Guest guest
Hi , and everybody, It is always encouraging to hear good news from using about using Fish Oils. I am using 2 Pro EFAs and 1 EPA Daily in the morning and my son who is 32 months old, always is speaking. He is combining two words. The only problem, he seems to be having is he seems to drop the initial consonant on certain words. This is a huge improvement from when he was 2, when he only said one word 'Ma'. Right now, he says 'Ottle' for Bottle, 'Ucky Cheese' for Chucky Cheese etc. I want to increase his dosage. I have been reading everyone's messages on this forum. I also went and bought Dr. Barry Sears book 'THE OMEGA RX ZONE - The Miracle of the new High Dose Fish Oil'. I am little scared to increase the dosage. Actually in his book Dr. Barry mentions to give 18-20 gms of purified Fish oil to kids but he did not mention the age. Since most of the kids in ths forum are very young, I am little hesitant. My son has not gained a single pound since I have started him on ProEFA. Also Dr. Barry mentions, the Potential side effects to be Excessive bleeding Increased LDL Cholesterol levels Depression of the Immune System Excess Production of good eicosanoids Increased blood sugar level in type 2 diabetese. Increased incidence of stroke Reduction of antioxidant levels But in his 3 year study, he has not seen too much of these side effects in his patients. He also tells, how you can avoid the side effects, by using pharmaceutical grade fish oil, by adding small amount of GLA to you diet by eating two bowls of slow cooked oatmeal each week, by eating lots of fruits, vegeatbles, using extra virgin olive oil and taking supplemental vitamin E. He also mentions about doing periodic blood tests, when you are giving high dosages of Fish Oil. If the AA/EPA ratio in the blood test is above 3, then you can increase the dosage. Your goal is to keep this ratio between 1.5 and 3. He mentions that he has cured Alzheimer's disease, dementia, cognitive impairment, strokes, Attention Deficit Disorder, dyslexia, depression, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis and many other neurological conditions. Also, he has cured Haert Attacks, Diabetes and Cancers. I have given here information from the book and also some fear from my part on high dosages. He also says that once on the dosage, the patient has to stay on that dosage forever. So, here we are. I have been comparing the ProEFA capsules with the Complete Omega 3-6-9 liquid. I think according to and Dr. Barry both, the liquid is better to use at home and use capsules, when you are travelling. One difference I found in the liquid vs. capsules is that 2 capsules of ProEFA satisfy your 100% requirement of vitamin E but the liquid (1 teaspoon only satisfies 17% of our daily needs.) Is it true also when I am just giving the liquid by squeezing the capsules. I have a question for also, What is the dosage your kids are on right now and what are their ages. Please respond to this email. As I am trying to make an informed decision over here. It is a question about all the kids with apraxia and their future. Thanks, Manjeet [childrensapraxiane t] New to the group from Illinois Hello all! I just joined the group today and have learned so much from reading your posts! There seems to be a wealth of knowledge here! I have three boys, ages 7, 5 and 3. My three year old is the reason I joined this group. His name is Gavin. Gavin was born 4 weeks early and had problems breathing at first. Then they found that he had acidemia, an extremely high biliruben count and a few apnea incidents. Gavin took a very long time to hit the milestones. He didn't roll over until after 6 months. He didn't sit up until 10 months, didn't crawl until he was a year and didn't walk until 16 months. Any concerns I brought to the attention of the doctors were dismissed and the doctors always said, " He won't have any problems catching up by the time he's two. " Well, at two, he had maybe 3 words and I was the only one who knew what they meant. The doctor told me that if he wasn't saying more words in six months, to bring him back in. During that six months, I started noticing that there were other areas where Gavin seemed off. He was sticking things in his nose, ears, eyes, etc. Dumping flour, sugar, cereal out and rolling in it. He requested many baths a day. I told the doc that I wondered if it was sensory related (I really had NO clue what I was talking about). She then sent him to be evaluated. In the seven areas they tested him, he was severly " behind " in 5 and moderately " behind " in 2. Then started the EI (I call it " eventual " intervention) evaluations. The first meeting was in September and the first evaluation was the beginning of November. I was not able to get him in to see a speech therapist or occupation therapist until the end of January. He goes to speech therapy twice a week for verbal apraxia and occupational therapy once a week for sensory integration disorders. Since he turned three in April, I have been constantly fighting with my insurance company to pay for the speech therapy. They had been paying it for about a month and a half before they decided that they shouldn't have been paying. They informed me today that they are going to recover the money they paid to ST and OT. I just made a friend who moved here from TN whose son also has verbal apraxia and she told me about fish oil. I am waiting for it to arrive in the mail to see what kind of results will come from it. We got the Nordic Naturals children's DHA. We got a 90 day supply and then will re-evaluate with all of the information that I have so far received. Gavin has recently started babbling. When he is trying to say something to me, he sucks air through his teeth. I am willing to hear any ideas or suggestions!
Guest guest
Manjeet. My son did the same thing...he used to say ook for book, ruck for truck...apparently, pretty common in Apraxic kids...Today at 4.5, he can say the words correctly. Our regime of SpeechTherapy, EFA's and Carnaware have been a huge benefit for our son. Hi , and everybody, It is always encouraging to hear good news from using about using Fish Oils. Guest guest
Carnaware is still on my list of things to possibly consider...did you find dramatic improvement with carnaware and how did it compare to effects of omegas? Thanks. -claudia Re: [ ] Important - Fish Oil Dosage - Dr Barry Sears Book Manjeet. Guest guest
Hi Manjeet! From what I've heard Dr. Barry Sears has " done a lot of good " but it's a mixed bag as far as some of the stuff he says. In addition I'm not sure if the dosage you say he recommended to kids is correct (did you mean to say grams?) 18 to 20 grams would be double plus of what is using. (around 9 grams a day) There's some misinformation in this book. On the list of side effects for example most are taken out of context and in some cases at one time suspected (such as excessive bleeding) and proven false. (outside of if your child is already on blood thinners) You can do research on each one but since that book is published in 2002, search for the research since then. It has been found that fish oils help those with depression (Dr. Stoll's research is one of the studies and is in his book The Omega 3 Connection published in 2001), heart disease (Dr. Artemis P. Simopoulos book The Omega Diet published in 1999), dyslexia, ADHD (Dr. Stordy's work and book The LCP Solution published in 2000) and improve cognitive functioning (so many but here's just one http://www.drpressman.com/Library/ImpactOfEssentialFattyAcidsOnBrain. htm ), cancer " Omega-3 PUFA and Their Systemic Presence Roles in cardiovascular disease: maintain lower levels of serum triglycerides, maintain healthy platelet function and blood coagulation levels, lower the risk of sudden death from stroke or cardiac infarct Roles in prevention and therapy of cancer: are regulators of cancer cell death (apoptosis) during carcinogenesis (breast, prostate and colon cancers), reduce anticancer drug toxicity and facilitate the therapeutic effect of some anticancer drugs Roles in the eye and brain: are potential regulators of retinal and neuronal signal transduction, appear to be regulators in mood disorders. What is their role in verbal apraxia? " From guess where? http://www.cherab.org/information/dietaryeffects/efawhatsthat.html I do believe and like all hope and pray that individuals can develop cures for conditions that don't yet have a cure. But...I don't believe anyone can say they are able to cure a disease or condition that doesn't have a cure in 2002 without the rest of the world knowing by even 2003 no less 2006. (I'm sure by now J Fox as well as the rest of the world would want to know how!) ~~~~~~~~2006 clips about conditions that as of yet have no cure: There is no known cure for multiple sclerosis at this time. However, there are promising therapies that may slow the disease. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000737.htm The most common form of dementia among older people is Alzheimer's disease (AD), which initially involves the parts of the brain that control thought, memory, and language. Although scientists are learning more every day, right now they still do not know what causes AD, and there is no cure. http://www.nia.nih.gov/Alzheimers/Publications/adfact.htm At the moment, no treatment can cure a stroke, and most people will have some form of residual damage, which will vary from person to person. http://www.drugdigest.org/DD/HC/Treatment/0,4047,550288,00.html Although no cure for mild cognitive impairment (MCI) exists, several medications as well as many non-medication approaches can potentially improve daily functioning and quality of life. http://www.mayoclinic.org/mild-cognitive-impairment/treatment.html The J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research is dedicated to ensuring the development of a cure for Parkinson's disease within this decade through an aggressively funded research agenda. http://www.michaeljfox.org/ We learn and grow each day, so at times what we believe true today we learn to be false tomorrow...no less 4 years later. Perhaps Dr. Sears needs to write another book? (or someone - it's your turn to write one on EFAs and apraxia!) =====
