Hey all,

I've heard some of you mention " otter " boxes for keeping hearing aids

dry at the beach and such. Where do you buy them?

Also, I was wondering about ear protection while swimming. Do many of

you have your children use ear plugs or other such items to keep the

water out?

Thanks, once again, for the info. (Love this list :-) )

Go to www.otterbox.com for more info on the Otter Box and where you can

buy one in your area. I usually get them at sporting goods stores, in

the boating section.

Hadley wears waterproof aids in the water, so her ears are already

plugged up. However, her ENT swears by a small drop of mineral oil in

each ear every night, which then allows the water to easily run out of

the ears. He also strongly discourages the use of the portable ear

dryers, as it throws off the natural balance of moisture and ear wax in

the ear and contributes to fungal infections. (And, having fought a

fungal infection for three months last fall, I can promise you that you

don't want to deal with that!)

You can also have swimming molds made at the audiologist's office. I

think all of the major manufacturers have a line of swimming molds for

kids with tubes. These do cut down on the usability of residual

hearing, however, so they usually aren't purchased unless there's a real

need for the ears to stay dry. (Plus, depending on how dry you need to

keep the ears, they may have to be remade several times in one summer).

Online hearing stores, like www.heartoday.com and www.justbekuz.com,

also sell different products to reduce the amount of water that gets

into the ear.

Otter boxes are just one brand and there are several.Any camping store

should have them and they are often in the boating section. We have a few brands

in several sizes. We now also have a very small " dry-bag " that can be rolled up

and put into an otter box or put in our large dry bags. Ian's aids went

white water rafting in the little dry-bag which was then inside the big one

which was lashed to the raft. The aids were dry as dry can be at the end of a

VERY wet ride.

Ian doesn't need to use ear plugs for water. We've never had an issue with

swimming and ears so i can't help here.

But we LOVE our otter boxes and dry-bags.

The RION aids that Hadley has have been around for years (Dolphins).

There is a new kind that might be available in the US now from Eurion,

the LOTOS. Last I heard, they were only available in Europe, but that

may have changed in the last six months. I've lost all my bookmarks,

but you can google the names or search the Listen-Up archives (I think

I've posted the information a number of times in the last year, so it

should come up).

Can I ask what you mean by " portable ear dryer " ? We've battled a fungal

infection as well so this caught my eye. We're about to start using acetic acid

drops in Emmett's ears, suggested and prescribed by our ENT. We're looking for

some measure of prevention against infections (bacterial and fungal) this

summer. We've already had 2 bacterial in a month because of humidity. The second

one we caught just at the beginning so we're hoping to get rid of it quickly.

Thanks,

johanna

Johanna,

I'll put my two cents in here. Two doctors at Boston Children's

Hospital recommended a portable ear dryer for my son who has been

fighting a fungal infection since March. It began when an ear tube

failed. With the ear dryer he can take showers and wash his hair. His

doctor feels that it has contributed to the easing of the fungal

infection which is still not completely gone. It is called something

like " sahara ear dryer " . You can google it. We got it on Amazon.
