urination? Guest guest
<< What would be considered, " Frequent Urination? " >> Hi Josh, I'm a T1, diagnosed as an adult (age 31) 8.5 years ago, so my symptoms were very extreme and acute, but for me, 'frequent' meant that I would go to the ladies' room at work (and when I did use the bathroom I was going for long periods of time, as if no matter how much I went, it still wasn't enough), walk back to my desk, sit down, and almost immediately have to get back up to return to the bathroom again and again, all day long. Part of it was the massive amount of liquid I was consuming (upwards of a gallon of liquid before 10:00 in the morning), but I've NEVER used the bathroom that frequently no matter HOW MUCH I've had to drink under normal circumstances. I had a twenty-minute drive home from work at the time, and although I went to the bathroom immediately before leaving work in the evenings, I could never manage to make it home without stopping on the road to use the bathroom again. It was almost *constant*, and normally woke me up a half dozen times a night also. I was so symptomatic when I was diagnosed, that it was like reading a textbook definition of diabetes. The amount of water and other liquids that I drank would probably make me -- and anyone else, for that matter -- ill now, but back then, I couldn't drink it fast enough, and even then, my mouth still felt as if it was filled with cotton and my lips and the skin around my mouth were dried and cracked. I was diagnosed in late September, and although I was at my sickest during late summer, and of course driving home in bright sunshine many evenings, it wasn't uncommon for me to nearly fall asleep at the wheel of my car because I was so exhausted. Hope some of this helps. Please do have your doctor check into this for you; it's best if you have ANY indication that something is wrong to be safe. Not everyone is like me at diagnosis -- I HAD to go to the doctor, because I was so sick (sicker than I've ever been before or since) and couldn't ignore it any longer. I was only steps away from being unable to function at all -- but that's one of the trickier parts of this condition: the *lack* of symptoms that many people experience, or the subtlety of those symptoms. My symptoms were frequent urination - not every 15 minutes, but just about every hour on the hour and at least 3 times during the night. That was frequent to me, because I used to just go about twice a day and never during the night. Constant thirst. Hubby figured something was up when I could finish a bottle of soda. Usually I can only get through about a theird of a bottle befroe i give up on it...lol...you should see all the half empties kicking around in my truck...lol. but I was sucking them right down top to bottom without so much as a breath. I was exhausted. Didn't have energy to do anything. And irritable! I had been married 26 days when I was dx'd. I'm surprised hubby even married me! Boy was I a b!tch! For 2 months prior. My vision was so blury I couldn't read road signs. (And I have 20/10 vision). I was eating ALL the time. A half package of Oreos and a half gallon of milk for breakfast, then some cereal, then some candy bars, then some steak and tatos, them more candy...I just was always eating. But not putting on any weight. Couldn't figure that one out - I should have ballooned, but I didn't gain a single pound. I kept putting off my doc appts and cancelling them, figuring I couldn't have diabetes - I was getting tested for everything else...overactive bladder, PID, Endometriosis, Interstitial Cystitis...you name it, but no way could I have diabetes. I had fasting bloodwork done in January 05 and my bg's were perfect. February I started peeing alot and getting the other symptoms. In May 05, I finally kept my appt and my finger prick level was 500+. A1C results: 14+%. I was told I should have been in a diabetic coma or dead. Scary thing was...I felt absolutely fine. My body had gotten used to those levels. Even 8 months later, if I get 115 or lower, I feel low. I get all the signs of hypo, even though I'm not, because my body is still adjusting to being closer to normal levels. I have nearly passed out before at 100. Best to see a doctor ASAP. Do NOT put it off! Luckily, there was no permanent damage for me, because the onset was so quick and I did get it taken care of fairly soon. The faster you catch it, the better off you'll be...and if it's not diabetes...then you'll have ruled out at least one thing it's not in your quest to find out what it is! Good luck!!! -Jess NYS

The first time I hit 140, I was shaking and cold and feeling like I was about to pass out. It took my body a couple of months of normal readings to adjust to the normal numbers. Glad to know it wasn't just me....... Duckie
