Hi,

Can some of you tell the rest of us how you network your PCs together? I want

both my PCs to be able to access my cable connection for Internet use. I've no

idea of what hardware/software I'd need to buy. Can someone educate me? :-)

Also, I've heard of wireless networking. Anyone use that?

Thanks,

S.

Good morning . You start out by deciding to do it wired or wireless.

Wired requires a router. Wireless is just that, but there are some things

to consider. I have a small router, but do not share internet access. I

use a dialup, as I am an IC for Medquist, but use my cable modem for

internet access for this channel and med trans research. There are many

choices. May I suggest you go over to your local Best Buy or computer

warehouse and have them explain the advantages and disadvantages of both.

Obviously you can determine the needs you require, but home networking is

easy. May I suggest you read Home Networking for Dummies. That is the

title of the book. We are all dummies until we learn something new and

apply it, then, no longer are we a dummy. So have fun

Karl,

You've brought up something I've often wondered about, so let me change the

subject here for a moment :-). Is it possible to dial into my hospital account

via 56k modem (which they require) and still surf the Internet using my cable

modem? If so, how does one tell the computer to do that?! LOL! As soon as I

dial up via 56k, my internet connection all goes through the 56k line as well

and I don't know how to get to the cable modem for surfing during that time.

Any suggestions for me?

As for Best Buy...the local store here is filled with people who do NOT know

what they are doing :-). It's really not a good place for information, which is

why I posted the question here. I just wanted to know people's personal

preference of wireless versus wired, how complicated they found it to be, etc.

Thanks!

I hope you get some answers to this as I may be in the same boat -- using a

dial-up for work but want to also maintain my cable modem.

Are you a member of AAMT -- if you are you could ask some of the members of your

local chapter for computer guru names.

Also, can you talk with some of your co-workers about who they might recommend

for computer woes, etc.

Hope this helps.

Sylvia,

This is more of what I'm looking for! So, does anyone out there know how I tell

Internet Explorer to always use my cable modem connection and to never use my

56k connection? If that can be done, problem solved!! I've gone into Tools,

Internet Option, Connections....but when I'm dialed up via 56k it does not even

show that I have a cable connection....not sure what to do about that!

I got my cable modem from my local cable company and they hooked it all up and

it works great!

I'll try Circuit City for more information about connecting my 2 PCs through a

router to my cable modem--thanks for the suggestion! :-) If anyone else has any

input, do let me know! Does wireless work as well as with wires??

Opposite with me. I have more success with Best Buy and won't step foot in

a Circuit City. The language out of the employees mouth and the way the

" kids " who are in Circuit City service jobs hang around and not come to a

customer's rescue even when you directly ask them just finally turned me

off. I have been to two in the area and just will not go back, I don't care

what kind of sale they are offering. Yet the two places I would go to and

expect help are Comp USA and Best Buy. I guess it is who they hire and

maybe what they expect their employees to do.

It probably varies so much from each store location, doesn't it? I'm sure it

depends on the local pool of people they are able to draw from. Here in Vermont,

apparently, the pickings are pretty slim! LOL!

Interesting question. I have Dial Dictate, which works with a modem when

someone calls into my computer to dictate, and I am able to use the cable

modem at the same time they are dictating. I have not tried it the other

way.

I can certainly relate to your Best Buy experience! And that's only

if you can find a sales person to talk to in the first place. :(

However, I have had exactly the opposite experience at Circuit City

which is where I purchased my cable modem. It's a Motorola surfboard

and works great! It also has a standby switch that would be important

if you needed to temporarily " disconnect " from the internet for any

reason.

I don't know this for sure but I THINK you would indeed be able to

surf with your cable modem while doing dialup with the 56k. I think

all you would have to do is set up 2 internet connections in Dial-up

Networking...one for each modem and then tell your programs which one

to use. Most programs that use the internet have customizable

connection managers that give you that option. The tough part would

be if you had to use your browser for the 56k as well as the cable.

Have no idea how to tell IE to use both or even if you can. :)

The simplest way for 2 computers is to set ICS (Internet connection

sharing). The host computer will have 2 networking cards, one that connects

to the cable modem, and then one that connects to the networking card in the

other computer. The network cards connecting the 2 computers can be wired

or wireless. I have this set up and there are 5 computers on the network

including the server. The server that is connect to the modem does nothing

but run my firewalls and serve the net to the other computers. It is simple

to set up and less expensive than a router, especially with just 2

computers.

However, some MT companies (I know EDiX does, for sure) require a

hardware firewall/router be in place. :-(

Interesting! Never heard of it.

How much cheaper can be? The router only costs $59, so I'm pretty happy! LOL! I

guess a second network card would cost less than that, huh?

Anyway, thanks!

You obviously have 2 phone lines. One for the cable and one for the 56k,but

do you have 2 PCs. This is something you need. I use a Belkin router

2-port, one for 56k and the switch to the other PC with the cable modem. I

also use this same PC with another router with another PC for constant

medical transcription and real-time studies with 2 monitors. It is a little

sophisticated, but in its simplist form it works. Tell me what you are

trying to accomplish and I will tell you if it can be done without to much

cost.

If you are using a separate program to dial-in to the hospital there is no

reason why you cannot use your cable modem and be connected to the internet

at the same time. Give me some more info and I will try to send some more

info.

Karl,

Okay, there are two different issues here.

Issue #1: I have 2 PCs in different parts of the house. I want both of them

connected to my one cable connection. I think I'm going to go with a router to

accomplish this. Seems pretty straightforward and cheap!

Issue #2: When I am dialed into my local hospital via 56k modem, I want to be

able to surf the Internet (on the same PC) using my cable connection. However,

when I open up my IE browser, it automatically goes through the 56k connection,

making it slow to say the least. So, how can I use my 56k connection for the

hospital dial in AND use my cable connection for IE surfing while I'm still

dialed into the hospital.

Is that clear as mud? LOL!

Thanks for any advice you have to offer--I'm all ears!!

Quixote, not sure what else to tell you. I have Windows 2000. I surf the

internet via cable. Then, I use my dial up program and get into the hospital.

When I then go use IE, it automatically goes to the 56k dial-up connection. I

don't know where to look to tell IE to always associate itself with the cable

modem. There's no such option that I can find even on the " connection " table

under Options of IE. Is there some place else I need to go to tell IE to not

use the 56k connection, but only the cable modem connection?

Thanks!

Hi ,

Do you have an option inside of Control Panel called Internet Options where

you have several tabs across the top one of which is Connections? If you do

then click on it and see if you can add a connection or if you already have

one in the box. If you do then you can edit it to select the option to

either never dial or only dial if a network connection is not present.

Otherwise if you click on the Add button it will run the internet setup

wizard and you will need to select the option for a broadband connection and

you should be able to tell it not to dial using the 56k modem.

I'm sorry if this is kinda vague but I'm on XP and it's been a while since I

ve used Win2K. Let me know if this works for you or not.
