Guest guest
Sounds very familiar. We saw immediate improvement in coordination (within 3 days), but as far as speech - it was more babbling (and " normal " sounding babbling - as opposed to ahhhhhhhhh grunting we were hearing before). Then we saw less drooling, less tongue protruding and he started to pucker his lips for a kiss (about 2 weeks into thing) - which he was never able to do. It was a few weeks before we heard new words. We went from 3 word approximations to 10 words by a month. (Then we stopped using cod liver oil - I obviously had not spent enough time on this site to know at the time that wasn't the ideal choice) due to intolerable sensory integration issues that developed. Bad regression over the next week. Stopped babbling, was falling down all over the place. Then started Pro-EFA and in a week regained and surpassed all the previous gains. We went to 2x a week dosing and the first 2-word sentense came out. We are now at 1/2 tsp 3 times a day with meals and he is doing well, 4 months into supplements...with over 35 words (that we understand) and attempts at conversations which are impossible to understand. Even the words he knows how to say well alone or in a 2 word phrase get totally garbled as the complexity of this sentense increase. But at least he is trying. He is signing still with his attmepts at conversation so we can usually figure out what he is trying to tell us. We saw another big surge when I went to twice a day (as opposed to just doubling the dose). Plus much better sessions with the SLP. Consider trying this. You can always go back to the lower dose if you don't see a change - but I bet you will. Let me know if you give this a try. - [ ] Preliminary Results of ProEFA for Dylan Hi, I just wanted to post my son Dylan's (28 mo) results so far from the ProEFA supplements. He has been on them for 2 weeks now (1/2 teaspoon of liquid form). Most notably, we are seeing much more babbling from him. We also notice much more immitation from a physical standpoint (hand gestures, jumping, etc). He's doing better in therapy too. We don't yet see many new words consistently being used or used without prompting, but we're hoping that will come later. Does this sound familiar to anyone who had successful results from the ProEFA? I'm hoping these changes are a sign that Dylan will respond well to the EFAs. Guest guest
OK - ph is pedaling a tricycle!!!! Anyone out there with a globally apraxic child knows how pedals are such a difficult concept. Very exciting! This I attribute to our excellent new OT. -C
Guest guest
- thanks for the feedback. I'll definitely try the 2x/day dose once I see a plateau. For now, I noticed that giving it to him in the morning as opposed to nighttime was better. We just had the session with our SLP and Dylan did great! I asked her what she thought and she said " the best session by far! " . So now I know that's it not just in my head that he's responding well to the ProEFAs. He tried to say most everything she asked and did it pretty well. In two weeks I went from highly anxious to very hopeful and excited! Guest guest
This reminds me if I may quote myself?? In The Late Talker you can find my quote " It has gone from hopeless to hopeful in such a short time " on page 114. The original quote was on a post to this group many years ago. I am happy to say that my son talks & talks all the time now. Sometimes I forget when he didn't utter a word!!! Guest guest
We also heard ph attempt to repeat things said to him, after complete silence for nearly 2 years (outside of occasional grunting for when he wanted something, maaaaa, daaaa, and baaa (ball). We just updated his word list for our SLP and he is nearly at 50 words, but will attempt to repeat nearly everything now - sometimes its accurate and understandable, sometimes its not. But he has not incorporated all these new repeated words into conversations (yet). We didn't wait for the plateau since a few weeks passed and he was making definite progress - but I wanted to see if we could maximize benefits - so played around with dosing. This is not the recommendation from the group, so you should know that. But we saw an impressive surge with each increase (despite never getting to a plateau). Glad to hear you are seeing improvements and hope it continues! -C [ ] Re: Preliminary Results of ProEFA for Dylan - thanks for the feedback. I'll definitely try the 2x/day dose once I see a plateau. Guest guest
, WoooHooo to ph!!!!! By the way, how old is ph? Abby is 4.7, and just this week she has made some progress with her tricyle. She needs some help getting going. And then she can peddle for a VERY short distance, maybe half the width of a single car driveway. BUT it's improvement non the less. I'm not sure if it's a coordination issue (global apraxia, since she was never officially dx'd with global apraxia) or if it's more of a hypotonia issue. She also cannot use the foot presses/pedales at Build-A-Bear workshops either. She can put her foot on it, but doesn't apply enough pressure. I had to press my hand on her foot, to physically show her, but unfortunately it didn't really work. However that was about 9mths ago. (We are NOT going back anytime SOON, to try it again though! LOL) Anyway Congrats to ph again! Dawn in NJ > > > > OK - ph is pedaling a tricycle!!!! Anyone out there with a globally > apraxic child knows how pedals are such a difficult concept. Guest guest
ph is nearly 2.5. He's not actually " moving " the tricyle himself - but he's keeping his feet on the pedals while we push him - which is still huge. -C [ ] Re: Preliminary Results of ProEFA for Dylan , WoooHooo to ph!!!!! Guest guest
GO JOSEPH!!! Josh is 7 1/2 (almost 8) and we got him an adaptive trike for Christmas 2004 - he used it a bit over the spring and summer - we had to push some until he did get the movements, then he went " biking " with a friend of his with cp (also on an adapted trike) - he loves it. Josh has global dyspraxia and hypotonia (along with the verbal/oral apraxia and dysarthria). Can't tell you how much I cried the first time he pedaled on his own - it was only a couple of cycles around but it was him doing it! This past summer we didn't get out on the bike much (marital problems and pending divorce - unfortunately took a bit of a toll that way on Josh) but this year I plan on getting him out a lot. His PT is using the same type of bike, along with OT in some join sessions, in school so he'll be ready! Good luck and keep up the good work! Guest guest
My son started taking PROEFA - 2 capsules a day in Nov, 2004 and he was 3 years 10 mths - I open the capsules and give them to him in a spoon. Now he asks for it, but he calls it " monkey oil " don't ask me why? He thinks its funny!!! so we laugh. He went from 2 little words - mom and no - now you can't count his words and sentences. He has trouble with his Ls, but you can understand him 75% of the time. I am a firm believer in PROEFA and prayer!!!! Where we would be without prayers!!! Congratulations to Jade and Dylan...
