I am wondering if anyone has used modern medicine to have additional

children wocf? I know this is a very touchy subject, and I hesitate

to ask, but am considering having another child. I have a 2.5 year

old wcf and a sister wcf. It is NOT that I wouldn't WANT another

child wcf, but let's face it, we are all looking for a cure so those

living with CF have healthier longer lives. I just want to know if

there are other ways of conceiving a child wocf other that using cvs

or an amnio after the fact?! I really hope I am not offending anyone

with this question. I am new to the group and hope I have posed the

question so that no one is hurt. We all have different opinions on

this, but I was just wondering from a medical stand point, what is

available to us. Thank you for helping me research this very

difficult decision for me and my husband.

Melinda -

Don't ever apologize for asking questions - I'm new too and asking is the

only way to find out, right? :) I'm actually really glad you asked because

we are in a similar situation. I don't want to start trying to have more

children any time soon but I know that I'd like to have another one

eventually. We've just been " hit " so hard these last few months (Liam being

diagnosed in March of this year) that this not been the top of my list. I've

been thinking about it a lot the last few weeks though.... probably because

Liam is at an age that we would normally think about starting to have another

child. Having 3 is not possible right now in our situation but I'd like to

know what options we have.....so I'm glad you asked. I'm just going to sit

back and listen now! :) Best of luck to you - just wanted you to know you

have someone else in the same boat. Hugs - Carey

We are dealing with much the same thing. Glad you asked. Our son is 17months

with cf and is our first. More children is a big thing for us. We really

dont think our family could handle 2 or more kids with cf . So we have found

a option called PGD. I'm not sure if its avaliable in other countries.

Its a ivf type thing. If anyone wants more info let me know.

Hi Melinda,

I have two boys, one wcf and will hopefully be considering a third (girl) in

five years time. We will be looking into IVF to rule out CF and feel totally

comfortable about it. I know some people have issues with playing with nature

but I'm not religious and I'm also the one who has to live with a child with Cf

so I'll do what ever I have to to make sure my baby is healthy. Hopefully the

cure will along by then anyway. We will be waiting to see how Connor goes

because we might not cope with a third if he were sick a lot of the time. But I

still want a girl - just have to convince hubby.

After just writing that I feel like I'm contradicting myself. I'm always telling

my family (not close) about how CF isn't as bad as they perceive so I dont get

their pity. One side of my family is rushing out to get carrier tested so

they'll know when they have kids or if they have more. That's all well and good

but it's like they wont have kids or not with their husband/partner if they are

a carrier. I try to get across that if you do have a child with cf it's not the

end of the world and you shouldn't be putting relationships at risk because of

that. And then I go and say I wont have another child with CF. I guess what I

meant is that we are in a position to prevent CF in our next baby and we will

because can. We live with CF and I am thankful that it is CF and not something

much worse where as my family seem to think that CF is the end of the world.

Sorry, got a bit off track........

Carey,

Thanks for your support. I just answered an email with my private email (in

case others did not want to hear). I will not do that again. I think this

is on the minds of a lot of us. My son spent 3 months in the NICU, before

ever coming home. It was touch and go as to whether he would ever come

home. I already knew he was to be born with CF, but I was not ready for

this. Now that he is home and doing so well, I am afraid to chance it

again. He is so in need of a sibbling. I stay home with him and protect

him from all the possible germs - especially during the winter, and he

really needs a companion right now. I can only play so much football,

soccer and baseball in one day. He is just so lonely right now. He said

the other day that he wanted a baby in our house. I asked if he would help

take care of the baby and he replied, " Yes, I will give them enzymes and

vitamins " . It was soooo sweet - I wanted to cry!
