Guest guest
thanks for the reply, could you please confirm what you mean by OT services - is that Occupational Therapy. And for a quick rant, was I the only one surprised that there is no standard sign language, even Switzerland and Germany have different ones never mind UK and America. the comments about the link with the digestive system led me to wondering if too many rennies over the years had given me too high an aluminium amount which in turn had triggered charge in Cai. Guest guest
Ian, Yep OT is occupational therapy. I was also surprised to learn about all the different sign languages around the world when I began learning it. We had a woman move here from Quebec (a French speaking province of Canada) who was deaf. She had learned " QSL " - Quebec Sign Language - but she was easily able to adapt to the ASL we use here. I think you would find the case for most native signers; they will be able to adapt much better than us hearing folk when place in an environment where a 'new to them' sign language was being used. www.chargesyndrome.info > > > thanks for the reply, could you please confirm what you mean by OT > services - is that Occupational Therapy. > > And for a quick rant, was I the only one surprised that there is no > standard sign language, even Switzerland and Germany have different ones > never mind UK and America. > > the comments about the link with the digestive system led me to > wondering if too many rennies over the years had given me too high an > aluminium amount which in turn had triggered charge in Cai. > > Ian - Cai's dad > > > language growth, obtain sensory and OT services, attend to any digestion > > > -- " It is far better to grasp the universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring. Guest guest
Yes, OT is Occupational Therapy - not all OT's are trained in sensory integration techniques, but many are. Sign languages are native languages that have developed naturally within deaf communities. They are not languages that hearing people created for the deaf. Well, there are some of those, but American Sign Language, for example, is a native language, and by and large the deaf community spurns any attempt by the hearing world to impose sign language systems. There are even dialects in sign language. For example, I know that in Michigan, where I live, there are variations of ASL, and this is true around the US. So that is why each country has its own sign language. When I was in Finland for the Nordic CHARGE conference there were three different sign language interpreters going at one time because of the different countries represented. Guest guest
Ian- Don't give your guilty thoughts one moment's notice! There is nothing that you or your wife did to cause Cai's CHARGE. There are so many other things that need your energy and attention. Let go of that one :-) Michele W the comments about the link with the digestive system led me to wondering if too many rennies over the years had given me too high an aluminium amount which in turn had triggered charge in Cai. Guest guest
Ian- Another thought related to sign language -- Does anyone there use Cued Speech? It's a manual representation of a spoken language. Each speech sound has a hand shape and placement. It began here in the US but I understand they have added speech sounds of other languages as well so that a child can learn his native language in Cueing. I haven't visited this website myself, but I understand it has on-line Cueing lessons: <http://web7.mit.edu/CS/Art/> http://web7.mit.edu/CS/Art/ Cued Speech can be learned in a one or 2 day session. A person can become fluent in several months with practice. So it's easy to learn and use. And it represents the native language so it's not a new language. Kids who Cue do better learning to read than kids who sign because they Cue the same language that they are learning to read. Just another option to throw into the mix for you! Their last name is Khouri. CHARGER is Cierra (4 and a half years old). Dad is . Mom is Eloise or Eloisa. I have been a member since my daughter was born, taken great information, comfort, joy, and love reading the messages but I have not ever posted a message. I know you are very active so I was just wondering if you could post a question out for me. Of course, thank you and all more than words can say. The Group understands I know. Guest guest
Hi Michele, I don't give them any time, at first I thought maybe we were being punished, but then I realised we were being rewarded, although I am not always grateful especially like this morning when you spend the first half hour when you wake up with suction pump in one hand, tea in the other and a hope in your heart that he will cough it all up in time for you to make the toilet. :-) Ian Michele Westmaas wrote: > > > Ian- > > Don't give your guilty thoughts one moment's notice! Guest guest
Ian- That's the sense of humor we all need to survive! Thanks for the morning chuckle. Instead of starting my day as you described, I'm starting it with a giggle!
