turning hearing aid off

My son is almost six years old. He got his MEDEL implant at 20 months. He has

some residual hearing in his unimplanted ear and he has been wearing his Phonak

sono forte hearing aid in his unimplanted ear. I've posted about him before in

not understanding what benefit he may be getting from the aid because he doesn't

perform differently one way or another and he's never commented when his hearing

aid is not functioning properly. Thanks for those who have responded in the

past to my inquiries.

Here's what's going on now... He started kindergarten last week. He's already

had three years of preschool. I've noticed his hearing aid switch turned off a

few days after school. When I asked him about it he told me, " It was too loud. "

And when I questioned further, he told me that the cafeteria was too loud and

" work time " was " too loud " I'm fine with him turning the aid off in times it is

distracting or bothersome. I want him to be a good advocate. But I don't know

how to figure out what exactly is going on. First off it seems that he forgets

to turn the aid back on, so he's not missing whatever sound he gets from it in

the first place. There had been a few occasions this summer that I tried to

help him understand the difference between when his aid is on and when it is

off. I would turn it on and off in the movies, or in a noisy environment or on

a windy day at the beach. I wanted him to sense the difference and I would ask

which he liked better. So now I think he's making those decisions for himself.

Should I trust him? I know the cafeteria must be terrible acoustically. Does

anyone else have a child who can comment on the use of the aid and the CI in

noisy environments? Do your kids prefer to just have the one CI on and do

without the aid in these circumstances? When do they like to have the aid on?

I asked his hearing impaired itinterant to help out with this. She wrote

me an email and told me

I'm been w/ during his lunch, outside during recess & in the classroom. He

was interacting, having conversations & was not having any difficulty

communicating, following conversations, etc. the day I was w/ him. I believe I

shared this w/ you in a previous contact. Each time I 've worked w/ he is

interacting w/ his peers & is always very attentive during reading & other group

activities and able to answer questions,

state opinions, make predictions & responds appropriately.

She also added,

If you are concerned w/ how his aid effects his

listening/hearing I would talk w/ an audi before making a major

purchase. It seems is not concerned w/ using the aid at this point.

That was in my response to my telling her I was considering upgrading his

hearing aid and I really wanted to determine how best to use his hearing aid in

school.

I've also noticed moisture droplets in 's hearing aid tubing in the

afternoon and that usually indicates it's not putting out sound. But never

comments on this. He would just keep wearing it as is. I've taken it off and

noticed it stopped working.

So bottom line, I'm wondering if your kids decide to change their hearing aid

settings in different environments while using their CI.
