My daughter is 7.5 months. She did the same thing until about the last

2 weeks. I think it might be a phase as far as the stiffening thing

Her aunt calls her Archie :) because she's so stiff. She also liked

to lean to one side, now just when she's tired. I'm not sure what to

make of it, either, but you're not alone there!

Our son has been in PT for tort for a while now and he definitely has

had the slouch thing, off and on. Our PT works on strengthening one

whole side of his body (not just his neck), because sometimes tort can

cause baby to be stronger/shorter on one side and weaker on the other

side. When our son was still an infant, he would kind of look like a

subtle C shape when he was laying on his back asleep. (I am not sure

about the straightening, my other kids of have done that--might be a

baby thing.)

A physical therapist should be able to help you with stretches and

exercises for the torticollis.

Hope that helps--Stacey

Hello

Tort causes a lot of other problems. Imagine a sweater that has a

pulled string, it is not just where that is, but the entire sweater up

or down. To me it sounds like your son may have high / low muscle

tone. Does he do the airplaining when on his tummy too? My daughter

did that a lot.

Take him to a pt to be evaluated for the high /low muscle done with

comes with tort. My daughter was also 5wks early and we did about 9

months of pt /ot 3x a wk. You can also ask for a neurology referral.

They will eval him for the muscle tone as well. It is a good doc to

see if they were born preemie.

I just recently found out that my son, who is 5.75 months

old, has tort and moderate plagio. We went to cranial tech

yesterday for the consultation and we are waiting now for pt to

start. Everything you said-my son does! He is always arching his

back and hardly ever wants to be in a " seated " position. He is also

developing slower physically than he is supposed to.

I have also noticed him doing what one lady said " the airplane. " My

husband and I have been calling it " sky diver. "

He can't sit up yet and his left side is much weaker than this

right. Sometimes he gets " caught " on his left arm and can't get it

out from under him. He also can not roll over off of his left side-

always from his right.

This journey is just beginning for us and I have to admit-I'm a

little scared.

Good luck to you all!

It is a little scary, but our experience was that once our son

started PT we could see dramatic results. Babies are so programmed

to learn and adapt, that from week to week he would really respond

to whatever the PT had him working on. Our son is not out of PT

completely yet, but he is looking great and therapy really does

wonders. is very fortunate that he has parents and doctors

that noticed his tort and he is getting help. I recently heard

about a kindergarten readiness seminar where the teachers were told

that one factor that was causing 5 year olds to struggle was

untreated torticollis that resulted in motor delays at school age!

So treatment at 6 months is great.

Thanks for the insight. I am so thankful that I found so much

wonderful information regarding this online. I know that we will be

able to help and we are willing to do whatever it takes. He

is our miracle baby-it took us 11 years to have him.

Thanks for your response. We're scheduled to see a PT on the 16th

and ECI is sending out an Occupational Therapist on the29th.

Hopefully that will cover everything. I've been trying to get in to

see a neurologist but they require a physicial referral and my ped

isn't excited about giving one. We'll try the PT for the referral!

> What you described, is exactly how my daughter is. She is a twin,

and her sister is so much more 'squishier' than her.. Peyton on the

other hand, has always been very stiff. She will sit but she is as

stiff as a board.

> This all stems from her torticollis. She has learned to compensate

for the weakness in her neck by tensing her other muscles in her

body.. esp her torso, arms and legs. Does your son see a physical

therapist for his tort? This is so important for dealing with the

stiffness and all the muscles that he might be using to compensate

for his neck weakness in addition to tort.

with tort, severe plagio and severe bracy. He's been in the STARband

for 1 week. We've been doing tort exercises for 3 weeks.

> That was a lot of info....here's my question.

> Cohen does not seem to want to bend in the middle. When we try

to set him on the floor we have to force him to bend. We get him

down in the sitting position and he automatically wants to

straighten back out (usually falling backwards). When you pick him

up to hold him he stiffens up. Most babies love to do the jumping

thing in your lap where they bend and straighten their legs. Cohen

won't do that. He'll stand stiff as a board. He hates the bumbo

because it forces him to sit; yet he'll stay in the exersaucer or

jumparoo forever because his body is straight, not bent.

>

> On the other end of the spectrum....When he's in his highchair

eating or in the stroller he slumps down and always seems to want to

lean to one side. I feel like he's certainly strong enough to hold

himself up. I think he's falling to one side because he feels like

he can straighten his body out better that way.

> Could any of these problems be related to his tort? Shoud I

talk to his specialist?
