A couple of hearing test questions

We just came back from our latest hearing test (booth test) with a new

audiologist. I like him better than our previous one, he seemed to do

a much more thorough job and was pretty good about getting Clara to

cooperate.

He got no responses in her left ear, that was to be expected. I am a

little concered with her right ear though. She didn't respond to

anything softer than 20db, and at 500hz there was no reponse until

30db. She got tubes 3 weeks ago. The audi said that the tubes could

be the reason why she didn't repond till 30db. Why would that be?

Also, is 20db good enough? He said that was just fine, nothing to

worry about, she can hear all the speech sounds at that level, etc.

But I've heard that normal hearing thresholds for children are 10db or

15db. We are going to look into the possibility of a Transear for the

left ear, but if that doesn't work out for her, should I consider

getting an aid for her right ear?

Thanks in advance,

Cheryl

Hi Cheryl,

I had a similiar experience with my son recently. See post 40902 &

40896 for great responses. It sounds like your daughter is

unilaterally deaf? Could be that you might need to be more aggressive

about aiding her only good hearing ear? With my son, both ears are

about the same. Good luck!

Hi there,

, my hearing child, is the one who had to have tubes put in. We

have monitored his hearing since birth. With the fluid in his ears, he was

hearing at around 30-35 across the board. With both tubes in, his hearing was

around 25-30. This past December we tested him again. He had lost one of the

tubes, but the other is still in his ear. The ear with the with the tube is

still at 30, but the one without the tube looks to be around 10.

I'm not sure if this is typical, but I thought I'd share.

Some men see things as they are and ask why. Others dream things that never were
