Have you tried hiding the capsule in a mouthful of

food? It's how I get my two year old to swallow a

capsule.

Hi . Doesn't your child bite on it sometimes? This stuff tastes

seriously foul and extremely bitter.

Well, it's his halibut liver oil capsule that I do it

with. They're pretty small. I've only ever seen him

bite it the once. It tastes awful, I tasted it after

he bit one, blech! I keep it to just the one capsule

and make it predictable, second bite at breakfast.

First bite, just cereal, second bite, with capsule.

He gets so much benefit from the cis vitamin A that I

break a couple rules, the hiding pills in food and

hand feeding a two year old ones. Rules and should

don't mean much to me any more, lol. I do think by

making it a predictable thing in that second bite, it

kind of makes it a 'medicine' treatment.

Good luck,

Gillian,

Sorry but your doctor has absolutely NO clue about Essential Fatty Acids. You

need the Vit E to inhibit rancidity of the EFAs. And I would change the Omega

product to a high EPA with just a little DHA (10%) and GLA. Its the EPA the

child needs after the age of 2 and not so much the DHA. EPA elongates into DHA

anyway. Also reduce Omega 6 intake. Any seed based oils (sunflaower, corn and

safflower) are usually Omega 6 and red meats and cow dairy....

[ ] Omega-3

Hi all,

Our dr has just taken Sam off his Efalex because she thinks the Vit E might

be blocking absorption of the omega-3, and also because he apparently

already has an overload of omega-6. She has put him on one with ginko, which

can't be bitten because it is so bitter. I have tried for 2 days now to

teach Sam to swallow it (it's only a small capsule) but no go.

So my question: Does anyone know of a brand without Vit E or omega-6 and

which is screened for mercury etc levels?

Thanks!!

Gillian.

Hi ,

Yes that's interesting. I remember someone (Dana?) posting about the

importance of high DHA and low EPA (or was it the other way round?). I've

been looking at Kirkman's products again and see that the Vit E in Nordics

is MUCH less than Efalex (3IU per cap, cf 14IU Efalex), so it will be easy

to reduce the Vit E considerably by switching brands and still have the

inhibiting effect. BTW is GLA omega-6???

Thanks, Gillian

You need the Vit E to inhibit rancidity of the EFAs. And I would change the

Omega product to a high EPA with just a little DHA (10%) and GLA. Its the

EPA the child needs after the age of 2 and not so much the DHA. EPA

elongates into DHA anyway. Also reduce Omega 6 intake. Any seed based oils

(sunflaower, corn and safflower) are usually Omega 6 and red meats and cow

dairy....

" I remember someone (Dana?) posting about the

importance of high DHA and low EPA (or was it the other way round?). "

Its the other way around high EPA and low DHA, a bit of GLA and some Vitamin E.

" BTW is GLA omega-6??? "

Yes but it is anti-inflammatory unlike its other Omega 6 family members.

As a rule of thumb,

Omega 3 is anti-inflammatory, anti-thrombotic and anti-arrythmic.

Omega 6 with the exception of GLA (Evening primrose Oil) is the exactly the

opposite.

The trick is to balance the EFAs properly........You need to achieve a ratio of

about 4:1 / Omega 6:Omega 3

Western diets abound in Omega 6 (22:1/ Omega 6:Omega 3) so you have to reduce

your Omega 6 and increase Omega 3.

Omega 6 is in cow dairy ( milk, cheese, butter, cream) , beef, pork, corn,

safflower, sunflower seeds/oils

Omega 3 is in sea products, goat dairy, wild meats (such as game, lamb, boar),

fowl ( not the ones fattened on corn), green leafy vegetables, pumpkin seeds,

flax

Fatty acids are highly oxidisable so DO NOT COOK with them if you can avoid

it..preferable raw. Go Japanese if you can...( Give that fish a good whack on

the head with a hammer before you eat it :-)))

Omega 9 is a great supporter of Omega 3 so use plenty of olive oil.

Throw that margarine OUT. If you have to use anything use butter but very

sparingly.

Most heated fats are going to reduce Omega 3 absorption so bear this in mind

when eating baked goods such as cookies, cakes, potato chips, popcorn etc.

If you see Trans-fats on any packaging, chuck it and chuck it right away.

To be on the safe side avoid any commercially prepared foods which use oils.

These generally use corn oil which is Omega 6 and is a cheap oil at that.

Get into Cretan or Mediterranean or Japanese cooking and you wont go far wrong.

It takes time I know but you will be rewarded with healthier kids and a husband

who wont believe his good luck! ( Now if I could only get my husband to

cook..........)

I second Mandi...

I live in Germany but import Eye-Q from the UK. I wouldnt use any other

product. It turned my daughter around and got me out of a deep depression. Not

to mention improved my skin, eyesight ( the retina is 30% EFAs), strengthened my

nails and improved my terrible memory ( still some ways to go on that but at

least I dont leave vegetables on my car roof anymore or walk out of a shop

without my purse and the item I bought.!)

As for ..she's the best thing since apple pie. She spent hours on

the phone helping me with my daughter. She works tirelessly to help our

children.

Assuming you know from testing that your son is low on Omega 3's, I'd

recommend the Nordic Naturals EPA formula. They definitely do screen for

mercury, and it has high EPA and some DHA. These are both Omega 3's. My

son and my hubby both take this product and we like it a lot. If Kirkman

doesn't sell this one, I think you can buy it online at www.nordicnaturals.com.

Hi everyone,

My name is , mom of 2 yr old . He has been in early

intervention since 13 months. He has come a long way- started out

where he couldnt even sit up- and now all thats left to work on is his

speech. He has about 60-80 words but does not say 2 words together.

My speech therapist recommended the Omega-3. I bought the capsules,

broke it & put it in his juice. Its awful! the taste is terrible- does

anyone have any suggestions or tips on how I can give it to him?

Thanks
