Is it ok to eat something high in carbs if you are going to go do a lot

of excersice shortly after eating?

Hi Marisa,

Exercising after eating is the way I can have carbs. We had lunch at Red

Lobster today. I had 2 stuffed mushrooms, blackened catfish, salad, baked

potato and one biscuit. Went shopping afterwards and 2 hour readings were 114.

Yesterday for breakfast I had a bowl of oatmeal with peaches, sweetened with

SF maple syrup, no protein, no fat and two hours later, readings were 81. I

did housework after eating breakfast.

Everyone is different. I suggest that you eat the high carbs then test to

see what happens.

When playing soccer I did best eating proteins and

fibers

and carbs. The protein and fiber help level out the

impact

of the carbs. Soccer involves two 45 minute halves of

running.

One orange at half time never caused me to spike. I

eat one carb

exchange for every half hour walking I do now. 1978

was my final

year as a soccer player. My doctor always had me start

slowly and build

my way up to a full exercise routine. That way I could

test as often as

needed an prevent severe insulin reactions. At 52 I

have lived with hypoglycemic unawareness for more than

five years and test often

to prevent severe shocks.

Hope this helps.

If diabetes is due to obesity, then will the person be

completely cured once he comes to the normal weight?

(Ofcourse not stopping exercise and not including too

much carbs)

Regards,

Arti.

Arti,

becoming a diabetic is sort of like being an alcoholic. We are never cured.

We just learn how to live with it in a healthy manner. Eat healthy,

exercise healthy, try to maintain the best comfortable weight you can, and

if you can manage to control the diabetes through diet you will be fine, but

diabetic the moment you go back to your old ways. that is what my endo and

nutritionist have told me. I sort of believe them. I am so much better

overall now that I've started eating better, loosing weight I had gained

(not weight bashing anyone - I gained nearly 60 lbs that I surely didn't

need and now I'm getting rid of it although I know I'll never be that trim

skinny me again).

And Arti, although for some people obestity contributes to diabetes, not

everyone who is obese or even overweight gets diabetes.

Arti -

Not everyone who is diabetic is obese. Most people I've known who is

diabetic are not even close to being overweight - even my

grandmother, who was the only person in my family I know of who was

diabetic. Being overweight doesn't HELP, but it doesn't cause it

either.

In the nutritional classes I took just recently at the local

hospital's diabetic center, there was only one other person in them

(besides myself) who had any kind of weight problem.

Losing weight will certainly help me, but it won't cure me (dern it!

lol)

Not every obese person develops diabetes. Those that do have something else

going on in their body than simply being overweight. (It's called

diabetes) ;-)

You may be able to control it with diet and exercise, but the condition

still exists. Diet and exercise may keep it controlled forever, but it may

not. Even with diet and exercise, as you grow older may require some

medications.
