Guest guest
You go to school and study Court Stenography. Actually, a CART reporter is a Court Reporter, like the ones you see sitting at the front of the court taking notes on a machine. That's the same machine they use but instead of the data being saved for later printing, it is sent directly, real time, to a laptop. You need to check the licensing requirements in your state, if any. -------------- Original message -------------- How do I get a job doing this???? -Robin in memphis

Guest guest
Court reporters use several technologies. The little machine they tap keys on is a phonetic thing - they type by how the word sounds, it's not a regular keyboard with each letter being typed. It's like shorthand on a machine. Some court reporters use stenography or shorthand using pen and paper. Some use a " steno-mask " which is a big mask they put over their mouth and nose and repeat every word that is said into the mask which has a recorder connected to it. Most always they also tape record whatever it is they are reporting. In modern courtrooms, they use the steno machine and the tapes are fed into a reader and typed pages come out. That way the judge can look over the days proceedings while it is still fresh. I learned all this during the 8 years I spent as a legal nurse consultant. Court reporting is a good career, you get to hear lots of interesting things, though lots of boring things too. Some court reporters never work in a court room, they do depositions and things in attorneys offices. So that is why they cost so much - they are in great demand and they are used to being paid by lawyers and courts who usually have a lot more money than parents and school systems.
