Guest guest
Zarotin made my son so hyperactive that we took him off it after three days so I cannot talk about long term effects or seziure control - just immediate side effects. Guest guest
, My daughter, used Zarontin for several years to control absence seizures. For her - it worked extremely well. We did regular blood tests to check on her liver function - but in our case, it worked until her seizure pattern morphed into something different. Guest guest
Hi , I have some literature about this drug that might help you. It is used primarily for Absence seizures, 60% of those who take the drug are seizure free. Half-life: Adult 53-60 hrs. children 15-68 hrs. Peak time is 3-7 hrs. Liver metabolized with urinary excretion.

Guest guest
We have never tried zarontin but had tried alot of meds only to have success with keppra for our daughter. it doesn't stop them all, but has made a big improvement. she was also much brighter on this then other ACDs and it helped her speech (which is still impaired significantly) although her language is progressing well. hope this helps and Lee <leekm1@...> wrote: Hi all: Have any of your families had experience with the anti-seizure drug Zarontin? My daughter's neurologist is seriously considering putting her on it. She has an abnormal EEG. We tried Depakote and it helped while she was on it but when she came off the abnormal spikes came back. If you have any thoughts to share about it, I'd sure appreciate it. If you could, please reply to my personal address: leekm1@.... Thank you !! Guest guest
i looked up the zarontin and it appears it is tailored for absence seizures. i don't know if that is what you child has. my child doesn't have that type of seizure and i think keppra is used more for partial seizure types and Lee <leekm1@...> wrote: Hi all: Have any of your families had experience with the anti-seizure drug Zarontin? Guest guest
Hi, Im sorry Im responding so late on this. When my son was first diagnosed with epilepsy, the first med that he was on was zarontin, at first he was always tired, and literally couldnt keep his eyes open, and very slow moving for a couple of weeks, im not sure why? Maybe because it was the first med that he was ever on? It lasted probably about 2 mos, he ended up on home instruction from school because he was so slow moving, but once it was titrated it really seemed like a miracle he had so many improvements it alot of areas, but then after maybe another month he started to have the head drops again, so the neuro agreed that this was not the right med, so we changed him to lamictal, and that didnt seem to work as well, as far as improvements were concerned but the seizure activity was less, but to make a long story short now he is on lamictal and zonegran and it seems to work well, I do not see any cognitive side effects, or any slowing, and he is doing great with actual seizure control. But (and there always is a but!) we also still are having constant spikes, but not actual seizures.as well. Im not sure that anything can be done for the constant spike and wave activity. If your child has trouble sleeping, that could be a cause for the spiking and melatonin may help a great deal. My neuro suggested that maybe he wasnt getting the healthy REM sleep that is needed, and to try the melatonin, and he sleeps great now. So things are really looking up for us, hopefully you will get there soon too. Michele
